Tonight at 10 p.m. EST, HBO goes live with the network's first boxing show of 2012, a double-header featuring a pair of title fights.
In the main event, WBC middleweight titlist Julio Cesar Chavez Jr (44-0-1, 31 KO) defends against Marco Antonio Rubio (53-5-1, 46 KO) in a 12-round bout. Chavez is making the second defense of the title he won from Sebastian Zbik last June, following a win over Peter Manfredo Jr in November.

The co-feature will decide the vacant WBO super bantamweight title. Nonito Donaire (27-1, 18 KO) is back in action in his first fight at 122 pounds, facing ex-titlist Wilfredo Vazquez Jr (21-1-1, 18 KO) in another 12-round bout. Donaire is looking to pick up a title belt in a third weight class, following titles at 112 and 118 (he won only an interim belt in his stopover at 115).
These two fights will conclude a long day of live coverage here at Bad Left Hook, so join us as we wrap up our first really big weekend of fights this year.

Thats what I had to resort to
Who you got for tonight?
Im thinking of changing my Chavez by dec for Rubio because of Jr being tight at the weight and the supposed Drink Driving charges
Sweet science - February 4, 2012
i’m rooting for rubio to notch another upset stoppage here. i dunno a whole lot about him, but if he bides his time like he did with lemieux and looks for the right spot to attack he might pull something off. only because Jr is so unspectacular. Jr’ll prolly get the dec. though.

You know, I’ll spot Lampley the “one punch knockout of Montiel”. It really should have been — that fight had no business continuing another second after Donaire put Montiel down with that shot.

Donaire vs Vazquez Round 1
First minute is tentative, both flicking their jabs. Right hand Donaire is blocked by Vazquez’s elbow. Donaire fires a left hook, doesn’t get there. Donaire throwing, not landing. Vazquez not throwing anything, or in the words of Emanuel, “Vazquez hasn’t did anythin yet.”
Donaire looking for the power shots, but not finding the target yet. Uppercut misses, right hand misses. Left hook counter from Donaire does land. Not big, but got there.

Every time Vazquez does open up, Donaire fires back. Donaire slips, and then Donaire is all mad about something. Donaire really wants that left uppercut followed by the straight right hand. Vazquez just jabbing here and there, pretty much nothing else.
Left to the body by Donaire. Donaire’s face reddening up a little bit. Little mouse under his right eye. Man, Vazquez still hasn’t did anythin yet. Left hook body by Donaire, heads almost come together. Vazquez short on a right hand.

Donaire vs Vazquez Round 3
Wow. Vazquez is doing absolutely nothing in there and this sucks. Donaire trying to taunt him into throwing, it’s not working.
Left hook stings Vazquez! DONAIRE GOING FOR THE KILL IN THE CORNER! Vazquez, just like against Arce, has no idea what to do. Out of the corner, now on the ropes. Vazquez swings wildly and badly misses a left hook and falls on his ass.
Great body hook from Donaire. He’s clowning Vazquez.

Donaire vs Vazquez Round 4
Donaire is starting to fight goofy, angry maybe. Lederman gave him a 10-8 last round, but I don’t think he did near enough damage for that. Just my opinion.
Vazquez’s jab is landing. Donaire seems unconcerned. Uppercut from Donaire cracks him good. Body shot from Donaire. As soon as Vazquez starts throwing punches, he’s getting creamed. San Antonio crowd not thrilled with this fight. Is anyone?
Donaire is obsessed with a one-punch KO here. Right hand from Vazquez clips Donaire, but then a Donaire hook clips Vazquez.

Right hand from Vazquez about halfway into the round after they continue to “feel each other out.” Vazquez with a jab. Donaire is playing around in there. Donaire with a good shot. Vazquez making somewhat more confident pushes on offense. Left hook from Vazquez. He’s picking off Donaire’s shots a bit more. Donaire might be getting a bit predictable. Donaire goes southpaw, because it worked so great against midget Tyson Marquez. That doesn’t last. Vazquez’s jab starting to become a real weapon now. Donaire’s jab isn’t there. Donaire’s defense too slick for WV2’s power shots to land though.

Right hand and left to the body from Donaire. Vazquez to the body, but he eats an uppercut. WV2 with a jab. Body shot Vazquez. Right hand Donaire. Picking up here for a moment. Donaire still badly wants that counter left. He loves guys who walk into his counter left.

