Victor Ortiz's Trainer: "Why Not a Mayweather Rematch?"

Chris Robinson of the Examiner spoke with Victor Ortiz's trainer Danny Garcia about what Victor will do next in the wake of Andre Berto being forced out of the February 11 fight due to a ruptured bicep. Richard Schaefer has said that if Berto's recovery period is significant, Ortiz will move on and look for another fight. Garcia had some ideas.

One is the winner of the February 25 bout between Marcos Maidana (an old conqueror of Ortiz) and Devon Alexander. Alexander has already said he wanted to face the Ortiz-Berto winner, and there's an OK chance that the winner of that fight would be ready again in late May or early June, all open dates on HBO right now.

Star-divide

Garcia also mentioned Amir Khan, with whom Ortiz is friendly but not too friendly, but the really interesting quote from Garcia came here:

"You never know, Mayweather doesn’t have a fight right now because him and Pacquiao, they’re still deciding. Why not fight Mayweather in May?"

I've mentioned this since word of the injury first got out, and nobody's seemed too excited by the idea. I don't love it either, but Floyd really does have to fight someone, and that decision needs to come soon. Ortiz is now free, and I'm pretty certain of a few things:

  1. Ortiz will fight for less money than Miguel Cotto or Canelo Alvarez.
  2. Ortiz will be an easier negotiation, on more counts than just money. He's a pure Golden Boy guy, more of a "tell me who to fight" guy. That's not a knock, by the way.
  3. Ortiz will gladly take the rematch.

Would you buy it again? Did you think Ortiz did enough the first time to make a rematch at least a little bit interesting? With Floyd likely coming in a bit distracted, do you think Victor would have a shot at the shocker upset?

ill buy it cuz im a floyd fan

but it is the potential floyd fight i want to see the least

Not buying it. As far as I’m concerned, Ortiz quit the first fight. No interest in seeing it again.

Huh?

How did he quit the first fight by getting knocked out?

No real interest, apart from seeing Floyd in the ring again.

Hurry up and pick a solid opponent Floyd!!!!!

My cinco de mayo is counting on it.

Say what you will about Floyd outside the ring, but once inside the ring he’s focused, I don’t see Ortiz bringing anything new to the table against Floyd, it will be a money fight (no pun intended).

Vic had his chance and blew it. Floyd should move on to a new challenge.

Khan/Ortiz

At 147, I think that match is major, major trouble for Khan.

I’d pick Ortiz without hesitating at all. I really don’t think Khan has anything that gives Ortiz much trouble. Ortiz is a big, big welter, quick, big power, lefty.

I dont know. I think that jab will trouble him plenty.

I wouldn’t buy it. I explained why in another thread last night, but it’s ludicrous that a guy why gets knocked out after trying to hug a guy for the thrid time in ten seconds after flagrantly fouling his opponent is going to get an immediate rematch. No way would I pay money for it.

Won't buy it
wont buy it cuz I'll never give my money to floyd

ortiz might be stupid for headbutting n hugging n kissing but a true champion would of never accepted a victory on a cheap shot.

you’ll be amazed what “true” champions will do.

Man, Vic deserves anything that comes his way

He’s a big goof, obviously, but I’ll never understand how he got up from Berto slamming him to the mat with that scary right hand in the 6th.

Berto thought he killed him and so did I.

Like Scott said though, he may have the inside track because they have a built-in way to sell the fight (how the fight ended last time) and Ortiz seems to know that he doesn’t bring a whole lot to the table, whereas Cotto and Canelo have their pride. And we know Floyd doesn’t like his opponents thinking they’re somebody.

I'd watch it

I would just want to see what would have happened the first go round if Ortiz hadn’t made a stupid rookie mistake.

I'd watch it

I think Ortiz was giving Floyd all he could handle. I want to see it through to a real finish.

I didn’t pay the first time, nor would I the second. But I would watch it :)

I’d watch it, but I don’t want it to happen. Floyd has said before that when you beat someone right the first time, you don’t need to rematch them, the only time you need a rematch is when it’s close, and you should do it right the second time.

A win by K.O is right the first time, and going a second time wouldn’t be worth it. Khan vs Ortiz would be a good fight, lightening fast vs. caveman power… I’d side with Ortiz, and it would definitely push Khan down as an even less legitimate threat to the P4P ranking.

Mayweather/Canelo seems premature for Canelo and just a terrible idea. Mayweather/Cotto sounds like a good idea because Cotto is experienced, has losses on his record, is a good draw, and has been in there with some of the best. Canelo just doesn’t have the real experience with top level fighters. Guerrero wouldn’t draw enough… So pretty much he needs to cough up some cash for Cotto as a legitimate contender.
