After reportedly having come to terms to rematch Manny Pacquiao on June 9, and then denying those reports last night, Miguel Cotto is now supposedly going to make a decision on his next fight this week, and the choices are Pacquiao or Floyd Mayweather Jr.
Here's what Cotto's legal adviser Gabriel Peñagaricano said:
"I know [Mayweather adviser Leonard Ellerbe] and I have an excellent relationship with him. But it is still premature to say anything. We have to wait and see what happens. Honestly, the doors are open. Miguel, in terms of the date [May 5] has no problem. [And there is] no problem with June either [for Pacquiao]. Those choices are there. And this week should clarify things."
In the reactions to the Pacquiao vs Cotto rematch yesterday, a fair number of people said they'd prefer to see Miguel face Mayweather. I don't know if that's because there's an idea that he'd be more competitive against Mayweather, or just because they haven't seen that particular sportsbook mismatch before.

Cotto, as we've said before, is in an enviable position for a fighter. A free agent, he's enough of a draw on his own to not need to chase any fights. He wants big money, though -- and with his ability to draw, Miguel Cotto is now in a spot where he can call more shots than anyone but Floyd or Manny, and since he isn't tied to a promoter, Cotto may be calling more shots than Pacquiao actually does anymore.
I think what it will come down to, assuming this isn't all a bluff and that Pacquiao vs Cotto II isn't basically the done deal it was said to be yesterday morning, is payment. In recent fights, it's no secret that Manny Pacquiao's opponents get more money than Floyd Mayweather's opponents do. Shane Mosley and Juan Manuel Marquez both had $5 million guarantees against Pacquiao last year. Victor Ortiz, on the other hand, made a fairly pitiful $2 million to face Mayweather in a major event fight.
The $2 million that Mayweather's last opponent was paid was less than Cotto received for his December rematch with Antonio Margarito, and it's actually less than Margarito made in that fight, too. Cotto vs Margarito II was a big fight, the fourth-biggest of 2011 in America, and by far the third-biggest. But it wasn't one of the "MEGA EVENT SUPER SHOWS" or anything.
From the Mayweather and Golden Boy side -- again, assuming this isn't all just a bluff to keep a Pacquiao rematch announcement as "surprising" as possible -- this could also come down to desperation. Floyd has to fight someone on May 5, or that judge that gave him five months to delay his jail time is going to be pretty pissed off. Canelo Alvarez has come up, but Golden Boy really might prefer to not rush him into this fight. At 21, he'll still be there later this year or next year to fight Mayweather. Robert Guerrero is ruled out.
They just don't have anybody else, really. If Mayweather and Golden Boy can give Cotto a better deal than Top Rank and Pacquiao will, then of course I would expect Miguel Cotto to fight Mayweather, and even if it made Bob Arum mad, so what? It's business.

Weren’t there rumblings of a Cotto-Mayweather fight years ago?
Now no one wants it. If Mayweather and Pac don’t get it on now, people won’t care. Just like they don’t care about anything to do with Cotto now.
cyke - January 22, 2012
Best time probably would have been 2008, but Mayweather retired and Cotto fought Margarito.
Kory Kitchen - January 22, 2012
Of course they don’t care! That’s why the fights keep selling, and why Cotto-Margarito sold really well, and why Cotto-Margarito generated a ton of press buzz. No one cares!
Scott Christ - January 22, 2012
Didn’t say anything about Margarito fight. No one wants to see a Cotto that Pac has already taken care of fight Mayweather or anyone else.
cyke - January 22, 2012
if you weren’t referencing the Margarito fight, exactly what did you mean when you said:
Quit saying “no one wants to see.” Cotto-Margarito sold north of 600K on PPV, which is gargantuan for anything in boxing that doesn’t have Manny or Floyd, and Manny and Floyd keep selling 1-1.5 million despite the belief that nobody cares what they do anymore. If the needle moves down in either of their next two fights, it’ll be the first time, really.
Scott Christ - January 22, 2012
The operative being “now.” I don’t exactly see people cheering in the streets for him to fight Pac and I still think its a bad fight. Again, don’t see how you came to the conclusion I was talking about the Margo fight.
cyke - January 22, 2012
Yeah, how could I? You said “no one cares about anything to do with Cotto now,” so I figured maybe you might have been referencing something from a month ago, which is the last thing Cotto did. I don’t know. it’s a mystery. Nobody cares.
Scott Christ - January 22, 2012
Wasn’t it the fourth biggest behind the one Mayweather and two Pacquiao fights?
bachwards - January 22, 2012
Yeah I wasn’t thinking about Mosley, as I try not to.
Scott Christ - January 22, 2012
How much did Mosley get paid vs Floyd? Ortiz is by far the least accomplished of the guys in the pay comparison.
Tysox88 - January 22, 2012
7, reportedly, as I recall.
Scott Christ - January 22, 2012
Mosley was guaranteed $7mm vs Floyd

