Mayweather vs Pacquiao: Arum Offers Floyd $45 Million Flat Fee

In response to Floyd Mayweather Jr offering a $40 million flat fee and no cut of the revenue streams to Manny Pacquiao for a fight, Bob Arum has offered Floyd a similar flat fee of $45 million to make the fight. The pissing contest just "got real," I guess, or at least real in the sense that anything about "Mayweather vs Pacquiao" is real.

In short, none of this means anything.

Manila Standard has a bit more from Arum about Pacquiao's payoffs, and why he's listed as a $6 million purse on Nevada's official pay sheets, while his guarantees for last year's two fights were said to be $20M and $22M:

He said that under the rules of the Nevada State Athletic Commission, the fighters need to be paid on the night of a fight.

To meet this requirement, Arum paid the NSAC $6 million for Pacquiao in his last fight against Juan Manuel Marquez, which the commission paid to the Filipino after the fight and which could be cashed the next day.

Arum indicated this was in order to comply with the requirements, even as he pointed out that "in the long form contract," a copy of which is given the Internal Revenue Service, Pacquiao’s guarantee for the Marquez fight was $22 million, which was paid in full within 10 days, even though the contract stipulated it could be paid within two months.

I don't much care about this angle, since I always was pretty sure Manny was getting the reported guarantees, and wasn't buying any of the "conspiracy theories" or whatever about the payoffs, but there you are. That's Arum's explanation.

Star-divide

Anyway, this all just goes on and on and on, but the two aren't going to fight in May, and there are already indications that they won't fight in November either. With Miguel Cotto seemingly leaning toward taking a fight with Mayweather on May 5 instead of rematching Pacquiao on June 9, Pacquiao may be pushed into Bob Arum's "tournament" idea that would see the Filipino face Timothy Bradley on June 9, and Juan Manuel Marquez matched with Lamont Peterson.

But Marquez won't fight Peterson without a guarantee that a win nets him the fight with Pacquiao, which is still his ultimate goal, even though he's very willing to fight Peterson to get there.

To get all that done, Arum may have to basically book Pacquiao (should he beat Bradley) against Marquez (or Peterson, who may want the same guarantee to fight Marquez) for November, which would push the "Mayweather fight" back to 2013.

Oh the fun we have!

I just wish someone would announce a fight already. Enough. Let's move on. Stop telling us about what we know isn't happening and tell us what it is.

PR ploy. Arum offers Mayweather a deal he knows Floyd won’t accept to save face and not look like he’s ducking the fight.

so what

was floyd doing when he offered Manny a deal that he knew Manny would not accept.

SO

Both sides offer each other deals that look good to the general public, but they know the other won’t accept. Both camps trying to save face when there is no face left to save. Seems like they are less concerned with making the fight and more concerned with which side will shoulder the blame when the fight doesn’t happen.

The diffetence is...Floyd offered Manny a deal that Manny publicly said that he WOULD take.

Remember that? Manny said he would take the smaller purse? Then when Floyd called he said he can’t take that smaller purse that he just said that he would take?

Yeah, in response to Mayweather offering Pacquiao a deal he knew Pacquiao wouldn’t accept to save face and not look like he’s ducking the fight. Same shit, different name.

At least Floyd is the guy pushing for the fight in the media. The sticking point on his end appears to be the date, it’s not like Bob Arum made this offer for a May 5th fight. All I see from Arum’s end is excuses (Manny’s cuts, temporary stadium, not enough promotion time) and this counter-offer still does nothing to address Mayweather’s date.

May is off the table. They’re not fighting in May. The alleged target now is November. This is just Arum bullshitting, more or less.

Floyd told Mannt 40 million

Which equates to him getting 70% and Manny getting 30%.

Floyd is all talk but his actions and his words (and his proffer) suggest what has been the case thus far. He does not really want the fight.

And Pacmam does?

Is that what your sources are telling you?

the media

a fight with these personalities will never be made in the media. in effect saying floyd is pushing in the media is saying atleast floyd is pissing in the wind

They'll fight, believe it!!!

When it doesn’t matter to us anymore (Hopkins vs Jones II)…

Trinidad-Jones… bring on the titans!

Senario?

Safe fights for Manny are getting less safe… If Manny takes an L, will TR actually make that fight with Floyd?

I would ask the same question for Floyd, but Floyd’s options seems less dangerous than Manny’s.

Well

Manny’s career has survived loses and draws because of his attitude and the way he fights. Floyd’s entire mystique is predicated on that 0, when/if it’s gone, he is damaged goods and will probably take a huge hit in revenue. I agree that one of these fight will end badly for either fighter, we just have to hope it’s against one another.

True but...

Floyd’s current options are Canelo and Cotto, they don’t seem too dangerous to Floyd’s style. Actually I said this before, Canelo and Cotto actually have similar boxing styles.

Manny on the other hand right now has Bradley who can probably get to Manny and Marquez who many think that he was robbed of two victories in their three fights.

You’re right about Floyd’s 0 and Mannys current winning streak, but will a lost force the “mega fight” to happen or will the other party say “oh well you had ur chance, now get lost.”

Floyd’s entire mystique is predicated on that 0

I don’t entirely agree with you, in so far as when Mayweather does bother himself enough to get into the ring, he really is amazing (disclosure: I detest Mayweather; I am a Pacquiao fan).

I think that both Pacquiao and Mayweather are “damaged goods,” in the sense that they are aging, but they can still both be regarded as primus inter pares.

intended for younggunzvt.

I hate to say it…the precious “0” of Mayweather guarantees him one more major pay day. Everybody likes to see a pugilist overcome adversity. (ie: Leonard, Tyson, Ali, etc)

Oppose to Manny and in the case if he loses…since the fact that everyone know that he has alot of flaws and he has been riding a luck streak. And in his past fights, you have seen him slip…Uncle Bob will probably put him back in it, but not for the same money. That is why it is imperative for him to control both fighter. So no matter win or lose …he wins.

With Floyd, if they fight…and Floyd beats Manny. Bob Arum loses his cash cow… boxing media will say that Manny was overhyped and a product of careful opponent matching.

Manny will

not look bad to the public by losing to Floyd. That loss will be the used as a foundation for tune up and another big fight before he leaves the ring. His career, humility and fan base will follow him through his retirement and into the hall of fame.

He was not over-hyped

The guy is one of the mopst exciting fighters you will ever see over a sustained career.

Sure, everyone will buy that.

In spades.

Bloomberg metrics used to evaluate endorsement value
Above your pay grade

The list, compiled by analysts from CSE (formerly known as Career Sports and Entertainment), takes into account the endorsement money an athlete earns, social prominence, social media prominence and behavior off the field as well as performance on the field.

"It really showcases his marketability in our minds," said David Newman, the leader of the CSE Analytics Team, which came up with the list. "He performs well (inside the ring) and can be a great spokesman (outside)."
