Polish heavyweight star Tomasz Adamek says that HBO has been very receptive to the idea of a rematch with Chris Arreola sometime this summer, but that he's staying the course and still targeting a spring tune-up beforehand, according to Luke Furman.
Adamek (44-2, 28 KO) is coming off of a one-sided but valiant loss to Vitali Klitschko in September, and recently parted ways with his American promoters at Main Events.
His tune-up, which he's said previously will come in March, will probably take place in Poland. But he's also been very adamant about a rematch with Arreola. The two met in April 2010, with Adamek winning a good fight on points.
Arreola (34-2, 29 KO) had an extremely busy 2011, dropping a lot of weight and getting into much better shape for wins over Joey Abell, Nagy Aguilera, Kendrick Releford, Friday Ahunanya, and Raphael Butler. At the end of the day (!), though, none of those were truly quality wins -- all are gatekeepers on their best days, and Arreola was a heavy favorite to beat them all, and would have been even if he were still weighing in at 260 pounds instead of 235-240.
Arreola has been talking about a potential clash with world heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko, which Klitshcko's trainer Emanuel Steward wants because it's a fight that American fight fans and TV networks might actually care about.
So as good a fight as an Adamek vs Arreola rematch is -- it's one of the better potential action fights in the division -- it may not happen simply because Arreola is in a good position to face The Man in the division. If he lost to Wladimir, he could still fight Adamek. If he lost to Adamek, he can't fight Wladimir.
Arreola is scheduled to face Eric Molina (18-1 14 KO) on the Williams vs Ishida undercard in Texas on February 18.

I’m a fan of both guys and loved the first fight, and I still think Arreola would have won it if he hadn’t injured his hand partway through. As long as he stays in shape I think he will take the rematch cleanly and possibly win by stoppage, as he managed to hurt Adamek a few times in their first fight but never could get close enough for him to finish it.

I think that a rematch is a great idea. I’m a fan of both of them also, and I really am amazed at how Arreola has managed to maintain his quest to become New! Improved!
Adamek, meanwhile, is very, very tough, and seems to take fighting seriously. I’d love to see how a rematch plays out.
