Tonight's double-header on ShoBox: The New Generation is live at 11 p.m. EST from the Chumash Casino in Santa Ynez, Calif., and Bad Left Hook will be here with round-by-round coverage and immediate post-fight results.
In the main event, Puerto Rican junior welterweight prospect Thomas Dulorme looks to add another win to his record when he meets up with Aris Ambriz in a fight scheduled for 10 rounds. Dulorme (13-0, 10 KO) has big power and looks like a fairly polished fighter for a 22-year-old kid who hasn't had much pro experience, and is the heavy favorite (-5000) tonight against Ambriz (16-2-1, 8 KO).
The 26-year-old Ambriz is a replacement opponent tonight, and the third man chosen for the job. Dulorme was originally scheduled to face Jose Reynoso, who came down ill, and then was set to face Terrance Cauthen, who bailed before signing on, too. Ambriz was seen by the diehards last May on Showtime Extreme, deep on the Pacquiao vs Mosley undercard, losing to Pier Olivier Cote.
Dulorme sparred with Marcos Maidana to prepare for this fight, and shouldn't have much trouble.

In the co-feature, another Puerto Rican prospect will get a chance to shine, as junior middleweight Jonathan Gonzalez (14-0, 13 KO) takes on American gatekeeper Billy Lyell (24-10, 5 KO). Lyell has challenged for a world title in the past, but that was more an emergency call-up to the big leagues than any indicator of his being a top fighter. Lyell is OK, and the right sort of test for Gonzalez at this stage.
Gonzalez, 22, has been a bit of a mixed bag thus far in his pro career. Though his record and KO rate are impressive, he hasn't been spectacular in his last couple of fights, wins over Richard Gutierrez (UD-10) and Rudy Cisneros (TKO-7). He gets hit more than you might like to see, and has some sloppy habits. Lyell is an interesting test for him.

Holy shit look at Dulorme’s creepy death stare
Scott Christ - February 17, 2012
Kelly Pavlik in Lyell’s corner. He looks…really good physically. Looks healthy. knock on wood.
Scott Christ - February 17, 2012
HE HAS A DISEASE!
Brent Brookhouse - February 17, 2012
This is the sort of fight we should be seeing on ShoBox. Lyell isn’t anything special, but he’s a tough vet and a legit test for a fighter at Gonzalez’s level.
We should be seeing prospects fighting other prospects or taking steps up, not seeing them in against no-hopers.
Verklemptomaniac - February 17, 2012
Yeah, I like this fight personally.
Duan - February 17, 2012
I don’t mind this one. The main event sucks, and so did the original main event.
Scott Christ - February 17, 2012
Billy Lyell is incredibly ugly.
Also, they’re really into rhyming Lyell
Brent Brookhouse - February 17, 2012
I wonder why Jonathan’s nickname is “Butter”
Apprentice - February 17, 2012
is he slippery?
Apprentice - February 17, 2012
Because he’s on a roll?
Brent Brookhouse - February 17, 2012
Because Shawn Estrada tried to eat him?
Verklemptomaniac - February 17, 2012
Not gonna do the descriptions. Will score but more into just talking about these fights and watching. Usually when I do that we get a really good fight!
Scott Christ - February 17, 2012
woof
Hey now. Some exchanges.
Scott Christ - February 17, 2012
Not a shock, but Lyell looks like he came to fight
Brent Brookhouse - February 17, 2012
Billy Lyell looks like a tough local pug from 1948.
Scott Christ - February 17, 2012
Yeeep. Gonzalez still has a lot of issues.
Scott Christ - February 17, 2012
Look at Lyell’s calves.
Scott Christ - February 17, 2012
Lyell 10-9, good round.
Scott Christ - February 17, 2012
10-9 Lyell
Well, the vet sure has some gas left in the tank.
Verklemptomaniac - February 17, 2012
He’s still pretty young. Just a tough fighter. If he could punch, I really think he’d be even more of a handful.
Scott Christ - February 17, 2012
Good first round.
TheDemolitionDan - February 17, 2012 via iPhone app
I just want to beat everyone to it since I think someone will say it in like 20 minutes. But I bet Lyell gets robbed on the cards
Brent Brookhouse - February 17, 2012
I should really stop watching Puerto Rican prospects… every time I do, they stink it up and I get depressed for the state of boxing on the Island.
Apprentice - February 17, 2012
Hey, it could be Argentina.
Brent Brookhouse - February 17, 2012
Or the Northeast
Verklemptomaniac - February 17, 2012
ugh
the northeast
Scott Christ - February 17, 2012
Mickey Ward is from the northeast.
BoxAnne - February 17, 2012
also Delvin Rodriguez.
