On Freddie Roach: Trailer for the HBO Series by Director Peter Berg

Here's the trailer for the HBO series "On Freddie Roach," directed by Peter Berg:

We'll see. I'm still not exactly dying to see this, because I've been so massively overexposed to Freddie Roach in recent years, but if this is done well -- and the trailer is done very well -- then I'm certain the show will be very interesting. Hopefully it's more than "24/7: Freddie Roach," and I'm optimistic that it will be since Peter Berg is a legitimate director who didn't have to take this project if he didn't truly want to do it.

The series premiere airs on Friday, January 20, at 9:30 p.m. EST.

I'm guessing the film crews weren't still with Roach for his professional tests and setbacks late in the year with Manny Pacquiao controversially beating Juan Manuel Marquez, and Amir Khan controversially losing to Lamont Peterson. That's too bad. From a boxing standpoint, I'd be far more interested to see that than I am more celebration of Freddie's successes. Not that I have anything against his success, mind you, but I know that side very well. He and his fighters have been delivering for a long time now. There's more drama and intrigue to the other side at this point, at least for me.

I'm also hoping Berg was able to go deeper into who Roach really is beyond the sport, at least what there is of Roach beyond the sport.

at least what there is of Roach beyond the sport.

You know, I think this is a really apt comment. We all mention Roach’s consistently ill-advised or OTT statements, but if there is someone out there today who’s more dedicated and more in love with his sport, I’d be shocked. He’s not a part-time trainer like some other illustrious names, or some minor celebrity; he takes enormous pride in his gym and all his fighters, and I think it’s something incredibly admirable.

I agree with this. He’s super over exposed as Manny’s and Amir’s trainer. However, from the trailer, it seems like they will be focusing also on his battle with the illness and that is intriguing, at least to me. It may be a replay of past 24/7s, but it looks different.

peter berg gave us friday night lights (the series), so i’ll most definitely be watching this
