Alvarez vs Mosley: Shane Mosley Says He'll Be 100% For May 5 Fight

Shane Mosley says that he'll come to his fight against Canelo Alvarez at 100%, indicating, I guess, that he wasn't at 100% against Floyd Mayweather Jr, Sergio Mora, and Manny Pacquiao in his last three outings. From BoxingScene.com:

"The biggest disadvantage Canelo has is that he's fighting me at 100%, not at 70%. He's going to be lacking a lot of different things in that fight and that’s going to be a big disadvantage when he fights me. I'm more hungry and I really want to prove [something]," Mosley said.

A lot of my rage over this fight has died off and has turned itself into genuine sadness, because to me this is a once-great fighter promising what I am 99% certain he cannot deliver.

Star-divide

100% of Shane Mosley in 2012 is...well, it's about 70% of prime Shane Mosley, at best, maybe less given his distaste for contact in the Mayweather and Pacquiao fights. Again, it's not that he lost to those guys. As I said before, it's the manner in which he lost. He was befuddled by both and made to look at times like a guy who just didn't belong in the ring anymore.

In both fights, there were moments where Mosley seemed almost offended or, I don't know, saddened by the fact that they kept hitting him and trying to hit him, and ultimately dominating him physically. All the glove tapping and requests for respect came off in a way as a request for them to actually respect him, and stop so easily beating him. (I'm not saying that he literally felt that way, or thought he felt that way.)

If the boxing ring is home to a fighter, the boxing landlords are doing their best to evict Mosley, but he just keeps coming up with the rent at the last second.

No, he won’t. His only hope, and the worst possible outcome, is if he beats Alvarez on pure craftiness and whatever power he has left.

oh lord

100% of nothing is still zero, Shane.

Mosley speaks the truth.

When he fought Margarito, he was at 100%. When he fought Floyd, he was at 65%, When he fought Manny, he was at 70%. As a matter of fact. Every single loss he has had is because he was at 70% or below. How does he know this? He has a special machine he steps into before every fight and it reveals to him the percentage he is currently at before the fight. I’m not lying. Hand on the bible.

Really?

I remember when JMM went into that machine that checked his oxygen levels and everything. I wonder if it’s a similar thing. Wow technology is great today.

I can’t wait for Jim Lampley to start announcing these percentages at the end of each round, LOL.

BTW, better number-related question: does Mosley throw more or less than 30 punches per round?

No more than 10 per round

Do they count the glove taps as thrown punches? I mean his arm does extend out. In that case I would take the over.

According to compubox, pre Mayorga, Mosley threw on average 55 punches per round. In the stretch from Mayorga to Pacquiao (where his only good fight was against Margarito) he averaged 40 punches per round, with the Margarito fight being the only one where he averaged more than 45 punches per round (56). If you get rid of that good fight, his punch output drops even further to 35 punches per round on average (it was 28 against Pacquiao, his lowest so far). To make matters worse not only does he throw less now, he also connects less, he’s dropped from connecting 34% of his punches to connecting just 29% (24% if you look at his last 3 fights).

Right. My over-under was definitely somewhat calculated. I think there’s a distinct possibility that he throws less than 30 per round. The only mitigating factor is that Canelo is not exactly an all-action, come-forward and engage all the time kind of fighter so maybe Mosley won’t shell up as much as he did with Pacquiao.

Then again, maybe he will.

^ this man gets it
Whoops. The man above, the man above me gets it

I’m looking forward to him getting 100% KTFO. Shane, it’s over man. Let it go.

He very well may be 100%. But of what, exactly?

(Which is to say that even Scott’s estimate of 70% seems a tad high to me.)

Can Canelo knock Mosley out??? That’s the only interesting question presented by this matchup. Frankly I’m coming around to it, considering it’s Cinco de Mayo I’ll probably be pretty drunk by the time this one comes up anyway.

The only good thing about this fight is that somebody will interview Nazim Richardson and he will deliver two or three awesome quotes.

I don’t think Naazim can have awesome quotes about Shane Mosley anymore, since they’re all either lies or sad delusions.

I was thinking more about quotes about Alvarez. I kind of written off anything interesting or true about Mosley, other than ’he’s a nice guy and this is probably his last shot’.

someone recently suggested Naazim could this time tell Shane to “swim without getting out of the therapy pool”

I don't get it.

Naazim always used to tell Shane to “swim without getting wet.” Which, when translated to English, means “Blurgle-flurgle-blah-blah.”

Ahhh... in which case that's really funny.

:)

100%

At this point in time makes no difference. His skill set has diminished, no speed, gun shy and he never faired well with a sound boxer. Mosely was a slugger in his prime, he loved the exchange and most of his losses were to technically sound boxers w/ good defense/stiff jab. A knockout by Canelo would be a service. I really hate saying that because Shane was one of my favorite fighters.

140%

This is a lose-lose for Canelo: if he wins by UD everyone will fire at him, if he KO then everyone will say its the least expected from him, but if he gets rocked Golden Boy will face him with Jose Luis Castillo or Yori Boy Campas as far as I know.

I see what you mean

A win is expected, but do you really believe Shane can still pull the trigger and finish Canelo early? Going the distance will only benefit Canelo…

shane's gonna turn back the clock
And then Canelo will, in turn, clean it for him.
i wonder if there's any way he can work in a floyd type cold-cocking

i could see him distracting canelo with an awkward hug of two and then blasting him with a left right

100% of shot is not as good a 10% work in progress

I assume he's talking about the toll making 147 took on his body,

He could be a touch stronger at 154, but for how long?

Shane needs an early left hook finisher. It’s not impossible.

Still SHOULD NOT be fighting.

He also had the foot injury for the Pacquiao fight.

Lee

He fought Winky, Mayorga, and Mora at 154….and he was preety ineffective then.

Stick a fork in him. He’s cooked. Not RJJ crisped…but pretty well done.
