Pacquiao vs Mayweather: Richard Schaefer Warns Arum Not to Test Him on Matters of Finance

Pretty much everyone agrees that there's at best a 1% chance that the mega-fight between Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather Jr will happen in May, but we're fast approaching a mythical deadline sometime today that Mayweather has to "get the ball rolling." Most likely, Mayweather will fight Canelo Alvarez or someone else on May 5, and Manny Pacquiao will fight on June 9, against his choice of Miguel Cotto, Juan Manuel Marquez, Timothy Bradley, or Lamont Peterson.

Golden Boy's Richard Schaefer did take a couple pretty real shots at Top Rank's Bob Arum in a statement to RingTV.com's Lem Satterfield yesterday, though, and that's kind of interesting. At this point I might be more interested in seeing Bob and Richard have a pay-per-view debate. (I'm kidding. Please don't try to charge us money for that.)

Star-divide

Specifically, Schaefer blasted the Top Rank company line that they don't know who to call when it comes to Mayweather, and says Arum would be wise to not get into any financial discussions with Schaefer:

"Bob would be well advised not to get me going on this subject. Bob and Todd don't know who to talk to? What planet are they living on? It's one excuse after the others. They need the investors? The fact is that between Floyd and the Money Team and Golden Boy, we have more money than these investors combined.

"We don't need outside investors. Maybe Top Rank needs outside investors. They're not as well capitalized as we are. We don't need outside investors. What the hell does he need investors for? So you can have investors guaranteeing the fight with their own money?

"I don't understand what this guy's talking about. He might be an okay boxing promoter, but I tell you one thing, when it comes to finance and money, I'll take him before breakfast. That's my domain. We never had any problems with Floyd making record purses and record monies."

It's hard to argue against Schaefer's claim that duBoef or Arum saying they don't know who to call is really weak. They know who to call. You call Richard Schaefer up. Then, let's say just for the sake of argument, that isn't right, then you find out who you should call, be it Al Haymon or Leonard Ellerbe or someone else.

I mean, that's not really all that hard, is it?

Of course it could work the other way, too.

In short, we've got a bunch of wealthy, powerful men all playing peek-a-boo but REFUSING TO LOSE.

Glove up both Richard and Bob, have them open the PPV with a 3 round fight. No one would have any objections I don’t think.

Mayweather likes and trusts Schaefer. Arum has always known to call Schaefer or Haymon.

This is getting pretty funny but the bottom line is that Golden Boy HAS NO contract with Floyd so it is fruitless to speak with them about Floyd at this moment UNLESS Floyd authorizes them to speak for him; which he HAS NOT thus far.

Schaefer is baiting Arum so that he can insinuate himself into a fight that he has not contractual righs to at this moment. Arum’s job (legally) is to avoid conversations with him lest he allow GB to get their hands on a pot that they otherwise have no rights to.

Bottom line. Schaefer speaks for Golden Boy and GB alone. Not Floyd.
Arum speaks for Top Rank and thus for Manny.
Huge difference.

Schaefer is as smart as Guererro who through PR has recently tried to insert himself into a fight with Floyd.

But I love the idea of a TR vs GB tag team matchup.
And who said Gorgeous George was a fool.

If Schaefer doesn’t speak for Floyd then how was he able to declare that Guerrero was out of the picture?

Guerrero is GB

Good point. I now feel stupid.

Floyd will now and go fight Guerrero......

What does Schaefer know ay

You shouldn’t feel stupid. Floyd’s often made it clear how influential Golden Boy are in his career and has been on record many times before saying that Richard Schaefer would be – and is – his negotiator. There might be no contractual obligation, but Schaefer and Golden Boy are inextricably linked with Mayweather. Just how it is.

Thanks. That’s really my thought process, but I had forgotten Guerrero was also promoted by Golden Boy. But you’re exactly right. Schaefer works closely with him.

im gonna write that 1 down!

I’ll take him before breakfast.-Richard Schaefer

Bold and Ballsy

What he should have said is that I will not only match you (your offer/guarantee) but I will raise you.

Notice the silence on the subject at hand: Finance.
It’s put up or shut up.
Pay or don’t play.
Business 101

promoter

is Schaefer floyds official promoter? i dont know why he keeps jumping on arum. maybe Schaefer needs attention. he thinks he’s an important key on making this fight happen. but i never recall GBP has any hold on floyd jrs career whatsoever.

Floyd really is his own boss

For better or worse.

Better for him in most ways albeit he does engage a real promoter (GBP) and not his company (Mayweather Promotions) which even he knows is not capable of properly and fully promoting his events from nail to nail.

Worse for fans because he only fights when and who he wants.

Not only incapable, but it doesn’t even really exist. Mayweather is not a licensed promoter. It’s a logo.
