Tonight at 10 p.m. EST, HBO goes live with the network's first boxing show of 2012, a double-header featuring a pair of title fights.

In the main event, WBC middleweight titlist Julio Cesar Chavez Jr (44-0-1, 31 KO) defends against Marco Antonio Rubio (53-5-1, 46 KO) in a 12-round bout. Chavez is making the second defense of the title he won from Sebastian Zbik last June, following a win over Peter Manfredo Jr in November.

The co-feature will decide the vacant WBO super bantamweight title. Nonito Donaire (27-1, 18 KO) is back in action in his first fight at 122 pounds, facing ex-titlist Wilfredo Vazquez Jr (21-1-1, 18 KO) in another 12-round bout. Donaire is looking to pick up a title belt in a third weight class, following titles at 112 and 118 (he won only an interim belt in his stopover at 115).

These two fights will conclude a long day of live coverage here at Bad Left Hook, so join us as we wrap up our first really big weekend of fights this year.

finally got a day off to watch a fight, and i find out we dont get hbo any more. life. at least i have blh.

I just moved and haven't gotten the TV hooked up yet...

I’m in the same boat…

earlier I was half way through watching the Quigg fight

But then as there was snow on the dish there was no freakin satelite signal…..

terrible fate. at the very least i can mine the internet for a capped video.

Thats what I had to resort to

Who you got for tonight?

Im thinking of changing my Chavez by dec for Rubio because of Jr being tight at the weight and the supposed Drink Driving charges

i’m rooting for rubio to notch another upset stoppage here. i dunno a whole lot about him, but if he bides his time like he did with lemieux and looks for the right spot to attack he might pull something off. only because Jr is so unspectacular. Jr’ll prolly get the dec. though.

it’s early in England………got your fish and chips and guinness ready?

Rumors that WV2 fainted or some shit. Steve Kim says not true.

FrontRow also went down sometime in the last 2 weeks or so I guess… Sucks. I’ll still catch the main event, but maybe not all of it because I work at midnight EST.

what’s on HBO right now? ring life?

“2 Days” – new thing. They’re gonna do one on Kirkland before the 3/24 fight too.

i missed most of it, but it looks interesting. very fortunate that they chose to start this off with bam bam and his weight issues

That was a great quasi show of Brandon Rios… I hope they make it a staple on HBO now.

about time. i got rubio via TKO 10, and nonito via TKO 8

AND WE’RE LIVE!

god nonito looks like a douche, but i can’t help but root for the guy.

JCC demonstrated against Manfredo that he can beat a game B- fighter who is past his prime and way smaller than him. That’s “volumes”, I guess.

who the fuck told lampley that those glasses were a good idea

Where the hell did Lampley get those glasses?

Holy shit look at Jim Lampley’s fucking hipster glasses

Wow at those glasses

Jim Lampley looks like a 29 year old girl who’s really into Camera Obscura

C'mon Lampley...

Did Angelo Dundee wear those glasses or something?

You know, I’ll spot Lampley the “one punch knockout of Montiel”. It really should have been — that fight had no business continuing another second after Donaire put Montiel down with that shot.

sc’s favorite rapper, EMINEM. representin’ detroit

Server issues. We’ll do our best. If we go down bad, follow on Twitter.

lol @ the oscar de la hoya pic in your image gallery thing

professional boxter!

best thing to ever have been uploaded on youtube

Vasquez coming in with a Mexican flag! Interesting…

I’m glad to see that, though I’d be interested to know why

san antonio(and texas in general) is full of mexicans. us latinos gotta stick together, mate

Well, yeah, but I mean it’s the first time I’ve seen that. I’m glad to see it though. I like it.

San antonio is fuckin northern mexico

Vasquez going for the Mick Foley cheap pop.

Donaire came in first

Buncey just said theres a bookies offering Donaire before the eighth at evens tonight. Wish I could find it

Man I hope wv2 has a good showing here

Donaire has almost NO muscle definition lol

yeah he didn’t look particularly good in the weigh in

i don’t remember him being ripped in the narvaez fight either

He’s not a muscular ripped dude, ever

pretty much. he’s all bones.

nice to see him in there with someone not dwarfed in size…

Teh Internetz are fighting me. I think I’ve won for now.

wv2’s trunks look pretty high up. only round 1 but wv2 doens’t look like the “easy win” that everyone expected

Donaire vs Vazquez Round 1

First minute is tentative, both flicking their jabs. Right hand Donaire is blocked by Vazquez’s elbow. Donaire fires a left hook, doesn’t get there. Donaire throwing, not landing. Vazquez not throwing anything, or in the words of Emanuel, “Vazquez hasn’t did anythin yet.”

