Dyah Davis meets Alfonso Lopez in the main event of tonight's Friday Night Fights on ESPN2 and ESPN3.
Tonight at 9 p.m. EST on ESPN2 and ESPN3, Friday Night Fights returns to the airwaves from Key West, with a 10-round super middleweight main event.
In the main event, second generation fighter Dyah Davis (20-2-1, 9 KO) meets Alfonso Lopez (22-1, 17 KO) in another well-matched fight that hopefully will pick up where the excellent FNF season of 2011 left off. This morning we previewed the card, and I'm hoping this is the good Dyah Davis tonight. As Brick said in the comments, Davis can be a little inconsistent. Lopez, meanwhile, has just one really significant fight on his record, a May 2011 majority decision loss to Kelly Pavlik, which was closer than almost anyone expected it would be going in.
In the co-feature, a pair of prospects do battle at 154 pounds, as Steve Martinez (11-0, 9 KO) faces Denis Douglin (13-1, 8 KO). Neither are big-time blue chippers, but Martinez has some promise, and Douglin is looking to get himself righted after an upset loss in early 2010.
Following Friday Night Fights we'll move immediately to tonight's ShoBox double-header, in a separate post, which will start at 11 p.m. EST, so get ready for a good night of fights as we get the live coverage of 2012 kicked off in style.

I just discovered I have ESPN Deportes and I can watch “Golpe a Golpe” before watching FNF! Awesome!

I like this host much better than Coach. Is he a college bball guy or something now?
Tysox88 - January 6, 2012 via mobile
I think Coach is just a SportsCenter guy. He doesn’t specialize in anything and is just a reader of stuff.
Scott Christ - January 6, 2012
He used to be very good as a straight man for the Rock.
Verklemptomaniac - January 6, 2012
Fuck the Rock. I preferred Coach’s work with Tajiri.
Scott Christ - January 6, 2012
I haven’t watched wrasslin’ regularly since all the Benoit crap, but I still have fond memories of Tajiri from ECW and his run in WWE.
Verklemptomaniac - January 6, 2012
Tajiri vs Taz on ECW on TNN in August ’99 is one of my favorite ECW matches. It was short but so well-executed; it was like they packed 15 minutes into six or whatever it was.

Martinez vs Douglin Round 1
Within 20 seconds, I’m already worried about Douglin being wide open for a right hand down the pipe if Martinez can throw one. Teddy psychin’ me out, man. Both throwing, neither landing crisp to start. Both look a little tight early. No idea what the weather is out there. I’ll look it up between rounds.
Left hand from Douglin lands with about a minute left. Martinez spins out of the corner. Right hook from Douglin, then he slips and falls down. That’s twice he’s slipped. His footwork looks horrendous. He’s all off balance and he comes in very slowly. I actually think he’s right there to win the round, and I’m probably going to give it to him here, but he’s goofy as hell so far. Both crack at the bell, but it’s time for Alive 2 or whatever.
Douglin 10-9
Scott Christ - January 6, 2012
Douglin 10-9.
schraubd - January 6, 2012
61 and clear in Key West, so that’s pretty damn mild.
Scott Christ - January 6, 2012
nice rt…………Douglin looked hurt for a second
DPlainview - January 6, 2012
I agree with Teddy’s prediction (Douglin will be doing pretty well until he’s caught by a big shot).
schraubd - January 6, 2012
Douglin is lucky he is so much faster. Martinez’s reach may catch up to him.
kelsquire - January 6, 2012
Martinez 10-9, 19-19. Good fight.

Yea, even matched
DPlainview - January 6, 2012
Douglin style of fighting reminds me of former Olympian Dante Craig.

