Will anyone be bothered if we don't get a Hopkins vs Dawson rematch? (Photo by Stephen Dunn/Getty Images)
Promoter Gary Shaw doesn't believe that Bernard Hopkins will give Chad Dawson a rematch, assuming he will instead chase a fight with Lucian Bute and get himself stripped of the WBC light heavyweight title. From Keith Idec at BoxingScene.com:
"I don’t think Hopkins wanted to fight Chad then, and I don’t believe Hopkins wants to fight him now. I always thought Chad was superior and that was the one guy Hopkins didn’t want to face. ... I think he’s going to try to fight Bute, and he’ll have to give up his belt. ... Then we would go fight Pascal or Tavoris Cloud."
Hopkins (52-5-2, 32 KO) got the TKO-2 loss to Dawson (30-1, 17 KO) erased from the records when the Caliornia State Athletic Commission ruled on the result and declared it a no contest last month, and Hopkins was still in possession of the WBC belt, which was given back to him shortly after the fight in October.

The really simple truth is that Bernard Hopkins not wanting to fight Chad Dawson goes pretty much hand-in-hand with the public's complete lack of desire to see them fight. Their HBO pay-per-view was a bomb even with the expectations that it would do very poorly, and there has been zero demand for a rematch from anyone but Gary Shaw and Team Dawson.
It's understandable that they want to do the fight, because Dawson isn't an in-demand fighter despite his standing near the top of the 175-pound division. Still, I'd much rather see Dawson rematch Pascal (who has turned into a boxing socialite, always at the big events but never fighting) or fight Cloud (who is scheduled to meet Gabriel Campillo on February 18) than watch he and Hopkins engage in another non-fight. The little bit we saw led everyone to believe that the fight's stinker potential was going to be realized.
I mean, look, I know that going by rankings and all that, Hopkins vs Dawson is a fight that should have appeal. But it just doesn't. It's sort of like LSU vs Alabama. They might be the two best teams in the land, but their games are horrendous because they match up too well. In boxing, Hopkins and Dawson match up too poorly, and frankly will never have a good fight, ever.
Honestly, besides the fact that he's a living legend and still a good fighter, I think I'm kind of over the whole Hopkins fighting bit anyway. I've said that before, but look, after the win over Pascal, I gave the devil his due and then some. It was a brilliant performance, one for the ages, where he used every bit of knowledge he'd put together over his 20-plus years in the ring to his advantage. I loved that fight, and loved what Hopkins did to a younger, faster, stronger, naturally bigger man.
But I think that was the apex, too. What are we going to see from Bernard that's really interesting from here on out? He's turning 47 in two days. Do we need to see that night where it all totally falls apart on him?

Scott, let the man do what he loves :)
There’s hundreds of other boxers who really should not be fighting anymore. Hopkins has earned the right to do whatever he pleases and enjoy his last few months/years in the spotlight. He’s not an incompetent boxer or anything, he is a relevant competitor in his division. Boxing is not just about who needs to prove what. Just because one has nothing to prove anymore does not mean he should stop fighting.
Bernard just loves to box and I just love watching boxing matches, I don’t care much about the story behind the two fighters. As long as Bernard deliveres quality boxing in the ring, I’ll watch…

I didn’t say he has nothing to prove or that he should retire. I said I’m not interested in watching him fight anymore. There’s literally no Bernard Hopkins fight that intrigues me at this point, because he’s not enjoyable to watch, unless he does something really stupid like fight a Klitschko.

gotta say i disagree with you here scott bernie is one of my all time favs and so maybe im biased in my opinion i will say from the start but as radu said basically the mans a world champion, granted the oldest ever but the fact he is and its not exactly like he is because he’s ducking big fights, he’s the world champion because he’s earned it and in my opinion he has earned the right to choose when he thinks his time is up, as to who he fights well i agree with you in that there isnt really a fight out there that excites me, plain and simply because this division does not really excite me a great deal

I’d love to see a rematch, as long as it’s not PPV this time..

Gotta say, I'll never tire of Bernard Hopkins.
I can’t find Andre Ward exciting – although when he fights like the first six rounds of the Froch fight, it isn’t exactly displeasing – but Bernard’s age manages to make his fights so much more intriguing. Add in the fact he’s also a genius, in a generation where pure ring intelligence is plainly rare, and I can’t help but admire the the guy as a boxer.
As such, my problem with this fight lies largely with Mr Dawson. I’ve just really got no interest in seeing him in the ring: he’s a dull fighter with a dull personality, neither of which is going to change. Hopkins-Cloud, or Hopkins-Cleverly, or Hopkins-Povetkin (which I imagine could be made and would give Bernard his chance to match RJJ as a heavyweight titlist) are fights I’d like to see. Not a Dawson rematch.

Why Cleverly? I’m just wondering. Do you think Cleverly is actually that good, or is it just because you want to see Cleverly in bigger fights, or what is it?
Scott Christ - January 13, 2012
I don’t think he’s that good at all, but it’d be a big fight for the UK and a nice chance to potentially see Hopkins fight here. Cleverly is talented, but he’s actually regressed as he’s got older: confidence has become arrogance, and he kind of needs to be taken down a peg or two if he’s going to come close to achieving what most of us thought he could a few years ago. I also reckon it’d be a pretty decent fight, all in all, whereas Hopkins-Dawson II is just going to plainly suck all over again.

Theres being taken down a peg or two
And there is being what I would call… a Pavlick…..
