Bob Arum says that he wants the Mayweather fight but then gives another excuse. Who do you believe? (Photo by Patrick McDermott/Getty Images)
Keeping track of the excuses coming from both sides is starting to get very difficult. In an interview with Rick Reeno, Bob Arum has crafted himself a brand new excuse. Bob talks about the news that Richard Schaefer has called his office several times.
"Now wait a second. It's the same as you, calling me, and saying 'I want to do this fight, I'm promoting Mayweather, let's sit down and talk.' I wouldn't do that because I don't know if you're representing Mayweather or you aren't. You don't have a contract with Mayweather and neither does Schaefer. Schaefer has done some promotions for Mayweather for a fee, but that doesn't mean he's representing him on this type of situation.
Looking at it from Mayweather's perspective, with money this large, I wouldn't want to go naked and fight on a percentage. I would want a substantial guarantee. I know people have called me and said they talked to Mayweather and they were prepared to put up a guarantee, but I don't know if it's true or if it isn't true. It's not my f**king business. It only becomes my business when Mayweather says 'I want to do the fight and these are the people representing me because I made a deal with them.' "

So now the roadblock for this fight is that Floyd doesn't have anyone to represent him. Nevermind, that Golden Boy has promoted all of Floyd's recent fights, all after he fought Oscar De La Hoya. The excuses are piling up and each side is trying to win the PR battle. This move seems to be Arum's attempt at trying to pin the blame on Floyd, because everyone seems to believe Floyd's twitter challenge. Both sides seem to be more interested in winning the PR war than actually making the fight.
Later in the same interview Arum insisted that Floyd Mayweather was the top priority and that they wouldn't even discuss backup plans.
"I am not authorized to talk about who it is, because whoever it is - is Plan B. When they become Plan A, we'll talk about it. Plan A is Mayweather. We are locked and loaded on our side, we're ready."
If they were actually negotiations going on, you would want to talk about your Plan B. You could use this backup plan as leverage in order to get some concessions from the other side. To me, this suggests that Mayweather-Pacquiao is not going to happen and both sides are trying to put the blame on the other side. What is the percentage chance that a Mayweather-Pacquiao fight happens this year? I got 2%.

the fight is not going to happen, and all they know that, they are just trying to win who looks better to the people with the better excuse to blame other side… for me right know mayweather is winning….

Someone should make something like the doomsday clock to keep track of this. Whenever it appears closer to happening the clock moves a minute toward midnight and vice versa. What time would it be now?

Hmm. Did the “ball get rolling”? Is that why they can’t announce Plan B? You know.
Because Floyd is Plan A.
I don’t know who represents him. It’s a fucking mystery.

Floyd’s twitting again. Time to go through another cycle of ESPN talking heads pretending that they care about boxing. Skip Bayless is going to school all of us!
Waldo Rastel - January 17, 2012
It’s the new year. This’ll go away again.
DrRck - January 16, 2012
10% chance. I’ll be optimistic

100% chance this fight happens this year.
…there…I said it.
Brent Brookhouse - January 16, 2012
I second that
It’s gonna happen for sure

If it doesn’t happen in May, I think it doesn’t happen at all this year.

November
pakinpower - January 17, 2012
Foyd hasn’t fought twice in a year in ages, yet suddenly he’s going to be ready to sign a contract and promote one of the biggest fights in history in the two months he’ll be out of prison? The November talk is even more pie-in-the-sky than the current “negotiations.”
bachwards - January 17, 2012
That is just my instinct
There are no ‘negotiations’ between Floyd and Manny now but it seems that all parties realize for different reasons that time is no longer on their side.
I know Arum wants the mone thius the fight…..but neither he nor his team has any intentions of negotiating against themselves. And at the moment they dont have anybody to negotiate with.
pakinpower - January 17, 2012
I thought Floyd repeatedly stated
that Al Hamon was his man of business. (Source)
Nobody to negotiate w/? Please!

This shit is nauseating. It’s really fucking sickening.
lcollins1 - January 16, 2012
I hope
they both lose their next fights. I hope it blows up in Arum’s face like a big adult diaper full of mashed carrots and apple sauce diarrhea. And I hope Pac v. Cotto or Pac v. my sister or Pac v. whoever sells about 50K PPV.
lcollins1 - January 16, 2012
Arum is losing his marbles.
He really seems to have no idea how absurd he sounds anymore. There is not even a pretense of plausibility.
Matt Miller - January 17, 2012
His full interview with Rick Reeno is exactly to the word what I have said here was their position for more than a month. Reeno just asked the questions in a sequence that elicited the precise answers.
Floyd has to call/text/email and/or assign/authorize a representative to negotiate the fight with the guys who represent Pacquiao contractually. Thus far his only correspondence has been with TdB and it is purely friendly text and two….one long, one short phone call. The long one was all sugar; the latter all spice.
pakinpower - January 17, 2012
exactly.
“i really want the fight…i, i, i just don’t know who to talk to on their side! i can’t get a hold of anyone authority!” although maybe it’s more plausible that Top Rank disconnected it’s phone/internet/mobile services, since Arum isn’t much compelled go outside of TR for a fight.
Sentimental - January 17, 2012
This may be a rumor
I am from Denver and I am hearing from all kinds of people that Mike Alvarado just signed a contract to fight Juan Manuel Marquez. If Marquez signed a contract to fight Alvarado he must know he is not getting that fight with Pacquiao for sure.
ElPinchejuan - January 17, 2012
I hope what your saying happens because that could be a very very good fight, or possibly a blowout. Either way Marquez-Alvarado is a nice match up.
36_chambers_ofdeatH - January 17, 2012
at 140..thats a nice matchup
Vicmatic1 - January 17, 2012
Neither side wants the fight,
but Arum’s excuses are getting more threadbare by the minute.
jhf884 - January 17, 2012
excellent use of that adjective