Donaire looking for the power shots, but not finding the target yet. Uppercut misses, right hand misses. Left hook counter from Donaire does land. Not big, but got there.

Donaire 10-9

10-9 Donaire. Vasquez did essentially nothing.

hopefully, warming up……………….hopefully

10-9 Donaire

Vasquez looks gunshy.

I want to like Donaire. There’s just something entitled abut him that makes me want to see him get his ass kicked

I know what you mean

he’s definitely a cocky little shit, but ehh it doesn’t bother me if he backs it up like he did against montiel

yes he bothers me as well, but I love freakishly fast fighters.

im a decently big donaire fan, but on some level im with you. too much sideline drama in his career.

i’ve been watching him on cheap ppvs for years, he always wins, he always bugs me.

I do approve of Donaire smacking Vasquez as the latter tried to mug and play the “didn’t hurt me” ame.

R1-Donaire

10-9 Donaire

Not much going on so far.

Donaire vs Vazquez Round 2

Every time Vazquez does open up, Donaire fires back. Donaire slips, and then Donaire is all mad about something. Donaire really wants that left uppercut followed by the straight right hand. Vazquez just jabbing here and there, pretty much nothing else.

Left to the body by Donaire. Donaire’s face reddening up a little bit. Little mouse under his right eye. Man, Vazquez still hasn’t did anythin yet. Left hook body by Donaire, heads almost come together. Vazquez short on a right hand.

Donaire 10-9
Donaire 20-18

10-9, 20-18 Donaire.

Boring fight so far. Vazquez might be intimidated

Wv2 better land something soon

R2 Donaire, 20-18 same

Is Vazquez normally this slow in starting?

Donaire is really sitting down on his punches. Maybe a little too focused on the KO (though he’s winning handily and Vasquez looks a little gunshy).

I guess the HBO guys are taking the round off?

lot of silence

WV2 has tagged him with some solid jabs

With nothing behind them

marking Nonito’s face up a little

so?

do a little damage……..it sometimes can add up. Probably not…….but…

nonito acting a fool right now.

Donaire is headhunting hard. Go to the body already!

What the hell is going on?

Donaire vs Vazquez Round 3

Wow. Vazquez is doing absolutely nothing in there and this sucks. Donaire trying to taunt him into throwing, it’s not working.

Left hook stings Vazquez! DONAIRE GOING FOR THE KILL IN THE CORNER! Vazquez, just like against Arce, has no idea what to do. Out of the corner, now on the ropes. Vazquez swings wildly and badly misses a left hook and falls on his ass.

Great body hook from Donaire. He’s clowning Vazquez.

Donaire 10-9
Donaire 30-27

Donaire 10-9, 30-27. Rightly or wrongly, he doesn’t think Vasquez is in his league, and is looking to bomb him out.

10-9 Donaire, 30-27

Donaire is angry. The body was wide open there in the corner.

definitely should have went to the body

too much speed for Vazquez, totally flustered.

R3 Donaire

30-27 Donaire

Vazquez looks discombobulated.

Okay Harold, that was not a 10-8 round. Or even close to it.

hype job topic of the day: donaire’s power and chavez jr being the son of chavez sr

I love Harold. “He did a monkey imitation, then hit him with a bullshit left hook!”

funniest thing ive read all fucking week. good job harold.

I love that qoute… I hope when someone does a year end recap they include that clip.

Well. This is boring.

10-9, 40-36 Donaire.

I think WV2 is bleeding from somewhere, but I can’t specific location

R4 Donaire

40-36 Donaire

Donaire vs Vazquez Round 4

Donaire is starting to fight goofy, angry maybe. Lederman gave him a 10-8 last round, but I don’t think he did near enough damage for that. Just my opinion.

Vazquez’s jab is landing. Donaire seems unconcerned. Uppercut from Donaire cracks him good. Body shot from Donaire. As soon as Vazquez starts throwing punches, he’s getting creamed. San Antonio crowd not thrilled with this fight. Is anyone?