BoxAnne - February 17, 2012
to be clear
i’m just talking about their recent crop of coddled “prospects.”
Scott Christ - February 17, 2012
So’s Matt Remillard
Scott Christ - February 17, 2012
Matt Remillar would have pasted all 4 guys on FNF tonight.
BoxAnne - February 17, 2012
Eh, maybe if he had a ballbat in hand.
Scott Christ - February 17, 2012
Not that that’s saying much, but they weren’t from the NE.
BoxAnne - February 17, 2012
You think much more highly of Matt Remillard than I.
Brent Brookhouse - February 17, 2012
Well, yeah, so’s Tyson and a whole lotta other guys. But in the last decade or so, aside from maybe Peter Quillan, and who knows if he’ll be able to step up to true world-class level, who’s the last good fighter from the northeast in the past decade?
Verklemptomaniac - February 17, 2012
paulie malignaggi for one.
BoxAnne - February 17, 2012
Point, but that’s a way’s back.
And as NYC expat, it kills me to see the state of propects from the region.
Verklemptomaniac - February 17, 2012
Speaking of the future of Puerto Rican boxer, Roman Martinez really faded into obscurity quickly after being dominated by Burns didn’t he?
Apprentice - February 17, 2012
Even though he’s getting hit, it’s probably good for Lyell to be forcing this to be a faster fight. If one of them fades I don’t think it’s him.
Brent Brookhouse - February 17, 2012
Gonzalez 10-9, 19-19. This is a good fight. It actually looks like a fight, which has sadly been a rarity this year.
Scott Christ - February 17, 2012
10-9 Gonzalez, 19-19
Better from Gonzalez, doing some good body work and throwing in combination.
Verklemptomaniac - February 17, 2012
What the fuck. Interpreter Adolfo Martin’s contribution was:
Corner: “OK.”
Adolfo: “OK.”
Scott Christ - February 17, 2012
I hate how quiet it is. Hate quiet crowds, makes me uncomfortable.
TheDemolitionDan - February 17, 2012 via iPhone app
WHLRHELKHRALRJA! LOW BLOW! ARE YOU OKAY?!
…yeah.
Something about that was really weird.
Brent Brookhouse - February 17, 2012
10-9 Gonzalez, 29-28
Much better by Gonzalez these last two rounds. Really using his strength and superior power to sieze control. Lyell isn’t doing badly, but he’s getting hit hard.
Verklemptomaniac - February 17, 2012
Gonzalez 29-28 through three. Good fight. Just a nice, enjoyable fight, with two guys fighting.
Scott Christ - February 17, 2012
Gonzalez get his feet on the wrong place a lot. He’s awkward moving to either side.
I think he is what he is, so I’m interested in whether it will becomes an issue for him.
Duan - February 17, 2012
Gonzalez 3-1, 39-37.
Lyell: “yeah fuck it.”
Indeed.
Scott Christ - February 17, 2012
Gonzalez isn’t bad, but he’s got pretty clear flaws in his footwork, predictability and some liabilities defensively.
Brent Brookhouse - February 17, 2012
Hey all first time poster here.
Lurked a few times including while I was at Ward vs Froch. I got it 3-1 gonzalez.
What is it with guys tonight have trouble making weight? The guy had to go to the scales 7 times?
sp0rtsfan86 - February 17, 2012
welcome!
I don’t know – they even had a catchweight here (156).
Scott Christ - February 17, 2012
between this and the joke of a fight on FNF it makes me question the boxers "want" to get down to a weight.
sp0rtsfan86 - February 17, 2012
Estrada clearly didn’t care. Gonzalez being a young guy could just be an issue where he did things wrong. Hopefully he learns going forward.
Brent Brookhouse - February 17, 2012
very true.
sp0rtsfan86 - February 17, 2012
Gonzalez looks chubby
Apprentice - February 17, 2012
of course, i feel ridiculous writing that because next to him I am a hippo
Apprentice - February 17, 2012
The fun of being a fight fan.
THIS GUY IS FAT AS SHIT! WHAT’S HE WEIGH? 156? JESUS, FATTY!
Brent Brookhouse - February 17, 2012
well yeah
I’ll call Shawn Estrada fat and all, but if I was at 196 right now I’d never put a shirt on. HELLO LADIES
Scott Christ - February 17, 2012
hahahaha yeah!
Apprentice - February 17, 2012
He’s always been soft in the body. I think he’s really a middleweight, or maybe just a junior middle who could stand to try a little harder.
