Bad Left Hook

Can you go lower than this?

"He is from Great Britain, but he’s lacking appropriate manners."—Vitali Klitschko after being slapped

"The hardest thing I have ever done was not break his face."— Wladimir Klitschko after being spat upon

Dereck "Del Boy" Chisora has a reputation for pre-fight weirdness having once planted a wet and meaningful kiss on the lips of hardly fetching opponent Carl Baker in a weigh-in situation. His behavior almost sparked a mini riot. More importantly, it was a prelude of things to come.

Chisora was suspended for mistaking the ear of limited Paul Butlin for a McNugget during their 2009 contest at the York Hall in Bethnal Green. As a result, the hungry but financially-challenged Chisora missed out on his fight for a British title against Danny Williams. He was also fined £2,500.

For the more recent Vitali slap heard ‘round the world and perpetrated while wearing a Union Jack mask, the weirdness continued as WBC president José Sulaimán described the slap as "an absolute disgrace." Thanks, Jose, for your salient point.

Seemingly intent on finding a bottom to his behavior, Del Boy then spat a rather large amount of liquid (hopefully water) into Wladimir’s face before the Vitali fight. Just when you thought Chisora couldn’t reach any lower, he did.

Oh yes, the lowbrow behavior from this loose British cannon is all quite apart from his being convicted of beating up a girlfriend.

But the madness had legs. On Saturday night, after Vitali Klitschko’s 10th successful defense of his WBC heavyweight title ended, chaos erupted when Chisora brawled with fellow loon and former WBA champion David Haye during the post-fight news conference. Chisora made fun of Haye’s toe. The brawl was witnessed by the Klitschko brothers who stood at the dais in wonderment. Del Boy still faces a charge of simple assault but he is allowed to return to England for now," police spokesman Gottfried Schlicht told AP on Sunday. British Boxing Board of Control general secretary Robert Smith indicated the governing body would launch an investigation.

I can’t find the butt, but it was a beauty. Del Boy launched a billy goat that would make Holyfield blink.

Many news report that Chirosa and Haye may be banned for life.

One point, which may be minor but may be important when thinking about this.

I think all too much is being made of the fact Chisora is British.

I think he’d be an asshole no matter where he was from.

I thought he was born in Zimbabwe?
Yes , he is a Zimbabwe asshole. First I ever encountered,

Agree, but have to say if two US athletes/fighters went into a high-profile situation in another country, I’d be feeling pretty embarrassed.

Why? Because you had the audacity to be born on the same bit of rock, or between the same man-made borders?

I’m British, and I do not feel at all embarrassed to be so. This kind of reminds me of a comment that cropped up recently in discussion regarding the Luis Suarez issue, which is attributed to Gordon Strachan when he was Celtic manager:
""The guy is a moron, that’s what that guy is, a moron. He’ll be a moron when he walks out of the stadium" (he was talking about someone supposedly abusing him about his religion, and he was asked something which was phrased in a way in which it would have been easy to label all Rangers fans, and tar them with the same brush. Strachan declined, and used that quote, and also made comments which were something like “had he been wearing a Celtic shirt and said that, he’s have still been a moron.” I tried to find the whole quote, but couldn’t. I’ll try again later.)

If a guy is a moron, then he is. It matters little what flag he was born under, what star sign he is or what car he drives. I have no connection to David Haye, or to Derek Chisora. If they act like morons, they are. If two American guys act like morons, they are too. I wouldn’t judge you for the behaviour of men you’ve never met, and I’d be very surprised if you judged me in that manner. I certainly won’t apologize for their misdemeanours: they acted like assholes, Britain did not act like an asshole.

Good points. A moron is a moron. Don't blame his country. Perhaps his mother, but not his country.

I agree. Oibas makes his points here

I guess I put it poorly—in no way do I think Britons should be embarrassed by this, for all the reasons you mention. However it’s understandable to me that some do take it that way, because people do identify, and I identify, with where they come from, even though it’s a questionable sort of identity marker.. I don’t, however I might feel if the situation were US fighters involved in similar antics, think any less of Britain or Britons themselves in the least over this.

I understand where you’re coming from.

Spot on BoxAnne.

I didn’t think Americans were idiots because Larry Holmes jumped over a car and dropped kicked Berbick. I just thought Holmes should stick to his fists as his kicking was shit.
I didn’t think Americans were idiots when Tyson bit Holy’s ear. I just thought he must be hungry.
I didn’t think Americans were idiots when Bowe sucker punched Larry Donald at a presso. I just thought he was too close for a left hand and should of used an elbow.
Idiocy is international.

Quality post.... :)
Is having a tear-up at a weigh-in any worse than admitting to fixing a fight?

http://www1.skysports.com/boxing/news/12183/7533287/Froch-prolonged-fights-

I wonder where this puts Froch legally. Pakistani cricketers were convicted and incarcerated for stuff which is contextually very similar to this.

He has now said he didn't do that stuff, but...............

This is a really big news story, I think, and has been lost a little in the fuss about Haye and Chisora.

The way I understand it he only says he regrets having admitted it, he isn’t saying he didn’t do it.

But the comments made about prolonging the fight were a throwaway comment that, in hindsight, I shouldn’t have said. I shouldn’t have said that because I have never done that.

“It’s too dangerous to try and attempt to do that in a fight.

have to say, the spitting and slapping seem worse to me re boxing than the brawl. All of it stupid and gross, of course, but the brawl wasn’t in the ring or the weigh-in, which are integral parts of boxing. The brawl is just a brawl, and seems to me a police matter. Imo, both should be charged by the German police, and be tried, convicted an at least fined.

I reckon the spit was Chisora’s reaction to Wlad having him re-wrap his hands, possibly also for the two fights which never happened. Don’t agree with it, but I think that was his way of saying ’f’k you’.

That is freaking retarded. It’s a much worse way of saying “f*ck you” than actually saying “F*ck you!!!”. Come on, it’s was freaking disgusting!

I don't think Phil is saying it's not disgusting, he's just giving an opinion on why it happened.

And I don’t think his reasoning is “retarded”. It makes perfect sense to me.

I second that

Phill’s point is spot on.
He’s not saying it was right, he is giving reasoning why he thinks he did it.

Whether Wlad was trying to unsettle him with the wraps or not

(i thought Wlad always watched the opponent get his hands wrapped?),
Chisora was the one who started it all with the “slap heard around the world”.

wow, wow, wow, sorry for the misunderstanding!!!!

I meant if Chisora did it just to get back at Wlad, that is a retarded way to do it. I meant Chisora is retarded, but yeah, reading it again I didn’t phrase that correctly at all.
Phil’s thinking is correct, it just assumes Chisora is really messed up, which he is :)

Matt/Olbas… Thanks lads. Radu, no offense taken :) Glad you understood my post.

Can we just get along?

All good Pops!! ;-)

cool ad. Ted

Although I never wanted to turn the light off after talking to Mr Bill.

Scaaaaryyyyy.

MRBILL is one scary dude

Haha!! Ok, but I was referring to your advert.

OH NOOOOOOOOOOO

Personally, I’m more scared of Sluggo. And while Mr Bill might be a badass, he’s still scared of Mr Hand.

OH, I am the scariest human being alive. And by extension, so is my ad.