Donaire is obsessed with a one-punch KO here. Right hand from Vazquez clips Donaire, but then a Donaire hook clips Vazquez.

Donaire 10-9
Donaire 40-36

Donaire is obsessed with a one-punch KO here

I know just put your punches together dammit

San Antonio would go crazy for a Brandon Rios type of.fight

the crowd sounds awesome at the end of each round with the bullshit “stare downs”. they would go crazy with an actual fight in the ring

i hate that goddamn Filipino flash cap

Vazquez trying to intimidate the guy kicking his ass…

Well, I hope Rubio doesn’t crap the fight like he did against Pavlik because this is going to be a bad WCB

i told my dad to stay up for this crap. poor pops…

trying to catch him with the same counter lt hook he caught montiel

10-9, 50-45 Donaire. Better round for Vasquez, but not better enough.

Donaire vs Vazquez Round 5

Right hand from Vazquez about halfway into the round after they continue to “feel each other out.” Vazquez with a jab. Donaire is playing around in there. Donaire with a good shot. Right hand to the gut from Donaire. Donaire is just so focused on that counter left hook. It’s a great punch, but let it happen.

Donaire 10-9
Donaire 50-45

Vazquez did much better this round, but he still lost it.

Vazquez landed some hard shots that round

He should try to him up and rough him up… he’s to slow for Donaire

R5-Donaire
50-45 Same

oh shit wv2 is starting to pick it up

Wv2 is not throwing punches that could damage donaire even if they landed

Vasquez 10-9, 59-55 Donaire

Huh, Vazquez suddenly wakes up

Donaire vs Vazquez Round 6

Vazquez making somewhat more confident pushes on offense. Left hook from Vazquez. He’s picking off Donaire’s shots a bit more. Donaire might be getting a bit predictable. Donaire goes southpaw, because it worked so great against midget Tyson Marquez. That doesn’t last. Vazquez’s jab starting to become a real weapon now. Donaire’s jab isn’t there. Donaire’s defense too slick for WV2’s power shots to land though.

Vazquez 10-9
Donaire 59-55

R6 WV2

59-55 Donaire

Donaire needs to open up and just attack at this point. He’s letting WV2 come back into this.

Donaire is not boxing well here despite being ahead.
He needs something pretty emphatic to put a shone on this

has donaire ever been in an exciting fight? by exciting i mean a war, not exciting as in his scintillating KO’s

not that I know of

And HBO’s crew just gives up on displaying energy, and let Robert Garcia take it for a little bit.

fun to see though. Certainly more fun than HBO

Vazquez looking a lot better now

Donaire 10-9, 69-64 same.

Vazquez making this interesting!

Donaire vs Vazquez Round 7

Vazquez still jabbing. Donaire with an overhand right, caught a lot of glove. Vazquez with a left to the body. Donaire throwing power shots almost exclusively at this point. Vazquez with another left to the body.

PICTURE IN PICTURE OF THE TRAINER? Jesus Christ. Donaire with a low blow then acts like it wasn’t.

well that was an awful experiment. Let’s not do that again.

Donaire with a left hook. WV2 felt that one a little bit. Close-ish round.

Donaire 10-9
Donaire 69-64

3 rounds in a row for Vazquez

R7 Donaire

69-65 Donaire

Garcia just sprayed water up Donaire’s nose.

anyone else notice donaire doing the khan push off more than a few time?

Vazquez hitting and not getting hit well

Donaire frustrated that Vazquez not letting him hit him at will…

crowd booing donaire’s dumb ass

yes, that was retarded…

Donaire 10-9, 79-73 same

Donaire vs Vazquez Round 8

One gets the feeling that Donaire’s version of “excitement” is “guy who makes it easy for him to land scintillating punches.”

Right hand and left to the body from Donaire. Vazquez to the body, but he eats an uppercut. WV2 with a jab. Body shot Vazquez. Right hand Donaire. Picking up here for a moment. Donaire still badly wants that counter left. He loves guys who walk into his counter left.

Donaire with some pure show-boating, not well-received by the crowd at all. Didn’t read his audience, I guess.

Donaire 10-9
Donaire 79-73

Roy joneseque. Except more boring.

R8 Donaire

79-73 (I gave Vazquez 10 pts last round inadvertently and am correcting it here.)