Scott Christ - February 17, 2012
I think that's my point.
seems like some of these guys don’t try to make weight.
sp0rtsfan86 - February 17, 2012
Lyell is 27? Fuuuuuuuuuuck… he looks really bad for 27
Apprentice - February 17, 2012
no doubt
Matt Miller - February 17, 2012
“He reminds me of Freddie Roach when he was a fighter”
….eeeeep
Brent Brookhouse - February 17, 2012
Guys with faces like that look like that when they’re 10 yrs. old. They actually improve with age, probably because anything is an improvement.
BoxAnne - February 17, 2012
Because at least you’re supposed to look old once you get old. You shouldn’t look like that at 10.
Brent Brookhouse - February 17, 2012
that’s true… when they get old, they catch up with their faces
Apprentice - February 17, 2012
Boy, I love how easily Steve and Al switch between banter and calling the fight. Never losing sight of the actual action at hand but not being so deeply buried as to be straight up white noise. Best crew in the fight biz.
Brent Brookhouse - February 17, 2012
Agreed. Very enjoyable. They don’t step on each other or try and one up each other. Very professional and classy. Easily the best team in boxing.
TheDemolitionDan - February 17, 2012 via iPhone app
10-9 Lyell, 48-47 Gonzalez
Verklemptomaniac - February 17, 2012
Lyell 10-9, Gonzalez 48-47
Scott Christ - February 17, 2012
This is nothing special, but it's a relief after the snoozers on FNF earlier.
Matt Miller - February 17, 2012
That got the crowd going.
Matt Miller - February 17, 2012
10-9 Gonzaelz, 58-56
Is Gonzalez carrying a trill? What’s with that tattoo?
Verklemptomaniac - February 17, 2012
I’m liking this fight a lot. More than old grumpy Matt up there. 57-57 through six.
Scott Christ - February 17, 2012
Hey you boxing fans, get out of my yard!
Matt Miller - February 17, 2012
good fight so far.
This would be what I call a beer fight. It’s a great fight to grab a beer sit back and watch a fight. No real bombs being thrown or imminant knockdowns, just two guys giving a good show. I’ll take this over a fight that’s a two round KO that you sit down and is over.
Props to the guy who put this fight on tv.
sp0rtsfan86 - February 17, 2012
on topic of SHO boxing
Corey Erdman says he expects Jean Pascal vs Zsolt Erdei, Jermain Taylor vs Joachim Alcine double-header to be announced soon.
Scott Christ - February 17, 2012
An appropriately soft-but-not-ridiculously-soft touch for Taylor’s return.
Verklemptomaniac - February 17, 2012
I think it’s the right kind of fight, really. Kinda like Williams-Ishida — Alcine is just barely good enough to expose Taylor if he’s really shot.
Scott Christ - February 17, 2012
Question:
Do you think Taylor will ever get the hype/promotion he did before all the injuries set in? At one time, I remember him being one of the top guys, now he’s seemingly starting all over beating guys that are a step below what he’s capable of.
sp0rtsfan86 - February 17, 2012
No, he’ll never be that guy again. He’s not good enough, for one thing.
Scott Christ - February 17, 2012
I think his prime was wasted with his layoff.
Not exactly his fault with all the injuries but still.
sp0rtsfan86 - February 17, 2012
His prime was wasted with the terrible decision to fire Pat Burns and hire Emanuel Steward.
Scott Christ - February 17, 2012
yes.
totally forgot about that somehow.
sp0rtsfan86 - February 17, 2012
Zsolt Erdei is 37
37 !!!! I did not think he was 37.
Duan - February 17, 2012
10-9 Gonzalez, 68-65
Verklemptomaniac - February 17, 2012
Well, I’m off… my stream apparently let in some crappy virus… not risking it again tonight
Apprentice - February 17, 2012
67-66 Gonzalez for me
Scott Christ - February 17, 2012
76-76 here
Brent Brookhouse - February 17, 2012
10-9 Lyell, 77-75 Gonzalez
Verklemptomaniac - February 17, 2012
76-76. Lyell is gonna be running on fumes for the rest of this fight, but he’s fighting like hell.
Scott Christ - February 17, 2012
77-75 Gonzalez
TheDemolitionDan - February 17, 2012 via iPhone app
77-75 Gonzalez in my book.
sp0rtsfan86 - February 17, 2012
After praising Al and Steve...
they’re now way too heavy on punch stats as though they are indicative of round winners.
Brent Brookhouse - February 17, 2012
Anyone else think that this fight will be overshadowed by judges decisions?
Seems like a fight that should be really close in scoring but will end up being one sided on a judge that was lost.
sp0rtsfan86 - February 17, 2012
Of course. It always is. Billy needs a KO to get a draw.
TheDemolitionDan - February 17, 2012 via iPhone app
uh…86-85 Lyle.