Tysox88 - January 22, 2012
I’d prefer Mayweather fight Martinez, in an ideal world of course. But Sergio is tied down and well, Cotto is the best big name left to make a reasonably interesting fight with another huge star not name Pacquiao. So if this fight with Mayweather and Cotto happens then oh well. Yankee Stadium would be a good venue to accommodate Cotto’s selling power in New York.
CollegeDropIn - January 22, 2012
Mayweather can’t leave Vegas to fight on May 5 since he’s out to help bring money to Vegas. also Mayweather will never, ever fight in NY again. Not with NY taxes.
Scott Christ - January 22, 2012
Pacquiao-Cotto II will do very big business in my mind. Despite the earlier loss to Pacquiao, Cotto is more popular now than ever in his career. Mainstream sports fans know who he is, and that’s the key. With apologies to guys like Lamont Peterson and Tim Bradley, it’s the more popular name that will get priority because it means more business.
Promoters don’t read Bad Left Hook, and they don’t care all that much about the wishes of boxing fans that watch shows like Boxing After Dark and ShoBox.
They care about sports fans that watch Sportscenter and the like. It’s their buys that make the difference. Not a few thousand pissed off boxing nuts like us that they will mostly have in their pocket regardless.
Kory Kitchen - January 22, 2012
How do you know?
Well, Boxing After Dark is just a name for “Jim Lampley doesn’t work tonight.” There is at this point no real difference between BAD and WCB on HBO.
But, yes, your overall point is true. Bob Arum doesn’t care what I want. I’m all talk. I buy them shits. I bought Pacquiao-Mosley. I bought MORA-Mosley.
Scott Christ - January 22, 2012
If Bob Arum reads Bad Left Hook I will gladly stand corrected.
Kory Kitchen - January 22, 2012
He’s not the only promoter. But no as far as I know, Bob Arum does not read the site, nor has he ever. I was half taking the piss, but some do read the site on occasion, when it concerns them.
Scott Christ - January 22, 2012
Do they ever... contact you ?
Sweet science - January 22, 2012
On occasion, when it concerns them. I’m mostly being funny here, not trying to be mysterious — if there’s something they want to clarify or whatever, they’ll let me know.
Scott Christ - January 22, 2012
Fair play
I have visions of Oscar picking up the phone when you talk about his tweeting or something else stupid he’s done, trying to explain himself :)
Sweet science - January 23, 2012
Oscar doesn’t have the time of day for reason, logic, common sense, humility, self-awareness, or me.
Scott Christ - January 23, 2012
lol
Sweet science - January 23, 2012
To be fair, I did forget about Mayweather Promotions.
Kory Kitchen - January 22, 2012
Please Floyd, pay the man
Floyd had better not fudge this up, he needs to pay Cotto the money he wants. I dont think Cotto will prefer to fight Pacquiao, been there done that. He probably thinks he’s got a better chance at beating Mayweather. (which is very small, but still higher than Pac) I dont think Canelo’s handlers want him fighting Floyd and Martinez has no business at a catchweight.
Come on Floyd, atleast save face and block Pac-Cotto II and help boxing out for once.
dasilversurfer - January 22, 2012
Honestly, I think Cotto would rather fight Pac because he has looked vulnerable lately, and Mayweather is an awfully tough style for anybody.
Kory Kitchen - January 22, 2012
the best Cotto can do against Pac is make him look awful in a win like Mosley. He’s not gonna beat Pac doing what he did against zombies Mayorga, Margarito and B fighter Yuri Foreman.
dasilversurfer - January 22, 2012
I think Mayweather dominates Cotto, but I think that Mayweather (unless he slides quickly) dominates every fighter from 140-147 pounds. I only he think he could be beaten if a guy was just plain far too big for him (maybe Martinez, obviously a guy like Andre Ward.)
I prefer Mayweather v Cotto mainly because it hasn’t been done yet, and if anybody other than Pacquiao is going to fight Mayweather on May 5th it may as well be Cotto.
Still Mayweather v Canelo and Cotto v Pacquiao II look amazing next to Wlad v Mormeck and (potential) Khan v Mosley.
Eoin_not_ian - January 22, 2012
I'd still rather watch Cotto-Canelo Alvarez
but I understand the money has to come first for Cotto. Though if he beat Alvarez, he might be in line for even more dough, but whatever.
geraldmcgrew - January 22, 2012
Martinez vs Mayweather will never happen. Could you imagine Floyd trying to tell people that there are people more dangerous to him than Pacquiao?
“No, I’m not ducking Pacquiao, I’m taking on Sergio Martinez who is about 5 times more scary…” Sports channels begin to talk about Michael Jordan’s gambling addiction instead of boxing.
RyanSexton - January 22, 2012
Cotto will make a business decision
As he should.
pakinpower - January 23, 2012
can’t blame the guy from trying bump up his pay, and quite substantially also. I know that i will buy it, after complaining how id rather see cotto v alvarez or whatever. Money talks.
Bald-Eagle - January 23, 2012 via mobile
It's Floyd who needs to name a dance partner soon
I would be very surprised if he paid for one as expensive as Cotto.
Miguel meanwhile has some fantastic options. Thanks to his wise decision to re-match Margarito and his performance, he is now in a tremendous position to make some serious late career money.
pakinpower - January 23, 2012
so whos gonna come cheap? berto if he wins
Vicmatic1 - January 23, 2012
isn’t there some kind of secret pact that haymon fighters can’t fight each other?
Apprentice - January 23, 2012
haymon fighters never fight each other and bob arum fighters only fight each other..perfect world!
Vicmatic1 - January 23, 2012
haha, good one!
Apprentice - January 23, 2012
cheap(er). not necessarily cheap