Two things
1) I’m really surprised Jr. can’t speak English by now, coming up in his background
2) Junior is soooo much bigger than his dad, I question whether they’re actually related by blood.

Chavez vs Rubio Round 1
Well, Rubio is coming out moving his hands, so he’s not gonna wait for the kid, it wouldn’t appear.
Left to the body from Rubio. Overhand right from Chavez, not a lot on it. Jab from Rubio. Chavez is huge compared to Rubio, just as Pavlik was. Rubio is really a 154 guy. As Emanuel would say, just like I was sayin’ before.
Chavez jabbing a little bit now. Body shot from Chavez, and a good one. That’s his meal ticket. Rubio to the body, a bit low, and Rubio acknowledges the quick warning. Chavez slips a jab. right hand by Rubio, but doesn’t sting Chavez. Chavez keeping distance this round, doesn’t look too concerned with throwing a ton just yet.
Chavez 10-9
Scott Christ - February 4, 2012
Between here and Twitter first round was about 75-25 for Rubio it would appear. He was more active.

Chavez vs Rubio Round 2
Left to the body by Chavez. Rubio coming to him, Chavez sort of staying away. Chavez with a jab but misses a long right. Chavez muscles him to the corner, then does nothing, Rubio gets out. I think that’s a “Rubio” chant. He does have his fans here.
Very slow round here. Jab from Rubio. Jab from Chavez clips him. Little body shot from Rubio. Body shot that time, little shot upstairs after. Chavez with a right, but mostly misses it.

El Destruyo - February 4, 2012
Two things
1) Unlike the Pavlik fight, Rubio is here to compete. Whether he wins (or even deserves to) is another question, but it’s a good thing.
2) I already have a feeling that Rubio was right to protest this ref. Just a sentiment that he’s leaning a little harder on Rubio than Chavez
schraubd - February 4, 2012
10-9 jcc, 29-28 Rubio
OmarLittle - February 4, 2012
Chavez vs Rubio Round 3
Chavez with a left hook, blinding right, left to the body. They’re getting close, and that favors Chavez and his body weight + physical strength. Rubio getting muscled this round for sure. Two shots from Rubio, but Chavez fires back. Little left inside from Chavez. This is becoming a phone booth fight if JCC can help it. Blocking a lot of Rubio’s shots. Left hook from Rubio to the body, sort of slapping. Chavez coming straight in, head first.
Right hand from Chavez. Rubio looking for uppercuts, not finding them. Chavez with some heavy shots. Left hook rom Chavez, and now Rubio lands but gets backed down at the same time.
Chavez 10-9
Chavez 29-28
Scott Christ - February 4, 2012
10-9 Chavez, 29-28 same. Difference is that Chavez is massively bigger and stronger, and his punches are landing with more effect.

Chavez vs Rubio Round 3
Chavez continues to crowd him. Rubio is the one throwing punches, though. Chavez is just sort of getting there and not doing anything with it this round. Jab from Chavez. He doesn’t have a lot of steam on anything but his left hook tonight. Right hand is blocked by Rubio. Round continuing that way — Chavez getting there, Rubio throwing the punches. Not big punches, but it’s something. Chavez’s punches being largely blocked again. Right hand from Rubio gets in. Rubio warned about straying low again, I think. It was barely low if at all. Rubio coming forward in the final seconds.

Buncha loud, not especially effective combinations by JCC here. Loud, if largely useless, but Rubio is not doing enough to counter the noise. I’ve got a sinking feeling here.
El Destruyo - February 4, 2012
Chavez vs Rubio Round 5
Chavez corners him again and this time throws the body shots. Rubio throwing back. Rubio giving about as good as he’s getting here but it’s “Rubio whaling away” says Jim. Rubio strays low yet again, and Chavez takes true exception this time. Don’t know if that was low either.
Good counter right from Chavez when they get back to action. Rubio pushed to the corner again, and Chavez again just putting him where he wants him, but now throwing the punches. Not his usual big attack when he gets those chances, but enough considering Rubio isn’t doing a lot either. Rubio jabbing, misses a right. Chavez slipping Rubio’s punches fairly well so far tonight.

Heat turning up just a hair early in the round. Another low blow – that was actually low. Quick break, back to action. Chavez with a heavy combo, mostly blocked, but those punches were thrown with purpose. Chavez dancing a lot this round. Rubio not doing enough to pursue him either. Rubio jabbing a bit, but it’s not a big jab and not setting anything up. Chavez throwing big shots to end the round, not landing a ton.

