Tonight's Friday Night Fights on ESPN2 and ESPN3.com begins at 9 p.m. EST, and features a familiar pair of Banner Promotions names in a pair of fights that promise action. Bad Left Hook will have round-by-round coverage of the show.
In the junior welterweight main event, set for 10 rounds, Ruslan Provodnikov (20-1, 13 KO) will face David Torres (21-2-2, 13 KO). Provodnikov, 28, is a young Russian who looks and fights (somewhat) like Kostya Tszyu and has become a Friday Night Fights fan favorite over the last few years. He's coming into this fight having won a debated decision over DeMarcus "Chop Chop" Corley on December 5 in Russia, in a fight where he suffered a cut that was initially thought to be bad enough to keep him out of this fight.

Originally, Provodnikov was to face Mexican veteran Julio Diaz, but instead is up against 33-year-old Torres of Othello, Wash., just about two hours away from tonight's venue in Airway Heights at the Northern Quest Casino. Torres has been stopped in his two steps up in competition, against Julio Diaz and Raymundo Beltran, and is 1-2-2 in his last five, including a draw against another Washington fighter, veteran Santos Pakau, who hasn't won since 2005.
In the co-feature, Korean slugger Ji Hoon Kim (22-7, 18 KO) brings his big right hand and total lack of defense back to the airwaves for a fight with Ghanaian battler Yakubu Amidu (20-2-1, 18 KO). Kim may be more well-known, but Amidu's only losses have come to Ricky Burns and Ali Funeka. It's hard to tell what we'll see here -- Kim has the right hand to knock out anyone in the division, but like Randall Bailey, that's really all he has. Amidu is more an unknown quantity -- his KO rate suggests big power, but he has no really notable wins.
Kim vs Amidu is also set for 10 rounds in the lightweight division.

Holy crap! I actually have a feed to a fight. And I’m not sleeping, at least not yet.
I’m strangely drawn to Kim-Amidu, although I think Provodnikov-Torres will be very good.
DrRck - January 27, 2012
I’m suspecting both fights end within six. Provodnikov might grind Torres down, but I doubt he has much trouble unless that cut was real bad and gets reopened. Should be good action though.
Scott Christ - January 27, 2012
Porvodnikov reminds me of Marciano, in a few ways. He seems short, with no reach, and does nothing but fight.
DrRck - January 27, 2012
agree………… I hope they have more than a few swing bouts lined up

Really looking forward to tonight’s card. Good boxing day – lots of big news, now some fights that should be great fun.
Scott Christ - January 27, 2012
What exactly is Snooki doing in boxing? I know that she has great mitts.
DrRck - January 27, 2012
Promoting. It’s something her dad wanted to do, as much as I can gather. I think she’s using her money to help him do it.
Scott Christ - January 27, 2012
My thoughts on Andre Dirrell… I am reminded of what Roy Jones said after Ike Ibeabuchi nearly beheaded Chris Byrd, only for Byrd to claim it wasn’t a legit knockdown: “He got knocked stupid.”
Verklemptomaniac - January 27, 2012
Vince Vaughn is a boxing manager?
DrRck - January 27, 2012
Yep. He’s a big fan. They brought him to the commentary table once — then the action got hot and he shut up and let the fight happen. I thought that was great.
Scott Christ - January 27, 2012
Live and learn. I wish I had seen/heard that.
DrRck - January 27, 2012
Vince Vaughn again. At least Ralphie isn’t with him again. That man made a scene of himself last time.
Scott Christ - January 27, 2012
well, don’t blink with Kim. One way or the other.
Scott Christ - January 27, 2012
I only blink one way, my man.
lol.
Im_a_fun_haver - January 27, 2012
Kim does not in fact need time to break you down. He can end a night in one punch in the first round (as Gogaladze found out).
schraubd - January 27, 2012
This will be good, I think.
DrRck - January 27, 2012
I will give Kim credit. Each time I see him, his technique has improved. Starting from an incredibly low base, to be sure, but still, it’s good to see.
schraubd - January 27, 2012
someone is going to get knocked the fuck out in this fight. that was awesome
battle axe of doom - January 27, 2012
Kim vs Amidu Round 1
Left hook to the body from Kim, and he’s swinging to start the fight, as expected. Kim firing his right, but Amidu has his hands up and blocking those incoming shots. Left to the body again from Kim. Amidu unleashing his jab now. Slapping left hook from Amidu. Right to the body from Kim. He’s laying in some good body shots here. Crowd is tiny and almost dead silent between exchanges. Amidu gets him coming in, and now they trade! Amidu scoring, Kim coming back. Kim just throwing that right hand with all he’s got, but not landing it. Jesus, Kim WINDS UP on an uppercut from down low. Doesn’t land. Right from Amidu. Kim to the body. Right hand from Amidu. Jesus, this is heating up. Good round.
Kim 10-9, but got very close down the stretch
Scott Christ - January 27, 2012
10-9 Kim
Kim is definitely throwing straighter punches than the last time I saw him. And he blocks the occasional punch! That’s so adorable.
Verklemptomaniac - January 27, 2012
10-9 Kim. Good, competitive round. Kim still spams the overhand right, but that left hook to the body he’s added to his arsenal is a good wrinkle.
schraubd - January 27, 2012
Even. Maybe Kim by a hair. They’re both sitting ducks for each other.

