I wish they'd stop saying "Madison Square Garden." I don't know why this bugs me so much. Maybe the idea that Madison Square Garden is hallowed ground, and we're now pretending that Sergio Martinez is headlining MSG when he's only headlining The Theater, which just isn't the same thing.

I don't know. It could just be me, but it's really grinding my gears.
I didn't like it when Golden Boy pretended Khan vs Malignaggi was at Madison Square Garden, either. Even though MSG has faded from relevance as a top fight venue, and even though the crowd in December for the Cotto vs Margarito undercard was woefully disappointing (they didn't care at all, and it was no more a "boxing crowd" than a Vegas crowd is).
I guess I just feel like headlining the real Madison Square Garden is still a big deal, or should be, and that pretending Sergio Martinez vs Matthew Macklin is headlining MSG is kind of, I don't know, offensive? That's probably too strong. Stupid, perhaps. Because it's a lie.

It’s also like the third or fourth building to call itself Madison Square Garden, and they destroyed the original, beautiful Penn Station to build it and the new, hideous Penn Station. Only in New York is history transferable, because we so badly want to destroy our own buildings. /Lives In Brooklyn
The fight’s a decent fight, though, I must say, although I expect Martinez to handle Mack pretty well; Sturm almost slept-walked through the first four rounds of his fight, and I really think Mack might have fought the fight of his life there in Germany.

Agree with this. I don’t think Macklin is really capable of fighting any better or harder than that, and although i thought he won it was still a close fight. And Martinez is just a whole different species of fighter to Sturm

Doesn’t really bug me when most people say it….just Lou DiBella: “an Irish guy, fighting on St. Patrick’s day for the middleweight championship at Madison Square—-” Oh shut up.

Dibella was struggling to make Macklin sound like a worthy contender.
Lol @ Lee trying to remain diplomatic but really thinking like “Man, this some old bulls**t”
I will be watching only because I never miss a Sergio fight. It’s a rule in my house.

Doesn’t bother me either – the logo plainly says the Theatre on it, so it’s not like they’re trying to fool people. Also, the crowd at the Donaire/Narvaez fight at the Theatre was pretty intense up until the stinker of a main event, and even then at least they were rowdy in calling the fight out for being garbage.

And yet they just say “Madison Square Garden.” It’s not like they’re NOT trying to fool people.