Me and Manny Steward know what’s up on Rubio’s punching power. Rubio threw a bunch this round, but he’s landing nothing of real significance and not bothering Chavez. Still, Chavez is doing so little in return that I give Rubio this round.

It's devastating is a weird response to "He has a cool mustache."
cardscott5 - February 5, 2012
Response to Merchant saying “Rubio isn’t a devastating boxer”
Scott Christ - February 5, 2012
Ok
my bad
cardscott5 - February 5, 2012
One thing you can’t take away from Chavez: that kid COMMITS to his punches. No pitty-pat arm stuff, usually.
AndrewDM - February 5, 2012
yep
OmarLittle - February 5, 2012
He also shows a nice commitment to body punching. So many guys abandon that after a few rounds, if they ever do it in the first place.
AndrewDM - February 5, 2012
Sure
But like others have said, the second he actually steps in the ring with a dude who can throw an uppercut…not that he’ll ever do that though
OmarLittle - February 5, 2012
Bingo
Been leading with that head all night, just BEGGING to be cracked by a good uppercut.
AndrewDM - February 5, 2012
he arm punched throughout that one godawful fight on one of the pacman undercards. the fight in which he used the diarrhetic
battle axe of doom - February 5, 2012
That was the worst he’s ever been, by far.
Scott Christ - February 5, 2012
Lowry, right?
Brickhaus - February 5, 2012
yeah
Scott Christ - February 5, 2012
R9 Rubio
86-85 Jr
Bonkers - February 5, 2012
Another close Rubio round for me
But what’s with Compubox today? When they kept live track, the Rubio guy missed half his punches.
Brickhaus - February 5, 2012
10-9 Rubio, 86-85 JCC
OmarLittle - February 5, 2012
Rubio round. Curious to see how well Jr. stands up through the rest of this.
WHAT THE FUCK IS SR DOING INSTRUCTING HIS SON?!
El Destruyo - February 5, 2012
10-9 Rubio, 86-85. They’re tight rounds though. Very tight. And that’s bad for Rubio.
schraubd - February 5, 2012
Chavez vs Rubio Round 9
Geez, this is a weird fight to watch. It’s like a fight on Ambien trying to stay awake. It looks kinda like it was supposed to, but it … doesn’t.
Rubio 10-9
Rubio 86-85
Scott Christ - February 5, 2012
10-9 Rubio, 87-84
Verklemptomaniac - February 5, 2012
Jesus, Harold’s 8-1 card is horrible.
Scott Christ - February 5, 2012
Once again, the Top Rank feed is better than HBO, in spite (and because of) the Colonel.
El Destruyo - February 5, 2012
I seriously have a problem with Lederman’s scorecard… but I know that that’s probably what it’s going to look like
Apprentice - February 5, 2012
If the referee actually docks a point for JCCJr’s elbowing, I’ll drink the rest of this rye bottle in one swallow.
El Destruyo - February 5, 2012
he really should, he’s been warned many times.
Sammlung - February 5, 2012
10-9 Chavez, 95-95
schraubd - February 5, 2012
10-9 Rubio, 95-95
OmarLittle - February 5, 2012
I know that the HBO crew is hardly ever on point, but the way they talk about this fight as though Chavez is beating up on Rubio is .just is so fucking tiresome.
ColtJouvet - February 5, 2012
R10 Rubio
95 All
Bonkers - February 5, 2012
10-9 Rubio, 97-93
I am under no illusions that this resembles the actual scorecards, but Rubio is winning this fight
Verklemptomaniac - February 5, 2012
No idea who won that round. Top Rank says Rubio, Lederman, I’m sure, says Chavez. Guess I’ll call it 10-10.
El Destruyo - February 5, 2012
Chavez vs Rubio Round 10
Rubio has no power on his punches. Chavez isn’t doing enough. This is a bummer of a fight. Not terrible but just 100% forgettable.
Rubio with a little flurry, Chavez coming back. Right from Rubio, then Chavez makes some kind of…noise when Rubio pushes him back a bit. Rubio picking and pecking, Chavez wildly missing.
Rubio 10-9
Rubio 96-94
Scott Christ - February 5, 2012
I feel bad for Rubio… he’s fighting well, but he needed to fight outstanding
Apprentice - February 5, 2012
I don’t think he’s fighting all that well at all. Neither of them are.
Scott Christ - February 5, 2012
well, at least in context he is, after all, you and others here have him winning
Apprentice - February 5, 2012
Chavez round for me
96-94 Rubio
Brickhaus - February 5, 2012
Okay, now I’m pissed off. JCC is not a cornerman.
El Destruyo - February 5, 2012
JCC Jr. wings his hooks like Paul Newman in SOMEONE UP THERE LIKES ME, not like Rocky Graziano, but Paul Newman.
Sean Mills - February 5, 2012
Wow. That’s sharp insight. And I do love that movie.
El Destruyo - February 5, 2012
JCC was getting hurt there.
Bonkers - February 5, 2012
Chavez looked hurt for a second there
I think that woke him up a bit.
Brickhaus - February 5, 2012
good trading in there
battle axe of doom - February 5, 2012
calm the fuck down lampley
battle axe of doom - February 5, 2012

