Manny Pacquiao apparently had such brutal cuts in November that he can't fight Floyd Mayweather on May 5. (Photo by Ethan Miller/Getty Images)
Floyd Mayweather Jr was supposed to report today for a 90 (well 87) day jail sentence in a Las Vegas detention center. Instead, he has until June, as a judge has granted his legal team's requested of a five-month delay on serving the sentence, which will allow Mayweather to keep his May 5 fight date on HBO pay-per-view.
And guess what? Bob Arum says Manny Pacquiao won't fight Floyd on May 5.
"I don't think it has any impact," Arum said, upon learning of the ruling. "No impact at all. Manny isn't going to be ready to fight until summertime."

This one is from Jake Donovan at BoxingScene.com:
Preliminary discussions had the record-breaking Filipino southpaw rumored to fight on June 7, with a quartet of options that didn’t include Mayweather on the premise of his beginning a 90-day prison sentence on Friday.
... "Right now, we have no idea if he can go in May," Arum explained. "He’s supposed to have his cut examined. I’m going over to speak with him regarding his future, and we can go from there."
Mayweather will begin his sentence on June 1. Pacquiao supposedly hasn't been medically cleared due to some cuts suffered on November 12 against Juan Manuel Marquez. (For the record, June 7 is a Thursday, so I'm guessing June 9 is actually more likely.)
I hate to say this and open up the entire boring discussion for the nine millionth time, but if you're someone who thinks there's a good and an evil in this whole scenario, and Mayweather is the evil preventing the fight from happening, well...
It's kind of hard to think that Bob Arum wants this fight to happen. "Maybe later, maybe later, maybe later." He's said the fight could happen in November, or five months after Pacquiao is expected to be in the ring next. But that leaves plenty of time to find excuses again.
And I'm not saying Mayweather is the good witch, either. But we're at a point where you get this great big opening, with Floyd's sentence delayed, and now Manny won't be ready until a few days after Floyd has to report to jail?
It's always something, isn't it? And obviously you can play the card of, "Oh, come on, this is BOXING! and these things happen! Cuts are tough! You don't even know because you are not a boxer, you jerk!" And fine, great, I'm a jerk, but I'm having some difficulty here. How about you?

Bob Arum must be one of the shittiest PR guys of all time. All hes done since the Marquez fight is ruin Pac’s image and make him look like a huge ducker.

If I were to bet on who Floyd fights May 5th
I say Mayweather vs. Canelo happens

that’s what I was tryin’ to tell y’all BEFORE
Scott Christ - January 6, 2012
but
they all musta forgot?
journeyintosound - January 6, 2012
Probably. I’ll GUARANTEE Canelo on May 5.
GUARANTEE.
Scott Christ - January 6, 2012
what happens IF canelo beats mayweather?
el javi - January 6, 2012 via Android app
Then I guess the Mayans were right...
battlestar - January 6, 2012
Then America and Mexico will have a new super star....
But Canelo needs to eat a few cases of spinach before that becomes anywhere near possible.

I do remember you saying that Scott and I agreed with ya

49er fans have short memories, they’ve already forgotten the more than a decade of mediocrity….
Chris Sarda - January 6, 2012
I guess Canelo’s about to get himself an L.
BoxAnne - January 6, 2012
makes me laugh
that automatically canelo has no chance of beating money. we should just mark an L for canelo and not even have the fight.

Yea, typical boxing promter BS. Arum just has a strong hatred for Mayweather, and Mayweather is every bit as stupid and evil as Arum.
Personally as a hardcore boxing fan I’ve moved on. I don’t care anymore. I hate Mayweather as a human being, but I’ll watch his skills. Pac plays a character of some super good guy that I’ve gotten annoyed with. Pac absolutley has the ability to tell Arum to get the fight made, so its his fault just as much.
Fact is if Pac or May wanted the fight they’d do it. I blame everyone one involved on both sides, its stupid all around and I don’t care anymore. I kind of hope Karma comes around and teaches all on both sides a lesson. Like May gets raped in prision and Pac looses (for real) his next fight or something.

