Dyah Davis vs Alfonso Lopez: Live Results and Commentary for Friday Night Fights Season Premiere

Dyah Davis meets Alfonso Lopez in the main event of tonight's Friday Night Fights on ESPN2 and ESPN3.

Dyah Davis meets Alfonso Lopez in the main event of tonight's Friday Night Fights on ESPN2 and ESPN3.

Tonight at 9 p.m. EST on ESPN2 and ESPN3, Friday Night Fights returns to the airwaves from Key West, with a 10-round super middleweight main event.

In the main event, second generation fighter Dyah Davis (20-2-1, 9 KO) meets Alfonso Lopez (22-1, 17 KO) in another well-matched fight that hopefully will pick up where the excellent FNF season of 2011 left off. This morning we previewed the card, and I'm hoping this is the good Dyah Davis tonight. As Brick said in the comments, Davis can be a little inconsistent. Lopez, meanwhile, has just one really significant fight on his record, a May 2011 majority decision loss to Kelly Pavlik, which was closer than almost anyone expected it would be going in.

In the co-feature, a pair of prospects do battle at 154 pounds, as Steve Martinez (11-0, 9 KO) faces Denis Douglin (13-1, 8 KO). Neither are big-time blue chippers, but Martinez has some promise, and Douglin is looking to get himself righted after an upset loss in early 2010.

Following Friday Night Fights we'll move immediately to tonight's ShoBox double-header, in a separate post, which will start at 11 p.m. EST, so get ready for a good night of fights as we get the live coverage of 2012 kicked off in style.

I just discovered I have ESPN Deportes and I can watch “Golpe a Golpe” before watching FNF! Awesome!

They’re speculating that Cotto is in the running for the May 5th fight with Mayweather.

Marquez has a hell of a time saying “Maravilla”… keeps fumbling all over that one =)

this is my favorite website in the entire wide world

thank you for all your hard work Scott

Seconded
Extremely excited

FNF Premiere!

Was talking to one of my friends about my exuberance

And his reply was…“Literally, one the 7 remaining boxing fans”

If he only knew about my brothers here on Bad Left Hook.

nice intro video
Was just in Key West...

for a bachelor party less than a year ago. It took me back. Great time.

“I love the fans.”

I’ll take that bet.

Was Atlas going for weight loss

or was he diagnosed with something? He looks bad.

A very good evening to all

I have been itching for a good fight plan for weeks now. Finally it’s back. Yeah!

Bernado Osuna in the studio chair.

Impress us, Bernardo.

I like this host much better than Coach. Is he a college bball guy or something now?

I think Coach is just a SportsCenter guy. He doesn’t specialize in anything and is just a reader of stuff.

He used to be very good as a straight man for the Rock.

Fuck the Rock. I preferred Coach’s work with Tajiri.

I haven’t watched wrasslin’ regularly since all the Benoit crap, but I still have fond memories of Tajiri from ECW and his run in WWE.

Tajiri vs Taz on ECW on TNN in August ’99 is one of my favorite ECW matches. It was short but so well-executed; it was like they packed 15 minutes into six or whatever it was.

You can also interact on twitter with me at @badlefthook, but leave your Pacquiao-Mayweather questions to @osunaespn and @ESPNFNF

Manfredo vs Edouard: 2011’s most-watched FNF show

A little surprising

with Contender hx…….maybe not so

so fired up for FNF

Up first: Steve Martinez (11-0, 9 KO) vs Denis “Momma’s Boy” Douglin (13-1, 8 KO), 8 rds, 154 lbs.

Delvin Rodriguez doing colour on the Spanish broadcast

Awesome. They guy deserves a chance to build up a fan base after the Wolak fights and the number of close fights he’s gotten screwed in.

Mommas boy without a doubt one of the dumbest nicknames ever

I like it. I’ve had enough Terminating Executioners From Hell and all that. At least his nickname fits him.

The bright side is she’s already there if he cries for her

Where I come from nicknames are given by your friends and are rarely flattering

most athletes pick their own nicknames. Absolutely ridiculous

Boo Boo is far stupider

Won’t argue that

Try Sugar Poo

Yeah, I knew there was one stupider than that one, just didn’t know if it was plain Poo or Sugar Poo.

Martinez vs Douglin Round 1

Within 20 seconds, I’m already worried about Douglin being wide open for a right hand down the pipe if Martinez can throw one. Teddy psychin’ me out, man. Both throwing, neither landing crisp to start. Both look a little tight early. No idea what the weather is out there. I’ll look it up between rounds.

