Bad Left Hook

In case you missed it, Oscar De La Hoya used Twitter again recently, this time to suggest a rematch between Amir Khan and Breidis Prescott.

One thing I really like is he used the word "lads" so that I know he knows all about British people, like that time he was talking about Ricky Hatton and said he wanted to go have "a pint," because that's what British people drink, is a pint, the lads.

The other thing I really like is that De La Hoya is suggesting that Khan face a guy who has lost his last two, and is just 3-4 in his last seven fights. So personally, I can personally see why Oscar would personally like this fight, I guess.

Actually, I don't totally mean that (I mean, it's true, but whatever), as I personally believe that personally, it's a perfectly good fight to make right now.

Khan (26-2, 18 KO) is likely to return in March, back in the United Kingdom, somewhat licking his wounds after his December 10 loss to Lamont Peterson, and the fact that Peterson isn't going to give him an immediate rematch, which Golden Boy seemed to figure was just, you know, going to happen, because that's what they wanted and they're all used to getting everything they want.

But Peterson pretty much told them to buzz off for a while, so they've gotta fight someone, and if a rehab mission for Amir Khan's career is going to be what's next, then Prescott (24-4, 19 KO) makes sense. For one thing, Prescott is only a good fighter for about five rounds at a time, so if Amir Khan can not get knocked out in 54 seconds this time, chances are he wins and avenges his 2008 loss to the Colombian.

Prescott, 28 and with a career that's frankly going nowhere right now, is still very marketable as a Khan opponent, especially in the UK where way ahead of any struggles he's had since beating Khan, the No. 1 thing about him is that he's the guy who flattened Amir Khan over three years ago. It has been said that Khan has ducked a Prescott rematch, but really, Khan moved on to bigger things while Prescott's career flatlined.

But right now, neither of them are exactly soaring to new heights. Khan needs a win, and the Prescott fight, for him, may give him more credit with fans than just about anything else could right now, unless he were to fight and beat Tim Bradley or something, and Bradley is more concerned with maybe fighting Manny Pacquiao or Juan Manuel Marquez next, so Khan's not on his radar.

Prescott has nothing to lose but another fight, so what would he care? He'd get the chance he's been banging on about for years, to prove that his knockout of Amir Khan was no fluke, and he can do it again. And frankly, he can do it again. He could lose 10 straight and still be dangerous early against Amir Khan.

So I like the idea, really. I don't see any need for HBO to pick up the fight if it happens, because I don't think Khan vs Prescott II is something HBO should spend their money on, but Golden Boy could put together an affordable (ha, right) afternoon pay-per-view if they wanted, or sell the fight for a small fee to ESPN to stream on ESPN3, or I guess go to Epix, if they plan to run boxing in 2012. But this shouldn't be a gimme HBO pickup just because it's Amir Khan and Golden Boy are promoting the fight.