This sport is pretty terrible.
I was always a casual fan of boxing. Would watch the big fights only and usually not live, but last year I started following it a lot more after watching the Berto/Ortiz fight live (by accident, really.), but my interest in the sport is going to be brief, I can already tell.
I can’t think of any other sport where it’s participants go so far out of their way to NOT compete against each other. It just blows my mind the reasons and excuses some of these fighters and their camps and promoters come up with to not fight someone they aren’t 99% sure they can win against. It’s ridiculous. And then if a big fight DOES happen, it’s usually littered with cowardly tactics like if one guy gets headbutted by accident he will fly out of the ring onto the judges table, play dead, show up to the press conference in a neck brace and then both fighters will do all they can to not have a rematch.
This isn’t happening in any other sport. The Dallas Mavericks weren’t refusing to play the Miami Heat because they were underdogs, an MLB team isn’t going to completely duck another team because they aren’t confident about their chances against the starting pitcher for a certain game, this sort of stuff isn’t happening in MMA. In MMA, guys are eager to compete against the best and sometimes take fights out of their skill level simply because they want to compete against someone better.
NoHo - January 6, 2012
see your problem was comparing boxing to other organized normal sports its more a lose organisation of rival fractions that don’t like working with each other
pong102 - January 6, 2012
When Mayweather and Pacquiao are gone there are no huge money fights for people to aspire to boxing will become a great sport again for those of us who love the sporting aspect of it.
Everyone else draws so poorly here in the states eventually to make any money people will have to fight the better fights.
I’m being positive and optimistic!
Chris Sarda - January 6, 2012
Sigh
Here we go again. I used to basically think that Mayweather was ducking (because he values his undefeated record more than almost anything), but it’s pretty clear that Manny isn’t bending over backwards to finally make this happen.
BTW, Mayweather’s people have played this perfectly. They set the May 5th date, basically called out Pacquiao, and now have even worked his jail sentence around the date. Regardless of the reality, Manny’s going to look bad if this doesn’t finally get made.
AndrewDM - January 6, 2012
I admire the restraint of hardcore boxing fans
Because I’m only a casual fan and Arum’s comments make me want to punch someone in the face.
You know who’s to blame in this mess for this fight not happening? EVERYONE who is associated with either fighter and the fighters themselves.
Worldisart - January 6, 2012
EXACTLY
there’s just no sustained urgency to make this fight happen from either side. sometimes it seems like manny is pushing and floyd is ducking, and sometimes the other way around.
the bottom line is if even ONE of these two parties REALLY wanted it, the way in my opinion they should want it, they would have shamed the other party into it by now.
Clifford J - January 6, 2012
Yes.
Scott Christ - January 6, 2012
What I don't understand are the motives.
Are they all really this scared to take a lost? Do they think boxing fans, of all levels, will stop supporting their boxers if they lose a fight? TR and Money May are responsible for this hype, and they will have to own up to it at some point.
Clove_art - January 6, 2012
If there’d be a clear winner, the market-value of the looser would for sure take a big hit in the public.
DrHenrik - January 6, 2012
I do see that happening if there is a huge KO....
But I feel the fight could be a drown out decision type of fight. And if they made this fight years ago a KO loss probably won’t have hurt either fighters reputation that much, right?
Clove_art - January 6, 2012
IMO, if they had fought a few years ago, there’d be only one superstar now in the public opinion, not two. I.e., one huge cash cow less to milk. And the same could happen now, if it’s not going to be sth like a highly controversial decision.
From a financial perspective, I think they should absolutely make this fight – but as late as possible.
DrHenrik - January 6, 2012
You visit any boxing forum and everyone is picking sides. I think the fans of each fighter don’t want this fight to happen more than the actual fighters do. But they want the other guy to be the one to blame for it not happening so there’s a lot of mud slinging going around.
Whoever loses this fight will get roasted bad in the hardcore fans minds, but not really in the general public’s consciousness.
At this point, both sides are to blame. And the high point for making this fight happen is long gone so if it ever does happen now it will be more of a get this out of the way type fight since it’s been waited on for so long. Both guys are already nearing the end of their primes.
And if it doesn’t happen I think it’s going to be the main thing brought up in each of their legacies.
Tough spot for Manny and Mayweather to be in, but they only have themselves to blame.
NoHo - January 6, 2012
“Hardcore boxing fans” are some of the worst “fans” in all of sports.
Scott Christ - January 6, 2012
Anyone who calls him/her a “hardcore” boxing fan, isn’t a hardcore boxing fan. Once you learn enough about boxing you realize that you are missing half of it because of great stuff going down in Asia and Europe.
Waldo Rastel - January 6, 2012
worst fans in what way?
BoxAnne - January 6, 2012
They’re loud, obnoxious, often ill-informed, everyone sucks apparently to the point I wonder if any of them even like boxing at all, they lack rational thought, and in too large a percentage for my taste, are ignorant, racist, hate-spewing slugs.
By the way, I don’t count people here as “hardcore boxing fans.” People who call themselves “hardcore boxing fans” tend to give the very idea a bad name.
Scott Christ - January 6, 2012
I have never heard someone I respect refer to themselves as a "hardcore boxing fan"
Pretty much totally agree with Scott on this one
Waldo Rastel - January 6, 2012