battle axe of doom - January 27, 2012

Scott Christ - January 27, 2012
Amidu is really hitting Kim. When did Kim get here?
DrRck - January 27, 2012

DPlainview - January 27, 2012

Matt Miller - January 27, 2012

Nice slugfest so far.
Verklemptomaniac - January 27, 2012
Kim vs Amidu Round 2
Both throwing to start the round again, and Amidu landing to the body now. Good 1-2 from Amidu. He’s picking up some confidence and some steam. Jesus, they’re throwing. Just standing and throwing. I mean they’re moving around the ring, but then they stop and punch each other. Amidu landing better, more accurately.
Kim winging the right again. Not landing that shot clean. Amidu appears to have scouted him nicely. Amidu really having a good round, laying it on Kim.
Amidu 10-9
19-19
Scott Christ - January 27, 2012
Amidu 10-9, 19-19. Kim’s power so far isn’t bothering Amidu, which is a bad sign for Kim.
schraubd - January 27, 2012
i thought one of those rights slightly hurt amidu near the end there
battle axe of doom - January 27, 2012
looks like this fight is gonna buck the trend of a shitty FNF
battle axe of doom - January 27, 2012
I like this. No defense, good offense, no worry about being hurt.
That was Amidu’s round.
DrRck - January 27, 2012
Amidu is moving his head well, which might be decisive. Also, I’m not thrilled with how this ref is calling low-blows
schraubd - January 27, 2012
This isn't what you'd call a defensive showcase.
Matt Miller - January 27, 2012

DPlainview - January 27, 2012

I am delayed a few minutes and behind you guys
Matt Miller - January 27, 2012
Kim vs Amidu Round 3
Good right by Amidu in the middle of a big flurry. BIG right hand from Kim! He’s getting on Amidu now. He’s really just going nuts. Amidu doing a good job still making him miss. Amidu coming back, and NOW KIM HURTS AMIDU! Amidu trying to hang on. Amidu recovering and letting his hands go. Good head movement from Amidu — at times, as Atlas says. Amidu flurrying. Kim clearly has the heavier hands. Amidu rallying nicely int he final minute of the round.
Kim 10-9
Kim 29-28
Scott Christ - January 27, 2012
i’m actually yelling at my tv for the first time this year. damn good fight so far
battle axe of doom - January 27, 2012
10-9 Kim, 29-28 same
Kim had Amidu hurt at least twice there.
Verklemptomaniac - January 27, 2012
10-9, 29-28 Kim. Had Amidu reeling for a bit, and Amidu really couldn’t care less about the “break” instruction.
Meanwhile, ref appears to warn a low blow while Kim was headhunting, then miss Kim clocking Amidu to the nuts at the end of the round.
schraubd - January 27, 2012
I had the last round for Amidu. Barely.
DrRck - January 27, 2012

Kim vs Amidu Round 4
Amidu with a good right hand. Kim getting sloppier and taking more and more risks. Amidu staying pretty steady. Kim measuring him for right hands. Amidu not taking much bait here, just staying cool under pressure. Like how he’s fighting. Kim misses a few, then lands a goofy left hand that doesn’t really hurt Amidu but looked like it did because they were so awkwardly placed against one another. RIGHT HAND KIM DOES HURT AMIDU! 30 seconds left in the round, and Amidu hangs on. Right hand again! Amidu getting sloppy too now, leading me to believe he’s a little dazed. Amidu now throwing back to end the round. Damn good fight. Amidu keeps making that potentially fatal mistake pulling back.
Amidu 10-9
38-38
Scott Christ - January 27, 2012
that should be 39-37 Kim
I was just wrong.
Scott Christ - January 27, 2012
10-9, 39-37 Kim. Good round.
schraubd - January 27, 2012
Wow. Amidu takes over two minutes, and then Kim rescues the rest.
DrRck - January 27, 2012
10-9 Kim, 39-37
This is why I was so disappointed that Kim got outclassed by Vazquez and blitzed by Lenny Z. I want him to be good, because he can’t be in a bad fight.