4 in a row i given Vazquez

was just about to say that this fight sucks, and down goes vasquez

fight still sucks, but hey there was a knockdown!

Donaire vs Vazquez Round 9

Vazquez has stayed in this without threatening to win the fight even a little bit. Heavy right hand from Donaire. WICKED left uppercut from Donaire, then a left hook and Vazquez goes down!

Vazquez smiles, but he got ripped there. That was some serious Filipino Flash there. Donaire not pressing, Vazquez’s legs not in bad shape, fight carries on.

Donaire 10-8
Donaire 89-81

R9 Donaire 10-8

89-81 Donaire

Vazquez got a little careless and paid for it

10-8, 89-81 Donaire. Shame — Vasquez was winning that round too.

I think Rigandeoux beats this iteration of Donaire. Thoughts?

yes, there’s no way in hell they’ll go anywhere near him…

If Vazquez were faster, he could be winning this fight… as slow as he looks, he’s done some good work

Flash-y ending there.

yeah that was pretty impressive. now if only he did that for all three minutes of every round…

10-9 Vasquez, 98-91 Donaire

Donaire vs Vazquez Round 10

Vazquez might as well go for broke. He’s not going to win fighting this fight.

Right hand from WV2, and now he puts Donaire on the ropes. Vazquez throwing punches, so he’s going for it with this chance. Donaire looking for power shots off the ropes. Little left catches Donaire, but he escapes without taking much.

Stiff jab from Vazquez. Right hand Vazquez, but the left hook came back from Donaire. Lead right from WV2. He’s not just surviving. There’s another lead right from Vazquez. Donaire jumping around throwing punches now.

Vazquez 10-9
Donaire 98-91

R10 WV2

98-91 Donaire

Donaire vs Vazquez Round 11

Vazquez crowding him early in this round, and Donaire throwing punches in close quarters. Left hand and a right behind it from Donaire. Slapping hook from Donaire. Heads come together and they both take a break for a second.

Jab from Vazquez. Another jab. Two jabs from Donaire. right hand Vazquez, not a clean land. Donaire using his jab pretty nicely right now. Vazquez swings and misses on a hook.

Donaire 10-9
Donaire 108-100

10-9, 108-100 Donaire

If nothing else, this is a good reminder that it’s never easy to move up in weight, no matter how big you are in your previous division. Also, Donaire-Rigondeaux looks like a tougher pick than ever.

(not that it’s happening)

No one want to fight Rigo

goddamnit steward i’m tired of you saying vaskwez. even hundred year old merchant can say vaskez

Robert Garcia’s did a fantastic job

Gamboa would destroy this Donaire

not even close

what’s not even close?

Gamboa-Donaire. Gamboa would wreck him.

ah yes, I wasn’t sure if you were agreeing with me or not

Donaire doesn’t look special at this weight at least to me or maybe Vasquez is better than I thought he was…

WV2 is a good fighter

Yeah, Vazquez looked better than I thought

I dont know with that.. but the fight would sure interests me..

Did Manny just say he's training Gamboa?
Donaire vs Vazquez Round 12

Donaire coming out dancing and staying away. Right to the body by Donaire. Sure enough, just as Gabe Montoya predicted rounds ago, the excuses are starting: Donaire supposedly has hurt his right hand. Vazquez having a nice closing part of this round and taking it for me.

Vazquez 10-9
Donaire 117-110

10-9 Vasquez, 117-110 Donaire

Fun ending. Vazquez plainly lost, but won some cred on the way.

Nice to see them making up after the fight.

I like Lederman actually talking about the judges

Rachel looks a lot more … delicate, if I can put it that way, than I remember. For someone who could kick all of our asses six ways to Sunday, it’s a little odd.

Wow, that hand looks like it's in pretty bad shape

yeah what’s up with that, jesus

lol a split decision?

In the “styles make fights” spirit, however, I have to say, Donaire-Arce will be/would still be a mismatch.

wth was that Vazquez scorecard

Donaire vs Vazquez - JUDGES SCORES

115-112 Vazquez
117-110 Donaire
117-110 Donaire

Nonito Donaire by unanimous decision
New WBO super bantamweight titlist

so basically one judge gave WV2 8 rds……………wow

There has to be a fuck up…

wow split decision

what the hell was that judge smoking

There is no reason this should have split at all, by the way. Sorry, I don’t see how anyone can see that. Bye bye, “Doctor” Garcia.

