Alexander vs Maidana: Adrien Broner Talks About Eloy Perez

Adrien Broner has an abrasive personality. Whether it is his "Money" Mayweather-lite attitude or the fact that he has a guy who combs his hair, Broner's personality makes for a decent heel. A recent interview with Jake Donovan shows that despite the tough front, he takes every opponent seriously.

"The thing about me, I don't treat any opponent different from the other," Broner insists. "These guys are not going to be beat me. I'm going to beat everyone in my way. The only way I'll ever lose is if I beat myself, and I'll die before I let that happen. He's another guy trying to beat me and will be another guy getting an L on his record."

"I keep the hunger when the big time comes," Broner says, reiterating a point that he's earned his place on the big stage and not that it's been handed to him as some have speculated due to his relationship with advisor Al Haymon. "The problem with most is that you're hungry until you get the money, then you lose focus. Me? I train like I don't have sh*t."

Star-divide

Broner moves past these generalities and focuses on his next fight against Eloy Perez taking place on February 25th in St. Louis on HBO.

"I'm not thinking about the future just yet. You know what they say, don't count the chickens before they hatch. I have Eloy Perez in front of me. I'm not looking past him, under him or around him. He'll be there with me all night. Correct that - he'll be there with me for as long as he can last.

"After I win, I can start looking forward to making dates and shining. Until February 25 is over, it's all about taking care of Perez. I keep hearing rumors that Eloy is talking that I won't know what hit me. The facts are that he's looking up to me. He's looking to get what I have. I know what he'll bring to the table. I don't look past him. I don't care if he comes in with two knives, an AK-47 and a bat, he will not beat me. I'll do whatever it takes to get the job done."

Broner's confidence seems to be sky high after his last two fights against Jason Litzau and Vicente Rodriguez. These fights both ended with a knockout and both were finished before the fourth round. Broner seems to have the deadly combination of speed and power that can end any fight at any time. Eloy Perez does not have big names on his resume, but that doesn't mean he should be overlooked. He has trained with big fighters like Robert Guerrero and is going to go to camp with Brandon Rios before his fight with Yuriorkis Gamboa. Do you guys think that Eloy Perez has a shot against Adrien Broner?

Sometimes I wish Japan and the US weren’t two parallel boxing worlds. I would like to see if Broner considered Uchiyama just another fighter like all others.

Broner hasn’t done much yet and I’m already sick of him. I suppose some of that is the obnoxious personality, but I also just haven’t been that impressed. Sure, he KO’d Litzau and Rodriguez, but I also had him losing on the scorecard against Ponce de Leon. His piss-poor shoulder roll attempts and his style of mugging/bravado would get him KTFO if he was in with a really good fighter. Perhaps I’ll be proven wrong and he’ll be an all-timer, but he seems like a B+ fighter at best to me.

Yeah, I’d forgotten about that fight against Ponce de Leon. I had Broner losing as well.

Don’t know too much about Perez (a little YouTube) to make a guess on his chances, but thinking Broner by KO here……………….just think he’s that good.

Eloy is where my money is at for this one, broner will have trouble when eloy puts him on the ropes.

The hair combing thing is annoying, but it isn’t enough. Dude needs to go full Morris Day and get someone with a gigantic mirror in his corner.

thats...

Funny shit!

He’ll beat Perez. The Ponce de Leon fight was a wake up call.

I'm just waiting for him to start talking in third person

when that happens…..He will have arrived.

the boxing world's got a whole new problem

he’s gonna be p4p soon enough

I’m waiting for the hbo crew to awkwardly/awesomely call him boner instead if broner. Those dudes can mess up any name (Chad Johnson for example).

I think Floyd did start something here. Being a heel equals recognition and more money, as long as you keep winning. As long as Broner doesn’t run into a fighter he can’t handle, then some boxing fans’ woes, have yet to stop.

Or as long as he can get away with a decision that’s not supposed to go his way…

Seems like decisions are the new loopholes in boxing. I agree, i feel some judges already know who the favorite is, so they judge fights with a discriminatory eye. it seems like every other fight now, someone is getting robbed.

I don’t think it’s any worse now, than in previous decades. The internet and television has made everyone more aware of poor decisions all over the world, whereas these poor decision would be just swept under the rug. Also there is no regulation for poor decision. No way to measure the performance of judges and the commissions are not looking to remedy this problem either.

The solution to this problem is rather simple. At any given large card, there are several judges at the location for each given fight. Have every single judge, give a scorecard for each fight. Whoever wins the most scorecards, wins the fight.

That is not the solution to this problem.

You could also do the figure skating thing where you throw out the best and worst score.

Or you could just make sure judges are qualified, uncorrupted, and know what the fuck they’re doing. If you want a real solution you make a real effort, not just “let’s have MORE shitty judges scoring fights!”

Or you could have people barred from judging if they turn in a 116-100 scorecard where everyone including the other fighters mom couldn’t believe…

Oh I’m of the firm belief that these organizations have no idea how to make judges qualified, uncorrupted, and know what the fuck they’re doing. Also there doesn’t seem to be any metrics to measure a qualified and uncorrupted judge, at least no obvious metrics.

In increasing the number of judges, at least we start getting the law of averages to work in our favor. However, I feel like we need to do a scientific study where a judge watches a fight with noise canceling headphones versus a judge simply watching the fight ringside. I feel like the crowd unduly influences the judges with their cheers, and that is a component that should be taken out of the equation.

Shit, I might take you up on that. I’ll give you credit in my paper hahaha

Dude if you seriously want to work on this I will join you. My email is at the bottom of the page.

floyd or pro wrestling but yeah being a heel pays