Chavez vs Rubio Round 11
Rubio throwing, that wakes Chavez up a bit and he’s coming forward strong. Uppercut from Rubio, Chavez pushing him back but not actually landing punches is the thing. “Pushing to ropes” is good if you do something. It’s just pushing if you don’t.
Left to the body Chavez, little left upstairs Rubio. Right hand Rubio. Right hand Rubio. Left hook Chavez, right misses. Chavez throwing big, eye-catching punches, but not landing square. There’s a good left hook from Chavez. Crowd coming alive and Chavez is finally, legitimately landing some hard shots in close. All of a sudden it’s the fight I expected.
Chavez coming forward and Lampley has an orgasm and yet Rubio is…winning the round again. Now Lampley trying to explain his bias. He’s the worst.
Rubio cracks him again, Lampley says nothing.
Rubio 10-9
Rubio 106-103
Scott Christ - February 5, 2012
I’m curious, since I’m off this feed: how did Lampley try to explain his bias?
El Destruyo - February 5, 2012
Wish that round went another 20 seconds.
El Destruyo - February 5, 2012
“The problem is that Rubio thinks he’s winning the fight”
good grief.
ColtJouvet - February 5, 2012
10-9, 105-104 Rubio. What I remember about that round, Jim, is Rubio digging deep, matching Chavez shot-for-shot, and taking the round.
schraubd - February 5, 2012
Hey, a fight broke out there for a minute
106-103 Rubio
Brickhaus - February 5, 2012
R11 Rubio
Best round of the night for either guy.
105-104 Rubio
Bonkers - February 5, 2012
10-9 Rubio, 107-102
I don;t know what the hell Lampley is watching. Rubio was landing good, solid hooks all round.
Verklemptomaniac - February 5, 2012
Not watching but I’m calling 119-109 Chavez.
Eoin_not_ian - February 5, 2012
Gus Johnson thinks Lampley needs to tone it down a little
El Presidente - February 5, 2012
lol wow
battle axe of doom - February 5, 2012
Chavez's eye looks really bad
Brickhaus - February 5, 2012
Ladies and gentlemen, prepare for some insulting scorecards.
El Destruyo - February 5, 2012
I wish there was some kind of old-timey radio station that called fights live so that I could mute this garbage and listen to a more reasonable call of the fight.

Chavez vs Rubio Round 12
Rubio landing shots again to start the round. RAGING BULL!!!!! CHAVEZ!!!!!!!
Chavez with a flurry. Man he’s landing none of that clean. Chavez with a left hook. Good body shots from Chavez. Rubio digging in. These last two rounds have been terrific. This is my favorite type of fighting. Rugged, gritty, close quarters.
Hands just flying. Rubio landing a big right hand. Chavez really is fighting his ass off this round, and so is Rubio. Good final two rounds.
Chavez 10-9
Rubio 115-113
Scott Christ - February 5, 2012
10-9 Chavez, 114-114 even
schraubd - February 5, 2012
One for Rubio, two wide for Chavez.
ColtJouvet - February 5, 2012
At least the last two rounds helped make up for the first 10
Chavez round, not enough though on my card. 115-113 Rubio. Close fight that could go either way though.
Brickhaus - February 5, 2012
And by “could go”, you mean “we all know will go….”
schraubd - February 5, 2012
10-9 Chavez, 116-112 Rubio
Credit where it’s due, Chavez came out and took that last round.
Still, Rubio won that.
Verklemptomaniac - February 5, 2012
R12 JCC Jr

