Before going into various arguments, let me just say that I cannot believe that I am actually writing this piece. I never thought I would defend the business acumen of the members of the venerable ‘Jersey Shore' but here I am. I will say that Snooki's venture into boxing makes business sense, but it is also good for the sport in general and I will tell you why.
First off, she has media capital and she is trying to parlay it into a revenue stream. Just look at when Snooki announced that she was getting into boxing promotions. She got stories all through the traditional boxing outlets but she also spread to other non-traditional outlets. If you run a Google search for "Snooki boxing" you find that Snooki got a nice interview on a New York radio show and that she is going to be promoting on Jay Leno tonight. When was the last time that a promoter was on Leno for a small fight?

She has a social media following of about 4 million people on Twitter. As compared to traditional boxing powers, this is absolutely amazing. The official Top Rank feed has 38K followers, Oscar De La Hoya has 150K followers, and Freddie Roach has 55K followers. The only person who comes close is Floyd Mayweather who has 2 million followers. Like her or hate her, she has twice the social media impact of Floyd Mayweather. At this point, She already has successfully marketed her personal brand to people through social media and she has the ability to reach to large number of people very quickly. Also I would assume that a good number of her followers are not fans of boxing, So even by her minimal actions right now, she has riled up some interest in boxing from non-fans and that is always good.
Finally, it's not like Snooki would be a devil surrounded by saints. Lou DiBella, Gary Shaw, and Bob Arum aren't exactly angels, so its not like Snooki's antics would be that far out of place. Oscar has his lingerie pictures and Snooki has drunk pictures of her flashing everyone. Gary Shaw has connections in New Jersey, Snooki has a bunch of connections in New Jersey. Lou DiBella is very Italian, Snooki is very Italian. The more that I think about it, the more I think she will fit right in.
Also like the big promoters, Snooki has an established group of publicists with her. However, her advantage is that her publicists are more accustomed to working through different mediums than traditional boxing channels and therefore they can reach a greater number of people as mentioned earlier. At this point it should be noted that she is not working alone, she has a team of publicists and marketers working with her.
Snooki has advantages in public eye and social media that can be leveraged into a successful promotional business. Her personality flaws are no worse than the current crop promoters and her qualities aren't terribly different either. If she can successfully promote her first fight, then I wouldn't be surprised to see her establish small stable of lower level fighters.

Very good, unbiased write up.
Having a hard time being convinced shes in it for more than just a ‘smush buddy’ though.

It is hard to take her seriously, but then again it is hard to take any boxing promoter seriously.

Who know nothing about the sport of boxing. I have no idea what exactly she has in mind regarding this endeavor. But if she treats boxing as a joke or makes a mockery of it, you are right. Lot of people will be watching

Did you know about Snooki before she came into the boxing game? Her publicists are very good.
Waldo Rastel - January 3, 2012
I’m sure they are. But do they know boxing?
Eugene Banks - January 3, 2012
Honestly I would want them not to know anything about boxing. Having fresh talent in the game is a good thing.
Waldo Rastel - January 4, 2012
If one is ignorant to the sport of boxing than how can one respect it? Easy. They can’t. It wouldn’t surprise me if her shows are heavily WWE influenced.
Eugene Banks - January 4, 2012
oh no not that. what if someone actually goes to this shit or has fun while there?
Scott Christ - January 4, 2012
I’m sure the people who attended them KO Nation fights had fun. But apparently fighters boxing while a dance party was going on didn’t go over to well. Boxing should never be mixed with anything. It should always be the main focal point. While I can see the possibilities in the small chance everything is done well. I can tell you it wouldn’t shock me if we’re hit with “Snooki presents Snooki and a couple of guys boxing”

All they have to know is publicizing. It’s a thing in itself.
And in view of the lack of publicizing of fights locally or even on TV rampant in boxing, they could hardly be worse, and more likely are better.

Rebuttal: she makes Ronnie look like an intellectual.

Geez

If it gets butts in the seats to watch boxing, more power to her. Who knows, maybe she really likes boxing.

legitimate question: is this site not allowed to blast celebrities in their articles? paris hilton was given a queen’s treatment that one time, and now two articles on snooki without one negative word said against her.
battle axe of doom - January 3, 2012
I mean I could blast her but what’s the point in that?
Waldo Rastel - January 3, 2012
We did blast Paris Hilton once
And then she actually responded to it and all was forgiven.

Talking about weird moments in 2011
that certainly was one on BLH ;)

What? I dumped on Hilton once, then she did lots of stuff that actually made me think I was wrong, so I apologized. Why am I supposed to hate Snooki anyway? Because she’s on a stupid reality show? What do I care? I write about boxing, which is just as stupid as Jersey Shore, and I’ve seen both.

OOH THAT POPULAR THING, IT GRINDS MY GEARS
LET ME TELL YOU ABOUT KID ROCK, GUYS.
Actually I hate Kid Rock.
Scott Christ - January 4, 2012
She has two reality shows, there is going to be a Jersey Shore spinoff. Maybe she could try to force MTV into carrying some of her boxing matches. That would be some serious news.
Waldo Rastel - January 4, 2012
Well I doubt that.
What I do like is, look, I’ll be honest: The Hylands aren’t very good. But stacking three Irish brothers on the east coast is not a bad idea to start.
Scott Christ - January 4, 2012
I’m not so sure about Snooki as a real force in boxing, but all news is good news at this point. Your analysis of her media importance is interesting, and I can see some places where we agree.

why is this pig being allowed to anywhere near a civilized thing like boxing?
catsmasher - January 4, 2012
