As the excuses mount, it looks like the megafight between Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao is becoming less and less likely. Since Floyd already has the May 5th date locked down at the MGM grand, it may be time to start looking at the other possible opponents.
The two biggest names that have cropped up are Robert "The Ghost" Guerrero and Saul "Cañelo" Alvarez. Both of these fighters have ties to Mexico, making them attractive opponents for a fight taking place on Cinco de Mayo. When forced to make a decision between these two fighters, many members of this blog have had an adverse reaction to a potential fight between Floyd and Guerrero, #NoToGuerrero. However, former US Olympic Boxing coach Kenny Adams has a different opinion that he shared with Peter Sciretta of Boxing Scene.
"If I had my preference I'd rather see Floyd fight Guerrero, because it would be a more competitive fight with Guerrero. It's a better matchup because Guerrero's got more experience. Plus you got the strength of a full grown man with Guerrero as opposed to Canelo who's just a kid, and that makes a big difference. And that's coming from one of the top trainers in boxing."
With all due respect to Kenny Adams, he is completely wrong in this case. Guerrero may have more experience but he fights two weight classes below Floyd Mayweather. He does not have more strength than Canelo who fights at 154.
I'm not even sure if they allow you to make this kind of mismatch in Fight Night. Floyd will have such a big weight advantage that he can just bully Guerrero in the fight in addition to using his defensive gifts. There is no way I could ever see Guerrero winning this fight outside of Floyd suffering a freak injury. Canelo at least has a tiny chance of winning the fight by KO and he usually puts on a good show.

How old does he think Canelo is? 12? And what weight class does he think Canelo is currently in? Lightweight?
This seems really dumb, but who am I to question “one of the top trainers in boxing.”

I dont think that GBP will match Canelo this young. Nor do I think they should.
Sure, it’s fine if he loses and learns but I would not take the chance of a humiliating loss undermining the kid’s confidence going forward. Not this early in his career.
Since about 95% of what we are hearing and reading from these guys is PR BS, I’m surprised that Floyd doesnt call out Chavez for a Cinco de Mayo fight.
Just for the hell of it.

Are you sure about that with the newer ones? I remember they stopped you from being able to go across multiple weight classes with your matchups.

Canelo vs Mayweather will be a fun fight. Mayweather will obviously outbox Canelo, but there is always a puncher’s chance that Canelo can K.O Mayweather. I don’t think it really hurts his career too much either, I mean, he’s a poorly-tested champion and though he is popular, a fight with Mayweather will launch him into the international platform, win or lose.
Obviously Golden Boy would prefer to see him take on a few mid-range top 10 guys before fighting someone as good as Floyd. I think Canelo vs Cotto match up nice, but let’s be real, he’s probably a few years away from winning against anyone good. So he can either fluff his career and take an earful of criticism, or go out and give it his all and pray that he wins. I think he’s young and stupid enough to want to push Golden Boy to get him these bigger fights, despite everyone knowing he needs a lot more momentum to take on better fighters.

Canelo’s the best option if those are the only two names in the hat. If GBP doesn’t sacrifice that lamb, get Sergio Martinez (if he can cancel his fight in March) or Cotto.

That’s what I think would happen in a Mayweather-Alvarez fight.
Neither Guerrero nor Alvarez would win, but whereas Guerrero, on the one hand, is likely to prove to be too small, Alvarez would be suckered and bamboozled. I think that Guerrero would give a much better fight, so I think Adams, for all the hyperbolic self-estimation, is right.