Martinez vs Douglin Round 2
They’re both throwing with serious intentions and tying up in close, then the ref is letting them fight out. Martinez with a right, turns his back, Douglin keeps looking to throw. Good left from Douglin. So far he’s looking the superior puncher in terms of accuracy. There’s a right from Martinez, but wasn’t huge. Or at least didn’t appear to be. Douglin with his goofy balance again.
Martinez is too available to get hit with a left hand from so many angles. Douglin closes the round nicely, and I give it to him again. Martinez is slow as hell, and Douglin isn’t exactly speedy. But I tipped this one to Martinez by a hair.
Martinez 10-9
19-19

Martinez vs Douglin Round 3
Douglin really nailing him to start this round, but doesn’t appear to be denting Martinez just yet. Martinez taking shots well. Douglin pouring the pressure on a little bit. Saphya Douglin in the corner in the picture in picture. Martinez coming back a bit. Martinez’s facial expressions are a little frustrated, and then the lights go off and come back on after just a moment. Awesome.
Fight is well-matched but these aren’t future standouts, I don’t think. It’s sloppy and Douglin is fighting smart, which means he’s willing to tie up when he needs it, and trade when it works. Teddy suggests Martinez should go to the body, and he’s right. He’s head-hunted all night. Good left from Douglin right before the bell, something that shouldn’t have landed that easily.
Douglin 10-9
Douglin 29-28

I may be in the minority, but I don’t see anything worthwhile from Martinez so far…slow, sloppy, bad defense…
Apprentice - January 6, 2012
yea, he has a ways to go
DPlainview - January 6, 2012
I nicked the second round to him and I guess he’s landing a few more overall, but the advantage he has in number landed is not comprised of consequential punches.
Scott Christ - January 6, 2012
Martinez vs Douglin Round 4
Douglin with a left. Now they’re up tight with Martinez on the ropes, and Douglin is laying in the shots. Left hands landing. Another left down the pipe later in the round. To me Douglin is landing far more serious shots. Martinez is messy.
Douglin 10-9
Douglin 39-37

Douglin 10-9, 39-37 same.

Martinez vs Douglin Round 5
God, Martinez is slow. This is my first really good look at him and I’m just not seeing it. He might land a knockout here and make me look stupid, but yeesh.
Douglin’s uppercut has worked when he’s thrown it. Douglin backing up, making Martinez chase, looking to counter him some. But he’s definitely moving backwards and appears to be tiring a bit. Martinez taking this round as Douglin drains a little. Right hand from Martinez. Another right. Two lefts to the body from Martinez, Douglin with a right hook back.
Martinez 10-9
Douglin 48-47
Scott Christ - January 6, 2012
10-9 Douglin, 49-46
Verklemptomaniac - January 6, 2012

Martinez vs Douglin Round 6
Martinez stings Douglin with a right, and as the heat turns up, Tessitore and Atlas just keep their narrative about the NY amateur scene. Sigh. Et tu, motherfuckers?
Martinez is doing the chasing. He’s got to land more because I can still imagine him losing these rounds. Left from Douglin as Martinez comes inside. This is a winnable round with 30 seconds left. Right hand Martinez. Wide right doesn’t land. Another right sneaks in. Douglin digs to the body with a right hook and then a left upstairs.
Douglin 10-9
Douglin 58-56

10-9 Martinez, 58-56 Douglin

Martinez vs Douglin Round 7
both throwing, Martinez gets the better of an exchange. His power appears to be a little overstated by his KO%, too. Martinez hunting now and puts Douglin in the corner, but Douglin fights out with an uppercut and a left hand. Good counter right from Martinez does sting Douglin – he felt that one.
Trading to end the round, and both guys throwing hands. Douglin with a little right before the bell, but not big.
Douglin 10-9
Douglin 68-65
Scott Christ - January 6, 2012

Sloppy final round with both guys trying to do their best to close this thing out, and it’s not…pretty. But they’re fighting, at least, showing the desire to win, and not just standing around like you see too often.

Martinez is bad, and his power didn’t faze douglin. Douglin has some skills, but blocks too many punches with his face.
Verklemptomaniac - January 6, 2012
I didn’t actively score that, but I thought Douglin took the better share.
Pretty good fight. Good match making
Duan - January 6, 2012
I don’t really care who wins so long as the scores aren’t moronic 80-72, 79-73 crap. I’m in no rush to see either of them fight again.