Left hand from Douglin lands with about a minute left. Martinez spins out of the corner. Right hook from Douglin, then he slips and falls down. That’s twice he’s slipped. His footwork looks horrendous. He’s all off balance and he comes in very slowly. I actually think he’s right there to win the round, and I’m probably going to give it to him here, but he’s goofy as hell so far. Both crack at the bell, but it’s time for Alive 2 or whatever.

Douglin 10-9

61 and clear in Key West, so that’s pretty damn mild.

nice rt…………Douglin looked hurt for a second

I agree with Teddy’s prediction (Douglin will be doing pretty well until he’s caught by a big shot).

Douglin is lucky he is so much faster. Martinez’s reach may catch up to him.

Martinez 10-9, 19-19. Good fight.

Yea, even matched

Douglin style of fighting reminds me of former Olympian Dante Craig.

Martinez vs Douglin Round 2

They’re both throwing with serious intentions and tying up in close, then the ref is letting them fight out. Martinez with a right, turns his back, Douglin keeps looking to throw. Good left from Douglin. So far he’s looking the superior puncher in terms of accuracy. There’s a right from Martinez, but wasn’t huge. Or at least didn’t appear to be. Douglin with his goofy balance again.

Martinez is too available to get hit with a left hand from so many angles. Douglin closes the round nicely, and I give it to him again. Martinez is slow as hell, and Douglin isn’t exactly speedy. But I tipped this one to Martinez by a hair.

Martinez 10-9
19-19

Martinez eating a lot of leather so far

Apparently Martinez is “step-nephew” of Ivan Calderon… don’t think he’s even met him haha

Light went out, but nobody got KO’d

“or if the lights start going off and then coming back on”

Brilliant.

Martinez has heavy, but slow, hands

Martinez vs Douglin Round 3

Douglin really nailing him to start this round, but doesn’t appear to be denting Martinez just yet. Martinez taking shots well. Douglin pouring the pressure on a little bit. Saphya Douglin in the corner in the picture in picture. Martinez coming back a bit. Martinez’s facial expressions are a little frustrated, and then the lights go off and come back on after just a moment. Awesome.

Fight is well-matched but these aren’t future standouts, I don’t think. It’s sloppy and Douglin is fighting smart, which means he’s willing to tie up when he needs it, and trade when it works. Teddy suggests Martinez should go to the body, and he’s right. He’s head-hunted all night. Good left from Douglin right before the bell, something that shouldn’t have landed that easily.

Douglin 10-9
Douglin 29-28

<em<Fight is well-matched but these aren’t future standouts, I don’t think.

Said it before I could

Doughin 10-9, 29-28.

This is a fight where both guys are doing well against someone who is clearly capable, which you think would augur well for them, but yet I’m not high on either’s ceiling.

Without meaning to sound like a dick or anything, I’m not seeing much in the future of either guy.

Decent scrap so far.

I may be in the minority, but I don’t see anything worthwhile from Martinez so far…slow, sloppy, bad defense…

yea, he has a ways to go

I nicked the second round to him and I guess he’s landing a few more overall, but the advantage he has in number landed is not comprised of consequential punches.

Martinez vs Douglin Round 4

Douglin with a left. Now they’re up tight with Martinez on the ropes, and Douglin is laying in the shots. Left hands landing. Another left down the pipe later in the round. To me Douglin is landing far more serious shots. Martinez is messy.

Douglin 10-9
Douglin 39-37

Douglin 10-9, 39-37 same.

39-37 Douglin

He’s not bad. Not great, but he’s got some skill. Martinez… is slow. If he has power, he hasn’t shown it.

Is that Douglin’s mom? Is she his trainer?

Fuck, yeah! it is!

kinda weird

I like it. So many fathers, why not a mom?

Momma knows her boxing

martinez's face is starting to look a bit touched up, non?
Love momma Douglin

10-9 Martinez, 48-47 Douglin

Martinez vs Douglin Round 5

God, Martinez is slow. This is my first really good look at him and I’m just not seeing it. He might land a knockout here and make me look stupid, but yeesh.

Douglin’s uppercut has worked when he’s thrown it. Douglin backing up, making Martinez chase, looking to counter him some. But he’s definitely moving backwards and appears to be tiring a bit. Martinez taking this round as Douglin drains a little. Right hand from Martinez. Another right. Two lefts to the body from Martinez, Douglin with a right hook back.

Martinez 10-9
Douglin 48-47

10-9 Douglin, 49-46

Hard to see how Martinez allegedly has more power…punches are too wide.