What the hell was that judge watching? Good lord.

Can we ask Harold about that judge NOW?

115-112 is Vasquez eight rounds to four. For serious?

split??? umm, i don’t think doctor garcia took his meds this morning.

Well, we have an early contender for worst scorecard of the year.

At least it’s scorecard and not decision

British feed seems to believe this is a WBO/Puerto Rican bias matter. I don’t know about that, but I have no better explanation.

his index finger looks like shit

There gotta be a compound fracture under there

It really did look it. Gives some context to this fight, and, as always, a future question mark to Donaire.

i wanna see it.. hope scott will provide a picture..

so it's not AN EXCUSE . . . after all

oh shit… look at that hand

If it’s bleeding, that’s probably a compound fracture.

Jr looks huge next to his old man

Nonito is the Filipino Mayweather.

Ummmm no. Unless this is a reference to his broken hand.

yeah, i’m scratching my head a little bit at this too

I think Donaire is a great fighter, but he still has a lot to prove to be at that level

Let me rephrase that...

Nonito is the Filipino Money Mayweather

thx for rephrasing

he is quite arrogant if that’s what you mean.

I’m still scratching my head though… “Money” Mayweather is hyperbolic…

Not feeling this comparison at all.

i know what i’m not going to watch on thursday, february 9th

i prefer watching donaire in a fight like this rather than watching him knocking out mismatched opponents.

I bet the guy at Moscot told Jim those glasses were spectaaaaculah

I didn’t see the fight, but Donaire always fights up to the level of his opponent. That’s my observation…

wow merchant showing actual human feelings.

Ha ha. No doubt, I was just thinking the same thing.

Wow, those glasses are really bad

Wasting the intermission away with Pulp Fiction. Fortunately, it just started and is still in the opening montage.

Jr looks like a kid really

that was NOT what chavez said. olaya sucks

Olaya is horrible, I loathe him

I liked Ray Torres better

what was he saying?……..just the gist

everyone wants to see another chavez sr, but people need to realize that he’s an entirely different person.

JCC Jr actually looks a lot like a kid I knew in high school. He was rich, and his father was a politician, and it all just feels like history repeating itself in front of my eyes, personally.

Two things

1) I’m really surprised Jr. can’t speak English by now, coming up in his background

2) Junior is soooo much bigger than his dad, I question whether they’re actually related by blood.

Rafael recently said his English is getting better lately, but he’s still not fluent.

My dad said the same thing about point no.2, called Jr the milkman’s kid

I wonder if it's like a Cotto situation

where he doesn’t want to speak English until he’s good at it

Jr looks a lot like his dad in the face when his Sr. was young. different body

RUBIO! RUBIO! RUBIO!

damn Merchant and his analogies. they make NO sense whatsoever. What was all that about the IV and injecting his opponent?

Hemingway wouldn’t have approved that analogy.

You know that look people get when they start saying something that doesn’t make sense and they realize it but it’s too late to stop and you just finish it? That’s what Merchant looked like while he was trying to finish that Rubio Nursing bit

my thoughts exactly.

Jesus. Chavez at 181 tonight. Rubio 171.

Chavez at 181? Holy shit.

Look at it this way: Four pounds lighter than the Zbik fight.

rubio looks like he got a tan and put some cucumbers on his eyes

I think he has that skin condition Michael Jackson claims to have had

according to the autopsy, Michael Jackson was telling the truth… but I think he got one of his doctor buddies to like speed it up or something

that’s pretty disturbing

oh shit sorry. i’ve never seen him like that before. even his hbo mugshot doesn’t look like that

This is what he has: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vitiligo

yeah i can see it on his back now. never noticed it before, i take back my original post

This is actually more noticeable than I remember it being before — brighter, I guess?

PLEASE RUBIO DON’T CRAP IT LIKE YOU DID AGAINST PAVLIK

he better fight like it’s his last chance………..b/c it might be

“We didn’t want to interfere with the competition.”

Sure Jim. Whatever you say.

Also-Rubio looks pissed on the walk-in.

JCC Jr looks pale/high.

Just actually occurred to me that this was the Alamodome. Whatever happens tonight, then, I hope for no repeat of Whitaker- JCC Sr’s ending.

Remember the Alamodome

What you did there, I see it.