No one (with power) is demanding these two fight each other
Certainly not Floyd, a man who is by all appearances his own boss.
Nor Manny, who has a contact with TR but the power to influence his choices.
Certainly not Golden Boy who have zero contractual ties to either fighter and thus no present power
Nor TR, who has finanacial interests but multiple if not unlimited options.
This fight just may be as far away as ever.
Floyd and his team breathed a sigh of relief today (Ellerbe’s word’s).
They never once mentioned Pacquiao. In fact, they appear headed toward other opponents already pre-selected; Canelo and Guerrero.
Only Floyd Mayweather and Todd duBoef have spoken, briefly…but nothing further ever developed. No talks. No negotiations.
TR in the meantime has been making preparations to present Manny with four options, none of which are Floyd.
The fact is that no one in this cluster fuck wants this fight bad enough to make it, despite what we the fans say and the media report.

on the cut business..
Diego Sanchez suffered THIS cut in December 2009 and was licensed to fight in Nevada in May 2010.
So no…I don’t really want to hear that the tiny cut Manny suffered in the Marquez fight in November will keep him out until summer.

Clifford J - January 6, 2012
BJ busted Diego's head to the white meat
No one with half a brain who follows combat sports believes that garbage Arum is spewing about a cut needing more than half a year to heal. Andre Wards fight was delayed for like a month after the cut he suffered in sparring before his fight with Froch.
Shaking my head at this nonsense…

Chris Mannix of SI brought up a good point on Twitter: In Nevada, judges are elected. Vegas needs the money from Floyd fighting on May 5.
Scott Christ - January 6, 2012
Apparently, Chris Mannix is quite popular tonight…
Oli Goldstein - January 6, 2012 via mobile
Maybe he missed his true calling as a court reporter?
El Destruyo - January 6, 2012
Vegas needs the money
Yes they do. I have no clue what the numbers might be. But I’m sure the local economy has a huge boost from Mayweather fights. All fights really, but he definitely drives more I’m sure.
As far as my take on the fight, I think I threw in the towel a few months back. If it happens great if it doesn’t then we will have a 30 for 30 special 15 yrs from now on the greatest fight that never happened and that will make for a really cool one hour show.
I just wish Manny would make it clear before either of them fight that he didn’t want the fight or he couldn’t make the fight… Whatever really. I jus don’t trust hearing the answers from Arum.
RRod806 - January 6, 2012 via iPhone app
The numbers were outlined a while back, and the amount of money Floyd and Manny bring to the Vegas strip for a fight week is staggering. I mean absolutely staggering. It’s huge stuff.
Scott Christ - January 6, 2012
No no doubt it is… My wife works a commission job at MGM and I’ve been tasked to keep her informed of when his and Pacquiao’s fights are (even if they happen at Mandalay Bay) months in advance so she can request the prime hours. For whatever reason Mayweather and Pacquiao inspire people to buy 300 dollar jeans…
It well known, but these are the only two guys that draw at all here any more, if Pakistanis were racially profiled when they got on planes there would have absolutely no one at the Maidana/Khan fight, but Mayweather… even my grandmother cares about that for some reason…
Mayweather, Pacquiao, Brock Lesnar and GSP are all this city cares about… oh and there’s gambling too…
Chris Sarda - January 7, 2012
The Nevada legal system does sound like a joke. I just saw a Tweet from Chris Mannix which says that it isn’t unprecedented for people who’ve committed misdemeanours to rearrange the timing of their prison sentence in the state. That, to me, is baffling. You commit a crime, you do the time; apparently, in Nevada, you commit the crime and then, well, just pick and choose when you serve the sentence!
Oli Goldstein - January 6, 2012 via mobile
Sure, but I don't know that it's all that unique...
Blagojevich was initially given about two months to report to jail, and was recently given an extra month so that he could sell his home or something like that – and this is in Federal court.

Sigh...
I’ve long since stopped caring. I haven’t bought a Pac or Money fight in years, and really can’t get too worked up over them avoiding one another anymore. I cared 2 years ago…now its just old. Sounds like Arum is in the wrong this time, but both sides have been to blame…many, many times. I mean, I’ll obviously get the fight if it ever happens…but I’ve long since stopped caring about whether it will or not.