Brent Brookhouse - February 17, 2012
Lyell
Brent Brookhouse - February 17, 2012
lyell gets that round.
really got to him there.
sp0rtsfan86 - February 17, 2012
10-9 Lyell, 86-85 Gonzalez
Gonzalez is badly gassed. There’s nothing on his punches right now.
Verklemptomaniac - February 17, 2012
86-85 Lyell. His effort is outstanding. He’s dog tired and just marching through it.
Scott Christ - February 17, 2012
that counter right from Gonzalez was slick
Matt Miller - February 17, 2012
I’ve got it a draw. Okay with either guy getting a close decision. Expect wide scores for Gonzalez.
Brent Brookhouse - February 17, 2012
10-9 Gonzalez, 96-94
Can see an argument for a draw, or a slightly wider Gonzalez win.
Verklemptomaniac - February 17, 2012
i have Gonzalez by a round or two.
this should be interesting scorecard though.
sp0rtsfan86 - February 17, 2012
As I said, have it a draw. I have an easier time seeing it for Lyell than Gonzalez
Brent Brookhouse - February 17, 2012
Kayode can be pretty fun in the ring.
Matt Miller - February 17, 2012
His last few haven’t been all that fun at all.
Scott Christ - February 17, 2012
I know.
Matt Miller - February 17, 2012
I went 10-10 tenth, 96-95 for Lyell. Farhood’s 98-92 for Gonzalez ain’t what I watched.
Scott Christ - February 17, 2012
I didn't keep score, but my sense was that Gonzalez won.
Matt Miller - February 17, 2012
96-94 Gonzalez. Should be a close fight, but I’m sure at least one judge will have it a shut out.
TheDemolitionDan - February 17, 2012 via iPhone app
Gonzalez doing the “i broke my hand” dance.
Brent Brookhouse - February 17, 2012
Wouldn’t argue a round either way.
Gonzalez is still a really young, inexperienced guy, and this was a great learning fight for him. However, this is his level for the time being. I see him getting smoked if they move him up from here anytime soon.
Duan - February 17, 2012
97-93, 97-93, 98-92 all for Jonathan Gonzalez. Lyell just nods. Crowd boos a lot, but honestly I don’t think it’s a bad decision or anything.
Scott Christ - February 17, 2012
97-93, 97-93, 98-92
…yep. As expected, far too wide for Gonzalez.
Brent Brookhouse - February 17, 2012
97-93 is fine. 98-92 is rather wide.
Verklemptomaniac - February 17, 2012
Not a bad scorecard. not a great one by any stretch. I had it 97-93 also.
Class to gonzalez for raising Lyell’s hand.
sp0rtsfan86 - February 17, 2012
A Don King sighting?
I was hoping he stayed semi retired and away from the ring.
sp0rtsfan86 - February 17, 2012
Love the prelim bouts on Sho Extreme.
TheDemolitionDan - February 17, 2012 via iPhone app
CHIN-CHECKING AT THE CHUMASH. He’s trying to make “fetch” happen.
Scott Christ - February 18, 2012
Chin-checking at the Chumah!
Matt Miller - February 18, 2012
Wow, 18 of his 16 wins came by knockout. Didn’t realize Ambriz was that powerful.
Verklemptomaniac - February 18, 2012
He actually knocked one guy out three times in the same fight.
Scott Christ - February 18, 2012
Was he fighting Kermit Cintron with Frank Santore reffing?
Verklemptomaniac - February 18, 2012
I know a certain group that loved the “chin checking” phrase. Ha ha.
TheDemolitionDan - February 18, 2012 via iPhone app
Hoping Dulorme puts the kibosh on this one and isn’t “looking for rounds.” I know it matters but I don’t have to like it.
Scott Christ - February 18, 2012
WHAM!
down goes Ambriz
Scott Christ - February 18, 2012
Chin? Checked. Fail.
Matt Miller - February 18, 2012
Wow.
Put that one in the books.
sp0rtsfan86 - February 18, 2012
He’s not gonna make it out of the round. BIG RIGHT AND DOWN AGAIN! IT’S OVER!
Scott Christ - February 18, 2012
And “In Bloom” plays in the background.
Scott Christ - February 18, 2012
I guess you could say Aris got knocked out… by a stiff Ambriz.
Verklemptomaniac - February 18, 2012
Boom. That was a nice left hook. Dang. Dynamite power.
TheDemolitionDan - February 18, 2012 via iPhone app
I love the way Dulorme ducks and slides to create angles to land punches.
Verklemptomaniac - February 18, 2012
Nice KO.
Have a good one guys. It’s been fun.
sp0rtsfan86 - February 18, 2012
Would like to see TD take another step up.. Hats off to him for tonight though