Douglin 10-9, 58-56 same. Very close round

Martinez vs Douglin Round 6

Martinez stings Douglin with a right, and as the heat turns up, Tessitore and Atlas just keep their narrative about the NY amateur scene. Sigh. Et tu, motherfuckers?

Martinez is doing the chasing. He’s got to land more because I can still imagine him losing these rounds. Left from Douglin as Martinez comes inside. This is a winnable round with 30 seconds left. Right hand Martinez. Wide right doesn’t land. Another right sneaks in. Douglin digs to the body with a right hook and then a left upstairs.

Douglin 10-9
Douglin 58-56

10-9 Martinez, 58-56 Douglin

Martinez flails too much. big round hooks.

Yeah, I don’t like him

I mean, I’d never seen him before, but not impressed

Evening fellas!

Excited for another good season.

10-9, 68-65 Douglin

10-9 Martinez, 67-66 Douglin
Hope it comes down to your score card

Should be fun

Martinez vs Douglin Round 7

both throwing, Martinez gets the better of an exchange. His power appears to be a little overstated by his KO%, too. Martinez hunting now and puts Douglin in the corner, but Douglin fights out with an uppercut and a left hand. Good counter right from Martinez does sting Douglin – he felt that one.

Trading to end the round, and both guys throwing hands. Douglin with a little right before the bell, but not big.

Douglin 10-9
Douglin 68-65

I love it

“What the fuck is that, dude?!”

Douglin looks like a natural righty that was turned around southpaw.

Scary, but I agree with Teddy’s score

Teddy’s score and his commentary are not matching up.

Really?

I think he’s been showing a marked pro-Martinez slant.

yeah, I feel like he's biased by Martinez' blue chip crew

But off the cuff we get the real gut feel

Martinez is tired

they’re both sloppy

he’s eaten a lot of leather

Douglin will win this fight

on account of being in better shape.

And he has been the better fighter

Martinez vs Douglin Round 8

Sloppy final round with both guys trying to do their best to close this thing out, and it’s not…pretty. But they’re fighting, at least, showing the desire to win, and not just standing around like you see too often.

Martinez 10-9
Douglin 77-75

10-9, 78-74 Douglin. Close fight though.

Some close rd’s………think Martinez might get this nod

prolly martinez SD

on pressure

77-75 martinez

Dare i say “tie”?

yea, wouldn’t be surprised at all

10-9 Douglin, 77-75 same

Martinez is bad, and his power didn’t faze douglin. Douglin has some skills, but blocks too many punches with his face.

I didn’t actively score that, but I thought Douglin took the better share.

Pretty good fight. Good match making

I don’t really care who wins so long as the scores aren’t moronic 80-72, 79-73 crap. I’m in no rush to see either of them fight again.

Calling that fight “really good” or whatever sets the bar so low that I understand Kirkland-Angulo being “mind-blowingly great,” I guess.

That first round was pretty awesome

Closely matched, rangy, flawed guys. I thought it was a quality FNF opener.

Varied scores on here so i’m guessing we’ll get varied official scorecards

Honest question

Were there any egregiously bad decisions last year on Friday Night Fights?

Diggin’ the vibe in here tonight…

?

Martinez vs Douglin Scores

77-75 Douglin
77-75 Martinez
77-75 Douglin

Denis Douglin via split decision

Perfectly reasonable scorecards.

Decent scoring

yes

we start off the year with great scorecards

He deserved the win in my eyes

I saw it a bit wider than that, but I think the right guy won

I might be influenced by the fact that all Spanish announcers were calling this a Douglin shutout basically

Pity he's not better

Marketing potential of momma in the corner is pretty good.

Perfectly legit cards

i woulda probably edged it to martinez but those are good cards

Star talent I just don’t see in either one

No, they’re both very mediocre.

Never going to be p4p, but they tried hard and were evenly matched, and the scorecards were good. I’ll take it.

Dear god, that is a repulsive man.

who?

Rafael. No disrespect to him, wrong of me I’m sure, but breathtaking

I dislike him as well

Arum and Pacquiao coward acts of no fighting Mayweather

Is Bernardo Osuna the new host of FNF in English? He’s making an appearance in the Spanish version as well

OMG

Has anyone here ever had 4 scoops of ice cream?

No. And I’m a fat sumbitch.

So the consensus is...

We do not care to see Paquiao fight Marquez for a 4th time?

I’m fine with it. I prefer it to Bradley or Peterson. In part because I know Bradley will be there in November and Pacquiao isn’t going to fight Floyd then either.

