Floyd Mayweather Jr and Manny Pacquiao had a brief phone conversation with one another on Wednesday night, which was reported by ABS-CBN news in the Philippines, as Pacquiao gave a brief account of what they talked about (translation via Ryan Maquinana at BoxingScene.com):
"It went O.K., the talk about the negotiation proceeds forward. ... I said that the 50/50 was approved and there’s no problem. Anytime. It’s in your hands. We’ll just wait if it’s O.K. with you."
Bob Arum confirmed to The RING that the fighters spoke on Wednesday, and says that Mayweather and Pacquiao adviser Michael Koncz have been speaking "quite often," and that the phone conversation came about when Mayweather called Koncz, who was with Pacquiao at the time.

I can legitimately and honestly say that I think this little bit of news is interesting. I don't know what it means, if anything, but this is actually interesting.

I love this article
They talked on the phone, I guess that’s good or something. Arum is starting to look absolutely terrible in these discussions and if GBP was worth their salt they could take advantage of it.

.
I got a source at Top Rank that told me that Floyd passed Manny a note during homeroom.
journeyintosound - January 19, 2012
How
Floyd has told TR privately to ignore his tweets, especially the one about GB. He saids that was done to get Hayman and GB ‘off his back’.
If you know more , please do tell.
pakinpower - January 19, 2012
Mayweather and Koncz have been speaking privately for weeks? That’s news to me.
Kory Kitchen - January 19, 2012
According to Arum..
…Koncz went to talk to him at the gym about the magical investors that were lining up to make this fight.
erod - January 19, 2012
I’m generally of the opinion that virtually all news with regard to the negotiations is useless blather, but this seems legitimately interesting. Maybe, just maybe, this thing could happen after all.

I could see it sounding a lot like this convo.
RyanSexton - January 19, 2012
No info on the date?
Seems like the date is the sticking point.
Polish Rifle - January 19, 2012
May or Never
If this fight does not take place in May, we will not get it at all (this year). In my opinion, A fight will be set between Manny and another opponent (Peterson or Bradley) when Floyd goes to jail. Then Manny will be set to fight Peterson or Bradley around late October and we go through another round of drama.

I wonder what kind of phone Manny has.
Sentimental - January 19, 2012 via Android app
HP Veer, but I assume he’s probably using iPhone4S or a Blackberry 9900. All depends though. Maybe he uses them all.
RyanSexton - January 19, 2012
Check his Twitter
And see what app he’s using. Might be a giveaway. I don’t follow him so I wouldn’t know. My guess, iPhone.
xFenixKnightx - January 19, 2012
My mind's version of the conversation.
Floyd: “Hey, is this the little guy?”
Manny: “This is Manny.”
Floyd: “Yeah, the little guy….anyway, I don’t speak Chinese. You know American, punk?”
Manny: “I’m from the Phillipines, not…”
Floyd (interrupting): “It don’t matter, if it don’t make dollars it don’t make sense to talk about.”
Manny: “Did you call to negotiate? Because Bob Arum…”
Floyd: “Bob Arum don’t know shit about boxing. He been lyin’ all the time. You know how to tell when Bob Arum lyin’? His lips movin’…Anyway, how long you been fightin’? I never heard of you before you fought DeLaHoya.”
Manny: “I turned pro when I was 16 and I’m 33 now, so….”
Floyd: “So you know know shit about boxing either then. Hey, listen, Bob Arum aint makin’ shit off any of my fights. It’s all Mayweather money. So you wanna fight on my terms or not, punk?”
Manny: “I want the fight but there are a lot of things to work out.”
Floyd: “See, I knew you’d be ducking punk.”
Click. Floyd hangs up the phone and contemplates a media strategy.

How cute. Maybe they'll get to first base on their next date
cyke - January 19, 2012
Gives me hope that it will happen. Not in May though, maybe later this year.
J Theory - January 19, 2012
They can talk every damn day and become best friends, but until Bob says yes, and Alchard Shaymon negotiate with him…this means nothing.
erod - January 19, 2012
Alchard Shaymon
Nice ring to it.
AndrewDM - January 19, 2012
I hope he didn’t use his money phone. Because I don’t think that’s hooked up to anything.

I agree; this actually does seem mildly interesting.
I found myself wondering if the missing element in this situation has been a lack of direct contact between them, and a lot of histrionic orchestration with promoters.
Then, I remembered that it’s Pacquiao and Mayweather. But, at least the story is apparently coming from one of the fighters.
It still seems to me that we could have a completely intact, and equally viable boxing world (such as it is at the moment), if Pacquiao retired and Mayweather were simply ignored, so that neither one ever fought again, including with each other.
DrRck - January 19, 2012
"We’ll just wait if it’s O.K. with you."
Suggests Manny was asking to wait untill November. That’s just my take on it.
TheBod - January 19, 2012 via mobile
If Floyd told the court he had a date set to specifically fight Manny
Then the pressure for him to make a deal fast is on him.
His calling TdB and now Manny suggests an urgency that has not previously existed.
pakinpower - January 19, 2012
Or maybe he thinks he can beat him. Or maybe he isn’t sure how he will respond to 90 days in jail. Or maybe a lot of other things as well.
tkeithwhite - January 19, 2012
Why ever would Floyd say that?
I doubt the court cares who he is fighting, though they might care when…
jhf884 - January 19, 2012
And all of us would have doubted that the court would have allowed him to delay his incarceration. But they did.
We shall see how this plays out but it does appear that he is going a much longer way to making this particular fight NOW, on May the 5th, than at any other time.
pakinpower - January 19, 2012
No even semi competent attorney
Would allow him to say what your proposing he said. Maybe it happened, but it isn’t really likely at all.
jhf884 - January 19, 2012
This isn’t my opinion. It was TR’s and I said as much over a week ago. Arum told Rick Reeno the same exact thing two days ago.
Vegas is Vegas. What happened in the first week of January behind the closed doors of the judge is anyone’s guess.
All we really know for certain is that Floyd’s lawyers made some kind of wackadoodle deal with the judge thay swayed the court to extend his freedom until June 1st.
pakinpower - January 19, 2012
Well, if Arum said it...
jhf884 - January 20, 2012
BTW. This is LAS VEGAS we are talking about...
pakinpower - January 19, 2012
Here is the quote from his attorney
"There are commitments to the arena, there are commitments to cable networks and the opponent was known and a back-up was known."
So who exactly did they name and who is the back-up.
pakinpower - January 20, 2012
They could easily name names
w/o stating or implying that they had a deal in place, which is what I took you to be saying above.
Saying “we are trying to get a deal w/ X” or “we are close to a deal w/ X” would be one thing. A very different thing would be to state to a judge that they have a deal w/ someone who the plainly do NOT have a deal with.
jhf884 - January 20, 2012
Whether they fight in May or November
Holding it in this proposed 40,000+ seat outside venue, is risky. What are the contingencies if there is inclement weather?
Las Vegas Asian - January 19, 2012
Everything has risks
Here is another risk.
Floyd gets involved in some kind of scrap, a minor incident of any sort, between now and his date ….and the judge says FU, you are going straight to jail to do your time.
pakinpower - January 19, 2012
Or Manny fights another matchmaker approved opponent.
Clove_art - January 20, 2012
Name a modern great who was not matched well…..or did not match himself well.
pakinpower - January 21, 2012
Tyson, lennox Lewis, Ali, hagler,I dunno maybe any legendary fighter who actually had a challenging fight?
Clove_art - January 21, 2012
And it looks like I was right, with this Cotto fight. Now Manny can’t fight any of the new welterweights you guys acquired?