More grabbing. Lopez moving back. Davis has gone to Sergio Mora school, feinting his ASS off.
Oh God, if this keeps up…
Lopez right hand is blocked.
Davis 10-9
Davis 30-29
Scott Christ - January 6, 2012
right
predictions for total punch stats after these 10 horrible rounds have expired?
Duan - January 6, 2012
this is making Bellew-McKenzie II look thrilling
Scott Christ - January 6, 2012
There was punches in that fight
Duan - January 6, 2012
10-9, 29-28 Davis.
schraubd - January 6, 2012
10-9 Davis, 30-29
It’s like two people playing a fight night game, except both their punch buttons are broken.
Verklemptomaniac - January 6, 2012
zzz
schraubd - January 6, 2012
That was weird, Davis hit Lopez flush, and Davis ran for his life
Apprentice - January 6, 2012
that was the single best moment of the fight… but back to wrestling now
Apprentice - January 6, 2012
The instinct to survive. The instinct to survive what exactly?
schraubd - January 6, 2012
My instinct to survive has me reading a book. The fight’s on, but I’m reading.
BoxAnne - January 6, 2012
Hey does anybody know when this fight starts?
tacklerford - January 6, 2012
someone from the audience is bound to start some shit up
Apprentice - January 6, 2012
Davis vs Lopez Round 4
Oh, Lopez stinks. This is horrible. That Kelly Pavlik carried this grab-em-up slug to a watchable fight speaks incredibly well of Kelly Pavlik right now. Davis hit him early in the round and then ran away. This is bizarre. Davis flicking a jab here and there.
We’re 0-for-4 in fighters that I have an active desire to see back on TV at this point. Lopez almost punches!
Davis 10-9
Davis 40-38
Scott Christ - January 6, 2012
Yeah, dissapointing start to the season. Too bad
Apprentice - January 6, 2012
At least the other two really tried. And actually punched each other, however flawed the punches.
BoxAnne - January 6, 2012
Davis 10-9, 39-38
schraubd - January 6, 2012
Saul remains my favorite part of FNF
schraubd - January 6, 2012
My score is…..zzzzzzzzzzzzz
tacklerford - January 6, 2012
I’m not gonna do play-by-play for the rest of this. I’ll just score it and crap. typing is not needed.
Scott Christ - January 6, 2012
scores may not be needed either :)
Apprentice - January 6, 2012
wise choice…
tacklerford - January 6, 2012
thank god shobox is next
el javi - January 6, 2012 via Android app
And I’m turning it off… let me know if someone pulls a Mayweather/Ortiz or something
Apprentice - January 6, 2012
I was enjoying those wacky tales from Alexander Povetkin’s training camp.
It was a welcome distraction from the fight
Duan - January 6, 2012
“Let’s take some time to kiss Teddy’s ass over the Povetkin myth.”
Scott Christ - January 6, 2012
“title” defense……..yea, ok
DPlainview - January 6, 2012
Ref was a little late on that Boswell stoppage
Tysox88 - January 6, 2012 via mobile
I can’t even score this. This is like trying to score a different sport. I can’t judge ice skating either.
Scott Christ - January 6, 2012
well, ice skaters are definitely more graceful than this sloppy crap
Apprentice - January 6, 2012
Dannie Williams....
Would love to see him after this, but there won’t be enough time. Sour way to end the night (on ESPN 2 FNF) after a good first fight. Luckily, ShoBox is next.
TheDemolitionDan - January 6, 2012 via iPhone app
Dannie already fought. J’Leon Love was supposed to be the swing. do you want results?
Scott Christ - January 6, 2012
Nah,
It’s cool just checked it out.
TheDemolitionDan - January 6, 2012 via iPhone app
Not sure what's worse
This fight or the Kilgore College Rangerettes
Brickhaus - January 6, 2012
Dyah Davis is winning this fight, but it’s about as unimpressive as possible.