Haha, I like that little bow the ref just took

Never a good sign when the ref looks more excited to be there than the fighters, LOL.

hahaha yes, he looks like it’s his first time on tv ever

Rubio should have shaved those chest hairs… I’m betting punches there will hurt extra

Rubio has the mustache that every guy in the Navy had in the 1980s.

My first thought was Freddy Mercury
Why do you think Freddy had one of those?
you're on fire

but i’m pretty sure every mexican from rubio’s generation has a stache like that

Chavez has a bare-knuckle fighter’s physique tonight. I don’t mean that as a compliment.

Chavez just dwarfs Rubio

Rubio has a tiny head

compared to Chavez’s massive grape…….yes

I'm not sure if it's a pity round

But I gave that one to Rubio.

10-9 Rubio. The definition of nicking a round, because not too much happened there.

Chavez needs to pressure Rubio.

Chavez vs Rubio Round 1

Well, Rubio is coming out moving his hands, so he’s not gonna wait for the kid, it wouldn’t appear.

Left to the body from Rubio. Overhand right from Chavez, not a lot on it. Jab from Rubio. Chavez is huge compared to Rubio, just as Pavlik was. Rubio is really a 154 guy. As Emanuel would say, just like I was sayin’ before.

Chavez jabbing a little bit now. Body shot from Chavez, and a good one. That’s his meal ticket. Rubio to the body, a bit low, and Rubio acknowledges the quick warning. Chavez slips a jab. right hand by Rubio, but doesn’t sting Chavez. Chavez keeping distance this round, doesn’t look too concerned with throwing a ton just yet.

Chavez 10-9

Between here and Twitter first round was about 75-25 for Rubio it would appear. He was more active.

10-9 Rubio

Not much happening, but Rubio is moving forward and doesn’t look intimidated.

R1 Rubio

10-9

I’ve figured out why JCC Jr looks so young-it’s the lack of effective facial hair. Being matched against Rubio doesn’t help.

True, Rubio looks ancient

Yeah, and Jr looks like he’s about ready for his father to teach him to shave for the first time.

rubio chant?!?

I heard it!

I didn’t, but I did hear some dude yell, “Canelo!”

10-9 Chavez, 19-19

Chavez vs Rubio Round 2

Left to the body by Chavez. Rubio coming to him, Chavez sort of staying away. Chavez with a jab but misses a long right. Chavez muscles him to the corner, then does nothing, Rubio gets out. I think that’s a “Rubio” chant. He does have his fans here.

Very slow round here. Jab from Rubio. Jab from Chavez clips him. Little body shot from Rubio. Body shot that time, little shot upstairs after. Chavez with a right, but mostly misses it.

Rubio 10-9
19-19

20-18 Rubio

But 20-18 the other way wouldn’t be unreasonably. I find it amusing how Jim and Manny make it sound like Chavez is dominating.

They did the same thing during the Zbik fight, though I believe it was RJJ instead of Manny

bet the judges have it 2-0 chavez………..close rds go to jr

20-18 Rubio, I guess; JCC seemed to really come up with very little clean in this second round, and Rubio did some nice interior work and a couple good jabs. Huh. I came to a fight, and a boxing match broke out.

I'm hoping so much right now that Rubio can take out two hypejobs in a row

Chavez really leading with his head…

Rubio doesn’t look comfortable on the inside

Chavez's punches are so much louder

They are. I’m not sure how much that relates to heaviness, but judges can’t gauge heaviness.

Two things

1) Unlike the Pavlik fight, Rubio is here to compete. Whether he wins (or even deserves to) is another question, but it’s a good thing.

2) I already have a feeling that Rubio was right to protest this ref. Just a sentiment that he’s leaning a little harder on Rubio than Chavez

10-9 jcc, 29-28 Rubio

Chavez vs Rubio Round 3

Chavez with a left hook, blinding right, left to the body. They’re getting close, and that favors Chavez and his body weight + physical strength. Rubio getting muscled this round for sure. Two shots from Rubio, but Chavez fires back. Little left inside from Chavez. This is becoming a phone booth fight if JCC can help it. Blocking a lot of Rubio’s shots. Left hook from Rubio to the body, sort of slapping. Chavez coming straight in, head first.

Right hand from Chavez. Rubio looking for uppercuts, not finding them. Chavez with some heavy shots. Left hook rom Chavez, and now Rubio lands but gets backed down at the same time.