I’m going to guess the actual result is 118-110.
Bonkers - February 5, 2012
10-9 jcc, 114-114 draw
OmarLittle - February 5, 2012
I have Rubio winning, but i mean c’mon, it’s texas, it’s a close fight, and it’s jcc jr
Apprentice - February 5, 2012
I’m HOPING for 116-112 JCC, even though I had Rubio 115-113 myself, even with JCC Jr taking the 12th. Truth be told, neither of these fighters deserves a title.
El Destruyo - February 5, 2012
Not a hope in hell Rubio won this fight. I could take 115-113 for Chavez, though. A lot of those rounds depended on what you thought mattered.
Scott Christ - February 5, 2012
115-114 Rubio. Gave the 11th even. Judging by HBO’s horrible announcing, and Lederman’s horrible scorecard. Chavez is winning big.
TheDemolitionDan - February 5, 2012 via iPhone app
118-110. We’re done.
El Destruyo - February 5, 2012
we all saw that coming!
Sammlung - February 5, 2012
I got one of the cards right-118-110.
Bonkers - February 5, 2012
118-110
116-112
115-113
Julio Cesar Chavez Jr by unanimous decision
Still WBC middleweight titlist
Scott Christ - February 5, 2012
That wasn't a 118-110 fight
But I’ll believe the other two scores.
AndrewDM - February 5, 2012
115-113 for Chavez is not outrageous
Apprentice - February 5, 2012
Two reasonable cards, and one predictably ridiculous card.
Verklemptomaniac - February 5, 2012
Yep. And with open scoring, Rubio knew what he had to do, ridiculous as this all is.
El Destruyo - February 5, 2012
except for a KO, there was nothing he could do
Apprentice - February 5, 2012
and you know, he wasn’t going to KO mammoth 181 Jr
Apprentice - February 5, 2012
That’s the one that they always fill out before the fight for Chavez
Apprentice - February 5, 2012
There was a horrible score on both fights tonight
Texas sucks
cardscott5 - February 5, 2012
Rubio just seemed totally disinterested while the cards were being announced. Sad
ColtJouvet - February 5, 2012
He said it before the fight
He knew he had no shot of winning a decision
Verklemptomaniac - February 5, 2012
he said he had to knock him out…
Sammlung - February 5, 2012
Its a shame that he fought the wrong fight for a finish
ColtJouvet - February 5, 2012
Crowd booing Chavez, it sounds like.
Verklemptomaniac - February 5, 2012
The fans boo JCC Jr. Or Larry, one or the other.
Bonkers - February 5, 2012
Maybe they're just booing the Tecate girl for not giving her enormous fake breasts an encore
Optimism!
parlagi - February 5, 2012
What a shocker.
TheDemolitionDan - February 5, 2012 via iPhone app
Yeah, don’t think Bob Arum is gonna say “let’s go”
OmarLittle - February 5, 2012
“i want martinez, margarito, and cotto.” aka “i’m going to fight margarito and then cotto, and stay as far away from martinez as possible”
battle axe of doom - February 5, 2012
My mother who is visiting me said the same thing.
Vanity - February 5, 2012
JCC wants Martinez. Yes, let’s make that fight happen.
Bonkers - February 5, 2012
well thats after Margarito and Cotto lol
Sammlung - February 5, 2012
And probably 6 dudes from Europe as well. just to be safe.
Bonkers - February 5, 2012
Theyre not booing, theyre saying boo-urns, boo-urns
El Presidente - February 5, 2012
HBO commentary gets worse and worse every fight. Jim Lampley’s boxing knowledge is regressing every time he commentates, he doesn’t even pretend to do blow-by-blow anymore. I swear he calls the fight solely on compubox statistics since it seems he can’t go two minutes without citing some stat or other.
theninthlayer - February 5, 2012
Too bad Martinez didn’t walk up have a contract in his hand and make him sign it on the spot.
TheDemolitionDan - February 5, 2012 via iPhone app
i wish Martinez would do something like that to build more hype for the fight… a la Mosley-Mayweather.
Vartanyan - February 5, 2012
I dont see Cotto against Jr, especially since he isnt with Top Rank anymore
El Presidente - February 5, 2012
Cotto’s probably coming back to Top Rank after the Mayweather fight. I suppose I could see why some people might want to match Cotto and Chavez, but Miguel is nuts if he takes a fight against a guy who’s naturally 25 lbs heavier than he is.
