Three years after his last fight, Winky Wright might be back on the Mayweather vs Cotto undercard. (Photo by Ethan Miller/Getty Images)
Golden Boy Promotions has listened to the fans, and what they've apparently heard is, "Hey, do you think we could have an old timers' night? Just for fun?"
In addition to 40-year-old Shane Mosley being booked in a lousy fight against WBC junior middleweight titlist Canelo Alvarez despite being 0-2-1 in his last three fights, BoxingScene.com reports that Winky Wright, another 40-year-old fighter, is possible for the Mayweather vs Cotto undercard in a middleweight bout against Peter Quillin.
Wright (51-5-1, 25 KO) hasn't fought since July 2009, when he was shut out by Paul Williams on HBO, and that is his only fight since 2007. It has been nearly half a decade since Wright was a relevant factor in the boxing world, and he hasn't won since his December 2006 victory over Ike Quartey, who never fought again. (Or at least hasn't yet, as Golden Boy might look him up for the PPV opener at this rate.)

Wright was originally booked to face Matthew Macklin on last April's "Action Heroes" show, but pulled out of that fight with a hand injury in training. A few months later, he talked about returning in November or December, but he didn't, same as he didn't return in November or December the previous year, either.
Quillin (26-0, 20 KO) is a pretty good middleweight prospect who's looking to get his career rolling after some injury setbacks stunted what should have been his true development years. At 28, he knows he's getting a bit old to continue being a "prospect," but Golden Boy doesn't really have any middleweights for him to fight, and that's where Wright probably comes in.
That and they might still suspect that there actually is name value left in Wright. I have my doubts that there's name value left in Shane Mosley; I have no doubt that there's no true name value left in Winky Wright, who is effectively retired at this point and was never some big star in the first place.
This is turning into just the damnedest show.

Just the big names
Only the big names.
pakinpower - February 10, 2012
I feel like this is some sort of prank.

Like at Halloween?

How was I exaggerating? This is a poverty “starring” one of boxing’s biggest stars, land the only fights that are being talked about for the undercard involve completely shot veterans. The main event sucks too. Cotto has zero chance against mayweather.

Just like Buster Douglas had with Tyson. …..
Zfan - February 11, 2012
Pile it high
And pile it deep.
pakinpower - February 10, 2012
Maybe they can round off this fresh card with the hotly anticipated Oscar-Ricky fight at the heavyweight limit.
bachwards - February 10, 2012
I think the one that answered “yes” on the poll was Scott just testing if that thing worked.

haha

lmao

Winky is still a hard person to beat no matter what, b/c he has that solid defense… but I think he shot himself in the foot… turning down a second fight with Jermaine Taylor for the Middleweight crown b/c of the 60/40 split, and then not fighting for two years after the Bhop fight (which he didn’t look too bad) and then another two years with Williams, and another 3 YEARS since that when he said he wasn’t finished. He was calling out Sergio Martinez a year ago. WTF is going on? I WAS a big Winky fan, but I guess “his ego is writing checks his body can’t cash” or something…
cylee1180 - February 10, 2012
caveman
Winky is like ….50 years old ! lol
Why not bring in EVANDER. Or maybe Big George himself.
Roy?……….. Roy?
pakinpower - February 10, 2012
He was not hard to beat in his last fight. Almost three years ago.
Scott Christ - February 10, 2012
True, but his last fight was a prime Paul Williams
Zfan - February 10, 2012
let's be honest now
prime paul williams wasn’t all that special, but still winky is just too old and this fight will be a complete bore for all 12 rounds. then follow that up with the pathetic canelo-mosley fight and you’ll be in a coma before the complete mismatch of a main event even begins.
battle axe of doom - February 10, 2012
Hindsight is always 20/20. Its very easy to say that NOW, after his last two fights. But at that time he was a very good fighter.
Zfan - February 10, 2012
I still wouldn't have him on a PPV undercard though
Zfan - February 10, 2012
I think the logic in this card is to make Cotto look fresh by comparison to his brothers from the crypt, Shane and Winky.
After watching the undercard, all Miguel has to do is launch punches for a few rounds and the crown will go wild.
Winky is damn near retired or should be.
Shane is just tired. And should be.
Cotto is about to be.
pakinpower - February 11, 2012
Ha! I just said the same thing a few minutes ago on Twitter, kinda. Wondering if Floyd (35) was worried that he and Cotto (aged 31) will look a little creaky, so he wanted to soften the camera’s focus, so to speak.
Scott Christ - February 11, 2012
Could name the card
THIS IS OLD SCHOOL!!
pakinpower - February 11, 2012
They should just get it over with and have Mosley-Wright III. You know they want to.
Kory Kitchen - February 11, 2012
You know, if they just want big names, why restrict themselves to boxers? I say we add some spice and make some fights everybody in the world can get excited about:
Beibut Shumenov – Howard Stern
Marcos Maidana – Justin Bieber (fight cannot be stopped, has to go the whole 12 rounds)
David Tua – Kim Kardashian – one punch only match
Denis Lebedev – George W Bush (or any other politician in Lebedev’s preferred age group)
and of course the
Tavoris Cloud – Paris Hilton grudge match
I would also imagine Vitali Klitschko would LOVE a shot at Vladimir Putin, but I imagine Putin would ask for too much money and future options, so that fight would be a bitch to make, at least on this particular PPV.
Radu - February 11, 2012
This one really got me — the “preferred age group” dig.
Scott Christ - February 11, 2012
Great list
How about:
Roy Jones vs Kanye West (Roy loves country music and Taylor Swift)
Jay-Z vs Chris Brown
Evander vs Mike Tyson (Gold teeth and grills not allowed)
pakinpower - February 11, 2012
Very funny. Gold star for you.
DrRck - February 11, 2012
what a strange card they're building
i’m intrigued
nickfoxx - February 11, 2012
WHO GETS OFF LAST.
Come one. Come all.
See the biggest names in boxing try to do what their minds think but their bodies can no longer do. See the spectacle of old age before your very eyes. See it live. No need to tape or replay.
What you see is what you get. Instant replay no necessary. Your eyes wont lie.
You can see the punches BEFORE they are thrown.
pakinpower - February 11, 2012
I’m thrilled with this card. It’s saving me $60, which is a good thing for me. No way can I be tempted now.
BoxAnne - February 11, 2012
I dunno, I want to see if they book another faded champion, who was last good in 2008, into another absurd mismatch. Come on Golden Boy, you can do it: Robert Guerrero v Juan Diaz at 147!
Eoin_not_ian - February 11, 2012
Winky is prolly walking around 200 or 210…. he really isn’t a boxer anymore.
Zocalo - February 11, 2012
Well, Im still buying the card
I mean, how often do PPV’S get bought for undercards? People in bars and casinos dont even start paying attention until the main event. Most of the time theres music playing loudly and people having fun talking with each other. They dont get serious until the main event anyway.
Who fought on the Tyson-Lewis undercard?
Hopkins-Trinidad undercard?
Bowe-Holyfield 1, 2, or 3 undercard?
Whitaker-Chavez undercard?
If Martinez fights Chavez Jr, are people gonna say :No I’m watching because the undercard sucks???
No. Boxing has never been about undercards. Its about the main event.
Zfan - February 11, 2012
The point I’m making above is that you would never turn down watching those fights because of the undercard sucked
Zfan - February 11, 2012
Pacquaio was on the Tyson-Lewis undercard! It’s because of him that fight sold so well!
Kory Kitchen - February 11, 2012
haha