Chavez 10-9
Chavez 29-28

10-9 Chavez, 29-28 same. Difference is that Chavez is massively bigger and stronger, and his punches are landing with more effect.

29-28 Rubio

Jr round, but this also could have gone either way

10-9 JCCJr, 29-28 Rubio

To the Tecate girl: You should show them off: you payed well for them.

R3 Jr

29-28 Jr

All three of these rounds are close.

29-28 Rubio, R3 to Chavez. Rubio is going to have to land big at some point, what with the problems with getting a decision and all.

Col. Bob Sheridan is much less insane fun ever since stopped letting him be a one-man booth.

10-9 Rubio, 39-37 same

Chavez vs Rubio Round 3

Chavez continues to crowd him. Rubio is the one throwing punches, though. Chavez is just sort of getting there and not doing anything with it this round. Jab from Chavez. He doesn’t have a lot of steam on anything but his left hook tonight. Right hand is blocked by Rubio. Round continuing that way — Chavez getting there, Rubio throwing the punches. Not big punches, but it’s something. Chavez’s punches being largely blocked again. Right hand from Rubio gets in. Rubio warned about straying low again, I think. It was barely low if at all. Rubio coming forward in the final seconds.

Rubio 10-9
38-38

10-9 Rubio, 38-38. “We lay off the action because Rubio is winning the round, but not in an exciting enough way so that we feel forced to admit it and change our narrative of the fight.”

I love that the commentators aren't talking

Anyway, I gave that one to Rubio again, 39-37 Rubio

not sure if it’s just the boring ass fight that preceded it, but this fight is pretty rockin’

10-9 Rubio, 39-37 Rubio

Rubio doing better in close now. Not landing hard shots, but touching him up.

Some girls somewhere are starting to get a Jul-IO chant going. Without much luck.

Also-the HBO crew is at Purple Drank energy level for tonight. Unfortunately.

R4-Rubio

38-38

Even fight. Which surely means 4-0 JCC on at least two judges’ cards.

And 6 to negative 1 for JCC on the other.

Was that actually a low blow?

Dunno. The one he warned him for last round wasn’t.

I don’t think Rubio can win this fight… he’s obviously not going to KO him and he’s not going to win a decision…

Buncha loud, not especially effective combinations by JCC here. Loud, if largely useless, but Rubio is not doing enough to counter the noise. I’ve got a sinking feeling here.

Chavez vs Rubio Round 5

Chavez corners him again and this time throws the body shots. Rubio throwing back. Rubio giving about as good as he’s getting here but it’s “Rubio whaling away” says Jim. Rubio strays low yet again, and Chavez takes true exception this time. Don’t know if that was low either.

Good counter right from Chavez when they get back to action. Rubio pushed to the corner again, and Chavez again just putting him where he wants him, but now throwing the punches. Not his usual big attack when he gets those chances, but enough considering Rubio isn’t doing a lot either. Rubio jabbing, misses a right. Chavez slipping Rubio’s punches fairly well so far tonight.

Chavez 10-9
Chavez 48-47

10-9 Chavez, 48-47 same. Want to see a replay on the low blow.

Chavez round for me

But again I could see it going either way. But Chavez did land a couple very god punches that round. 48-47 Rubio

10-9 Chavez, 48-47 Rubio

R5 Jr

48-47 Jr

10-9 Chavez, 48-47 Rubio

Merchant asked JR if this was his last fight at this weight and he said no emphatically… it’s because he knows he won’t be able to bully bigger fighters like this

like he’s doing here I meant

Okay, that one was definitely low.

The way Merchant talks about Jr

You’d think he wants Jr. to become the first Mexican heavyweight champ or something.

Random thought

Floyd Mayweather has longer arms than both of these guys.

i’m afraid SC’s right, rubio’s power has been completely overrated. rubio simply can’t knock chavez out

I think completely overrated is a bit much

But no, he’s not going to knock out a cruiserweight.

well according to his record only 7 dudes have gone the distance with rubio in all of his victories. maybe not completely overrated, but yeah not going to happen

yeah it doesn’t seem like it that’s for sure.

Rubio raises his fist….to display how badly he gave that round away at the end. Good job.