4th scoop. LOL. Fucking Atlas

…damn it. Bernardo Osuna is a real nice guy, and I like him, but he is…not…very…good.

Yeah, very plain & boring

He alright. He ain’t doing anything wrong. Nothing great. He’s just there

I’m hoping he’ll settle in and not force it so much. He’s trying too hard.

First time. He’ll get the hang of it.

He’s filled in before and he’s not new to TV. Hard to tell he’s not, though.

:-D

(that means the segment is over)

I know he’s a natural-born Spanish speaker, and so the accent is genuine, but everytime he speaks in English but pronounces Spanish names with a super-strong Spanish accent, I’m like “you fucking show-off.”

“Hey your dad’s fightin’ on ABC, and I just wasn’t interested at the time.” That’s shitty. I was interested when my dad got a new truck.

Yeah that’s pretty bad. “Ay man, your dad just kicked that guys ass” And?

I see no title winning days for Davis

At least Gus Williams won't be on Showtime

Pick one. Osuna or Gus?

Osuna, all day, every day, twice on Sunday.

I will say this, since I never say nice things about Gus: He has improved, and he seems to really be trying to learn the game more and more. He’s not lazy about his job. But I did almost puke when they set up an exchange for him, I think during Ward-Froch, that was like:

Gus: boxing facts!
Al: YOU REALLY KNOW YOUR BOXING, GUS.
Gus: I LOVE BOXING

Yes I remembred that. Al should be ashame of himself

At least Osuna doesn't try to call the fights
What we have all been waiting for
Someone to ACTUALLY punch Atlas?

How can anyone not like Teddy. He makes this show.

He and Joe have a really great rapport.

His wet cardboard soapbox is a bit tiresome sometimes.

Well, being a Deerfield Beach, FL native

I’ve gotta root for Davis. Boca Raton is the town immediately north,

Boca is wear Uncle Junior used to take Roberta until she gossiped about him doing oral sex acts and then he smushed some pie in her face.

I am not denying some scandalous and shady shit happens in that filthy rich community.

what jersey is he wearing

Sam Houston State

Telos Assimanos!

“Lopez has fought the better opposition throughout his career so far.” I strongly disagree. Then Teddy basically…disagrees with himself.

2 punches thrown in the first minute…

They will turn this round in to a new hip hop dance

Davis vs Lopez Round 1

So a minute and a half passes and nobody does fuck all.

Two minutes.

…uhhh.

Hm.

Well.

10-10

YAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAWN

What a first round that turned out to be

Sucky first round… 9-9 =P

Lopez 10-9. Blurgh

10-10

I landed as many punches that rounds as they did combined.

I’m surprised. I remember Lopez giving Pavlik a good fight… what the hell is this shit?

That’s enough of this. Can’t see it geting any better. I’m out

There’s a ShoBox in 43 minutes

I know. Gonna get something to eat and be back for that

Can’t blame you. This is absurd.

Better turn to Arkansas-K State
Davis vs Lopez Round 2

Right to the body from Davis! HOT DAMN IT’S A WAR

Now some wrestling.

Then some more.

“I’m tempted to have given that first round to the referee,” says Teddy.

This one isn’t much better. Lots of grappling.

Ohhhh, fuck. This sucks. This is heinous.

20-20

10-9 Davis. 19-19

10-10 again, 20-20

This is like zen. Fight by not fighting.

Regular Willie Pep, these guys are

How cute

Love taps

Davis vs Lopez Round 3

Alright there might be some fighting this round! Davis is coming out throwing these PUNCH THINGS. Lopez throwing! and then ties up.

Fuck these are some grabby sons of bitches.

Davis letting his hands go, not landing clean, but anything looks good right now.

More grabbing. Lopez moving back. Davis has gone to Sergio Mora school, feinting his ASS off.

Oh God, if this keeps up…

Lopez right hand is blocked.

Davis 10-9
Davis 30-29

right

predictions for total punch stats after these 10 horrible rounds have expired?

this is making Bellew-McKenzie II look thrilling

There was punches in that fight

10-9, 29-28 Davis.

10-9 Davis, 30-29

It’s like two people playing a fight night game, except both their punch buttons are broken.

That was weird, Davis hit Lopez flush, and Davis ran for his life

that was the single best moment of the fight… but back to wrestling now

The instinct to survive. The instinct to survive what exactly?

My instinct to survive has me reading a book. The fight’s on, but I’m reading.