Any of you remember a four rounder back in 2010 I think that had one of the worst boxers ever? All he did was throw lunging punches all four rounds against a tall kid who caught a few that honestly shouldn’t have caught… maybe it was 2011… I think it was like a swing fight on a ppv card. I can’t remember the guy’s name… I’m trying to

Kim vs Amidu Round 6
Atlas explains the Povetkin bit.
What I really like about Kim tonight is his consistent pressure. Clash of heads has Kim complaining. Right hand Kim. I think the pace is getting to him just a little bit, he’s moving a lot more. Amidu looking to close the round strong. This referee has done a really good job. Big shot by Kim and they throw until the bell!
Amidu 10-9
57-57
Kim 58-56
Scott Christ - January 27, 2012
Minus the last part. I was nicking Kim at first and reconsidered. I’m having technical difficulties.

Kim vs Amidu Round 7
Atlas going on with the Povetkin stuff. That’s what you get for asking him about his feelings.
Firing, firing, firing again this round. It has slowed down some and become a war of attrition. Kim just doing more damage, I think. Good body shots and head shots from Kim. Amidu cut over the left eye. Kim slings in a left hand and Amidu didn’t see that one.
Kim 10-9
Kim 67-66

battle axe of doom - January 27, 2012
10-9 Kim, 68-65
Kim buzzed Amidu with a few shots late. He’s eating a ton of punches, but they don’t seem to be doing much, and Amidu is feeling his shots.
Verklemptomaniac - January 27, 2012
he's not going anywhere though
ton of heart in the ring on both sides.
Monte Fisto - January 27, 2012
How long did Kim and Amidu have to prepare for each other? They’re just swinging at each other. Great entertainment, but they either don’t know what they’re doing, or really know, despite what anyone else says to them.

Lotta blood coming out of that cut on Amidu. Kim boxing a bit, as Atlas notes with wonder. He’s just got too much left here. Amidu is worn out. Body work has added up some, I believe.

Provodnikov with a body shot. He’s stalking. Torres kinda jerky. Another right to the body. And down goes Torres about halfway into the round. He’s “OK,” but looks about as interested in continuing as I might.
Provodnikov with a right to the chin, then a left hook. Two shots to the body. Provodnikov is slaughtering him. Torres getting hammered in the corner. He’s trying to fight out, but he’s too little. Provodnikov takes his foot off the gas.
Provodnikov 10-8

Matt Miller - January 27, 2012
10-8 Provodnikov. Probably could have ended it that round if he really wanted to.
schraubd - January 27, 2012
This will be done early
kelsquire - January 27, 2012
ruslan is a goddamn tank
battle axe of doom - January 27, 2012
If the ref had been skittish, he could’ve stopped the fight there… there was a moment where Provodinkov was throwing and Torres was offering no resistance
Apprentice - January 27, 2012
I was noticing that too.
BoxAnne - January 27, 2012
Only thing that’ll take this past four is Provodnikov carrying it.
Scott Christ - January 27, 2012
It didn't occur to me that Torres would look this small against Provodnikov
Matt Miller - January 27, 2012
side note #2: whatever happened to ricardo torres?
battle axe of doom - January 27, 2012
He wasn’t very good against Raul Pinzon so he stopped fighting.
Scott Christ - January 27, 2012
I think he retired after his KO loss to kendal holt. Ko by headbutt.
PhinsAllDay - January 27, 2012 via mobile
Provodnikov vs Torres Round 2
Provodnikov isn’t pressing here. He’s getting a little work in, not being foolish. Torres cracking back a little bit. The only thing that’s going to make Provodnikov press very soon is Torres hitting him too many times.
Provodnikov 10-9
Provodnikov 20-17
Scott Christ - January 27, 2012
I screwed up taking the over. Hopefully Provodnikov just cruises the rest othe way.
PhinsAllDay - January 27, 2012 via mobile
I'm with you there
Matt Miller - January 27, 2012
I thought that Provodnikov (that really hurts to type) would look better than he has here. I was stupid enough to compare him in style to Marciano.
Good fight, but nothing special.
DrRck - January 27, 2012
I'm enjoying this fight pretty well. When Torres throws it's a lot more interesting.
Matt Miller - January 27, 2012
Provodnikov vs Torres Round 3
Yeah, Torres hit him a few too many times and Provodnikov started zeroing in in the final minute of the round. Torres having moments, but this is Ruslan’s fight without question.
Provodnikov 10-9
Provodnikov 30-26
Scott Christ - January 27, 2012
Bizarro fact: Boxrec currently says that Torres lost this fight by TKO … in round 3. Whoops.
schraubd - January 27, 2012
odd
Matt Miller - January 27, 2012
???
BoxAnne - January 27, 2012
Thank god. Now I know when the world will end, and also how this fight will end. I can die happy.
DrRck - January 27, 2012
When is the world going to end?
I still have stuff to do.

