Alexander vs Maidana: Official Fight Poster

Here's the poster for the February 25 HBO doubleheader featuring the welterweight main event between Devon Alexander and Marcos Maidana, live from (where else?) St. Louis.

Alexander (22-1, 13 KO) and Maidana (31-2, 28 KO) are both moving up from 140 pounds for this fight, hoping to get into the mix at 147. This will be Alexander's first fight under the Golden Boy banner, since leaving Don King last September.

Star-divide

Is it just me or is this fight totally lacking zest on paper, at least for a well-matched HBO main event? This fight is two weeks away and nobody is talking about it at all. Maidana is a boxing fan's type of fighter, but Alexander's stock has really, really dropped over his last three fights. First there was the highly debatable decision win (in St. Louis) over Andriy Kotelnik, then the flop against Timothy Bradley, and then last year, another hometown decision against Lucas Matthysse.

If you're wondering why Maidana is going to St. Louis, it's very simple: The only place in the States this fight will draw as a main event is St. Louis. Maidana will be gunning for the knockout and doesn't come to win decisions anyway, so I have my doubts that he's all that concerned with the officiating.

The co-feature between Adrien Broner and Eloy Perez for Broner's 130-pound paper belt is actually the more interesting fight, in my opinion. Broner, 22, has gotten a lot of hype in the last year, but he wasn't so great against Daniel Ponce De Leon, and his next two fights were against mediocre, very safe opponents. Perez (23-0-2, 7 KO) isn't held in the same regard as a potential star that Broner is, but he's a good fighter and I keep having the nagging feeling that Broner is more sizzle than steak. I'm interested to find out what he'll do with Perez, who is better than Jason Litzau or Martin Rodriguez.

I’m somewhat interested in how both these guys look going up to welterweight, otherwise I’m not too thrilled to see Alexander’s volume style again.

I'm not a huge Alexander fan

But I like that the guy is willing to fight stiff competition (even if he gets gift decisions based on location) and not just fight pushovers all the time.

That said, please knock him the F out, Marcos.

I agree this fight seems to have zero buzz. Nobody really cares for Alexander much anymore except maybe Dan Rafael. I could see this fight being very similar to his fight with Matthysse where Alexander is awarded the close rounds and survives a few rough spots tp win an unpoular decision.

Is it 10 rounds or 12 rounds this time?

He got a gift against Matthysse over 10 rounds, it would have been even more egregious if it had been a 12 rounder, as Matthysse was in control.

Sky Sports advertised it as 10 rounds today. Which plainly sucks.

At least it’s not a 10-round eliminator like the Matthysse fight.

I’ve seen this fight listed as 10 and 12 rounds, btw. No idea. The Matthysse fight being 10 was a surprise when it was on TV.

Well, we'll see if Maidana's power carries up

Many a power puncher’s does not.

I wonder if the extra 7 pounds will allow Alexander to actually land a jab

I just hope the 7 pounds will make him stop yelling when he throws a jab.

Alexander sucks. He makes more noise than he lands punches. All show, no go.

That noise he makes would imply he’d be great at women’s tennis though…

I prefer the grunt of a lithe woman myself Chris

really looking forward to this one actually.

i still like alexander, though i had him losing to kotelnik and matthyse as well. not sure whether he’s any good but i kinda like him for some reason. i think he’s got a decent chance to legitimately beat maidana here. i love maidana but he’s not as tight as matthyse; i don’t think he’ll land as much. and say what you want about alexander but he showed some heart late in the matthyse fight, when he got hurt in rd 8 but hung in there and even took the next rd clearly IIRC. so i don’t think maidana’s gonna get him outta there easily at all.

very intrigued by the broner fight too. i kinda think broner’s gonna be the truth and thought perez was less than the sum of his parts until pretty recently, so can’t wait to see how this one goes.

this is actually the first tv card of 2012 i’m pretty excited about. would even drive down for it if i didn’t have some other shit going on that day.

The fight being in St-Louis is a major disappointment for me, still knowing it’s the place where they can make more $$$. Maidana is gonna have to close the show to win.

Maidana is there to chingar Alexander… He isn’t going to try and get a decision Hell… If Alexander is still standing while getting rocked and socked all night long.. He will be default still get the unanimous 118-100 score cards.

Does Anyone

know where to bet online in the States? (Legally)
because eloy is a 5 to 6 point underdog in this one and i feel like he might just pull it out.
and it sort of seems like the hype recieved for a friday night fights card.

Bodog?

I think they changed their name, but that’s where I usually do any of my (limited) sports wagering.

5dimes I think is the best probably. But I just drive to a casino…

yes bodog changed their site name, but both only had the maidana-alexander clash, and ok ill try out a casino. thanks guys.