Hey does anybody know when this fight starts?

someone from the audience is bound to start some shit up

Davis vs Lopez Round 4

Oh, Lopez stinks. This is horrible. That Kelly Pavlik carried this grab-em-up slug to a watchable fight speaks incredibly well of Kelly Pavlik right now. Davis hit him early in the round and then ran away. This is bizarre. Davis flicking a jab here and there.

We’re 0-for-4 in fighters that I have an active desire to see back on TV at this point. Lopez almost punches!

Davis 10-9
Davis 40-38

Yeah, dissapointing start to the season. Too bad

At least the other two really tried. And actually punched each other, however flawed the punches.

Davis 10-9, 39-38

Saul remains my favorite part of FNF

My score is…..zzzzzzzzzzzzz

I’m not gonna do play-by-play for the rest of this. I’ll just score it and crap. typing is not needed.

scores may not be needed either :)

thank god shobox is next

And I’m turning it off… let me know if someone pulls a Mayweather/Ortiz or something

I was enjoying those wacky tales from Alexander Povetkin’s training camp.
It was a welcome distraction from the fight

“Let’s take some time to kiss Teddy’s ass over the Povetkin myth.”

“title” defense……..yea, ok

Ref was a little late on that Boswell stoppage

I can’t even score this. This is like trying to score a different sport. I can’t judge ice skating either.

well, ice skaters are definitely more graceful than this sloppy crap

Dannie Williams....

Would love to see him after this, but there won’t be enough time. Sour way to end the night (on ESPN 2 FNF) after a good first fight. Luckily, ShoBox is next.

Dannie already fought. J’Leon Love was supposed to be the swing. do you want results?

Nah,

It’s cool just checked it out.

Not sure what's worse

This fight or the Kilgore College Rangerettes

Dyah Davis is winning this fight, but it’s about as unimpressive as possible.

“I didn’t think he lost via majority decision, i thought he lost unanimously.” Wow. This man is a professional analyst.

In the Fight Night games, he’ll say the same thing. “I didn’t think it was a unanimous decision, more of s split decision, but the right guy one.” Scoring doesn’t work that way.

Ok. I’m done. Happy New Year FNF

Screw it, I’m gonna watch the end of Two Towers instead. Go skinny Ent!

“HOW YOU LIKE THAT, MISTA HITLA?”

Nooooooooooooo

That cannot be a real movie.

Oh no, now someone else is gonna say “Fight Freaks” all the time. Osuna’s tagging on that.

“Neither one of them have thrown more punches than West Virginia has scored points”

Great line. However, I am skeptical if Atlas is writing these or being fed them through the wire.

“They’ve got it all here ringside,” says Joe, by which he means popcorn.

Teddy continues to argue with himself. He says Lopez has the better record (he doesn’t) and that Lopez only wins at home.

Oh my God. Alfonso Lopez lands a big punch and a woman in the crowd is so stunned she screams like Jason Voorhees is coming at her.

There wasn’t a worse fight than this in the whole of last year – UK/US/Germany/anywhere else where they have boxing rings.

I saw some horrible fights, but I’m inclined to agree. Bellew-McKenzie II and Bute-Johnson were up there off the top of my head, and they were better than this crap.

don’t think we’ll be seeing these guys on FNF again

It is amazing

How they keep promoting the bowl games.

These fighters should be ashamed
They won't do playoffs because it supposedly makes the season too long

Yet they’ve now pushed out the last bowl game nearly two weeks later than pre-BCS.

Good news is FNF can only go up from here.

I usually get annoyed when they don’t call the fight, but please, for the love of God, keep talking LSU-Alabama.

I want to see Honey Badger fight!

To be fair, it has picked up a bit (a bit) in the last few rounds.

Ref yells “Box!”, crowd responds “Yes, please!”

At least they have Duval Street in their near future.

Judging by the fact they didn’t throw shit in the ring or boo endlessly, they had it in their recent past too.

The official ESPN shop should start selling

“I survived the Dyah Davis vs. Alfonso Lopez fight of 2012” T-shirts.

Please give us three 100-100 (or 90-90) cards.

So I assume everyone is out on this one?

Just waiting for the dec………….wanna see if my “I have no frigging idea who will win” BLH pick works out

Right, I will call it a night. It’s getting early.
Enjoy Showbox everyone. It’s a guaranteed improvement at least.

Davis vs Lopez Scores

100-90
100-90
99-91

Dyah Davis by unanimous decision

at least 2 of the judges were able to split them in the first round. I will leave you on that note.