Boxrec has a really shitty time machine.
Verklemptomaniac - January 27, 2012
Thank you for the Mayan calendar.
DrRck - January 27, 2012
They must have took the under. LOL
PhinsAllDay - January 27, 2012 via mobile
Provodnikov vs Torres Round 4
Torres having some moments. Provodnikov might be taking this TOO easy. Torres is at least going to try and do something if Provodnikov’s going to give him the chances to do so. But there’s an uppercut from Provodnikov. And now Ruslan is firing a bit more. Right to the body. Provodnikov rips a left to the body. He takes another round.
Provodnikov 10-9
Provodnikov 40-35
This is a better version of “fight that turns into sparring” than we usually see.
Scott Christ - January 27, 2012
“buy some CD’s”? really? c’mon teddy
battle axe of doom - January 27, 2012
What would FNF be without an overextended metaphor from Teddy Atlas?
Matt Miller - January 27, 2012
a lot better imo
battle axe of doom - January 27, 2012
Provodnikov vs Torres Round 5
Provodnikov 10-9
Provodnikov 50-44
Fight’s losing me.
Scott Christ - January 27, 2012
Man, if by some miracle Torres comes back and wins this we’ll have the ultimate Dewey Defeats Truman moment.
schraubd - January 27, 2012
Torres has alot of heart. the guy is trying his very best.
PhinsAllDay - January 27, 2012 via mobile
That’s over
Sam5001 - January 27, 2012
OK. I got a little distracted.
DrRck - January 27, 2012
Provodnikov vs Torres Round 6
Torres pouring it on a bit but all his friends and relatives yelling didn’t make that quite as great as it sounded. HUGE RIGHT and down goes David Torres!
Well, he got a bit too “game” for his own good. That one blew him up. He’s up, and he comes back fighting, but I think Ruslan is tired of all this. And perhaps just tired. Torres firing back, bless his heart. Look at Torres fight! Right hand Provodnikov AND ANOTHER AND DOWN GOES TORRES! IT IS OVER!
Ruslan Provodnikov KO-6
Scott Christ - January 27, 2012
damn………….mean ending
DPlainview - January 27, 2012

kelsquire - January 27, 2012
This is definitely not going to be a good pick em week for me.
Matt Miller - January 27, 2012
I’m guessing you also had it under 5.5…………….groan
DPlainview - January 27, 2012
Thanks for the RBR, in case i fall asleep during the swing bout, if there is one.
BoxAnne - January 27, 2012
RBR sucks without anyone here (I know, I used to do it), so don’t thank me, thank yourselves for making it actually fun.
Scott Christ - January 27, 2012
Go to sleep. All of tonight will exist forever here.
DrRck - January 27, 2012
That picture of Ortiz was an accurate depiction of his soul.
Matt Miller - January 27, 2012
What, was there not a picture?
Scott Christ - January 27, 2012
That made me spit out my drink. Thank you.
Sam5001 - January 27, 2012
At the end of the day, there was a picture.
Matt Miller - January 27, 2012
ok so probably another stupid question, but how does a top professional fighter not know he’s anemic? i’m just a normal dude, and i’ve known that i’m anemic for quite some time now.
battle axe of doom - January 27, 2012
Some people don’t regularly check in with doctors, even if they’re not feeling right.
Scott Christ - January 27, 2012
yeah but i’m assuming he has to do some exhaustive medical examinations before every fight. surely his anemia would have popped up on at least one of those test results right?
battle axe of doom - January 27, 2012
Not that exhaustive. They check thier heads and eyes harder, no diagnostice blood tests.
BoxAnne - January 27, 2012
berto doing his best ortiz impression by headbutting that heavy bag
battle axe of doom - January 27, 2012

Joe Tessitore not having it with symbolic rising at a count of 10½. I back this.
Scott Christ - January 27, 2012
Pretty fun FNF, overall.