Scott Christ - January 6, 2012
“I didn’t think he lost via majority decision, i thought he lost unanimously.” Wow. This man is a professional analyst.
Scott Christ - January 6, 2012
In the Fight Night games, he’ll say the same thing. “I didn’t think it was a unanimous decision, more of s split decision, but the right guy one.” Scoring doesn’t work that way.
schraubd - January 6, 2012
Ok. I’m done. Happy New Year FNF
tacklerford - January 6, 2012
Screw it, I’m gonna watch the end of Two Towers instead. Go skinny Ent!
Verklemptomaniac - January 6, 2012
“HOW YOU LIKE THAT, MISTA HITLA?”
Nooooooooooooo
That cannot be a real movie.
Scott Christ - January 6, 2012
Oh no, now someone else is gonna say “Fight Freaks” all the time. Osuna’s tagging on that.
Scott Christ - January 6, 2012
“Neither one of them have thrown more punches than West Virginia has scored points”
Great line. However, I am skeptical if Atlas is writing these or being fed them through the wire.
kelsquire - January 6, 2012
“They’ve got it all here ringside,” says Joe, by which he means popcorn.
Scott Christ - January 6, 2012
Teddy continues to argue with himself. He says Lopez has the better record (he doesn’t) and that Lopez only wins at home.
Scott Christ - January 6, 2012
Oh my God. Alfonso Lopez lands a big punch and a woman in the crowd is so stunned she screams like Jason Voorhees is coming at her.
Scott Christ - January 6, 2012
There wasn’t a worse fight than this in the whole of last year – UK/US/Germany/anywhere else where they have boxing rings.
Duan - January 6, 2012
I saw some horrible fights, but I’m inclined to agree. Bellew-McKenzie II and Bute-Johnson were up there off the top of my head, and they were better than this crap.
Scott Christ - January 6, 2012
don’t think we’ll be seeing these guys on FNF again
DPlainview - January 6, 2012
It is amazing
How they keep promoting the bowl games.
kelsquire - January 6, 2012
These fighters should be ashamed
kelsquire - January 6, 2012
They won't do playoffs because it supposedly makes the season too long
Yet they’ve now pushed out the last bowl game nearly two weeks later than pre-BCS.
Brickhaus - January 6, 2012
Good news is FNF can only go up from here.
Scott Christ - January 6, 2012
Yep
kelsquire - January 6, 2012
I usually get annoyed when they don’t call the fight, but please, for the love of God, keep talking LSU-Alabama.
Scott Christ - January 6, 2012
I want to see Honey Badger fight!
kelsquire - January 6, 2012
To be fair, it has picked up a bit (a bit) in the last few rounds.
schraubd - January 6, 2012
Ref yells “Box!”, crowd responds “Yes, please!”
Verklemptomaniac - January 6, 2012
At least they have Duval Street in their near future.
kelsquire - January 6, 2012
Judging by the fact they didn’t throw shit in the ring or boo endlessly, they had it in their recent past too.
Scott Christ - January 6, 2012
The official ESPN shop should start selling
“I survived the Dyah Davis vs. Alfonso Lopez fight of 2012” T-shirts.
Please give us three 100-100 (or 90-90) cards.
parlagi - January 6, 2012
So I assume everyone is out on this one?
kelsquire - January 6, 2012
Just waiting for the dec………….wanna see if my “I have no frigging idea who will win” BLH pick works out
DPlainview - January 6, 2012
Right, I will call it a night. It’s getting early.
Enjoy Showbox everyone. It’s a guaranteed improvement at least.
Duan - January 6, 2012
Davis vs Lopez Scores
100-90
100-90
99-91
Dyah Davis by unanimous decision
Scott Christ - January 6, 2012
at least 2 of the judges were able to split them in the first round. I will leave you on that note.
Duan - January 6, 2012
awesome
DPlainview - January 6, 2012