10-9 Rubio, 58-56 Rubio
lampley talking about open scoring

let’s see if he goes insane like that one time that i can’t remember

bang bang bang?

no that OTHER time he went insane in which he spent the entire fight blasting the entire idea of open scoring. i can’t remember which fight it was, i’m pretty sure it was a boring ass fight. might have been taylor-spinks but i’m pretty sure i’m wrong on that one

I didnt think they did open scoring in the US

san antonio may be Baby Mexico, but it’s still in the US

10-9 Chavez, 58-56 same

10-9 Chavez, 57-57 even

Chavez vs Rubio Round 6

Heat turning up just a hair early in the round. Another low blow – that was actually low. Quick break, back to action. Chavez with a heavy combo, mostly blocked, but those punches were thrown with purpose. Chavez dancing a lot this round. Rubio not doing enough to pursue him either. Rubio jabbing a bit, but it’s not a big jab and not setting anything up. Chavez throwing big shots to end the round, not landing a ton.

Chavez 10-9
Chavez 58-56

Five to 1?? Well, that’s probably the official score anyways………

I don’t think it’s all that wild. Rubio hasn’t done anything special, neither has Chavez.

if neither has done anything special and it seems to be more even, 5 to 1 is a bit much to me

12 competitive rounds won by one guy is 12-0

true, i just don’t agree he’s won all rounds

R6 Chavez

58-56 Chavez

Even for me now

Side note: I really hate that I can’t watch this fight through the perspective of what I’m seeing, but rather, have to consider what a likely biased judge panel is seeing. It’s not like Rubio has even done well enough for this to be a massive deal, but I’m saying.

Rubio isn’t sitting down on his punches at all. He’s throwing and trying, but it’s all arms.

10-9 Rubio, 67-66 Chavez

Chavez vs Rubio Round 7

I don’t care for this fight. I feel comfortable saying that now. Chavez has been delivering good fights lately and I figured this would be the same, but just not a lot going here.

Me and Manny Steward know what’s up on Rubio’s punching power. Rubio threw a bunch this round, but he’s landing nothing of real significance and not bothering Chavez. Still, Chavez is doing so little in return that I give Rubio this round.

Rubio 10-9
Chavez 67-66

dammit

10-9 jcc, 67-66 same

R7 Rubio

67-66 Jr

Rubio again

So I have him 67-66.

Someday someone who can throw an uppercut with conviction will punish junior, but Rubio isn’t that guy. What the commentators seem to be missing is that Rubio has pretty much landed it at will.

The crowd is so thrilled they are doing the wave. That’s the only reason for all the noise right now, not this fight, there Jim.

And Larry calls Jim out on it.

Is the crowd excited or is the crowd just excited to do the wave? Also, when was the last time the wave was performed in a major boxing match?

Can anyone spot any beach balls being thrown around the crowd?

What if the beach ball gets in the ring?

Possibly the first obvious round of the fight. And it’s Rubio’s. Don’t let that ending fool you, little as JCCJr landed there.

Yeah, theres no way he landed 28 punches that round

10-9 JCC, 77-75 same

This fight isn’t all that bad

Chavez vs Rubio Round 8

Oh God, a wave. Go to hell, San Antonio.

Chavez muscling and bullying again. Right up on him. Rubio still out-throwing him constantly. Referee warns Chavez for using his elbow. Chavez throwing with Rubio on the ropes. A couple clean shots from Rubio.

Rubio 10-9
76-76

R8 Jr

77-75 Jr

10-9 Rubio, 76-76 even. No way those are the actual scores, of course. And frankly, if I had to edge the fight one way or the other, it’d be to Chavez. But there are rounds where Rubio is resoundingly outworking him, and I thought that was one.

10-9 Chavez, 77-75 Rubio

Chavez is available to be hit, and Rubio’s hitting him, but he’s not putting his body into the punches.

LET’S GO FOR EVERYTHING, BITCH!

JCC Sr looks kinda ridiculous with that head band… not that anybody looks particularly cool with those things

JCC, even when he was feared, was never cool.

JCC is starting to look tired.

It's devastating is a weird response to "He has a cool mustache."

Response to Merchant saying “Rubio isn’t a devastating boxer”

One thing you can’t take away from Chavez: that kid COMMITS to his punches. No pitty-pat arm stuff, usually.

yep

He also shows a nice commitment to body punching. So many guys abandon that after a few rounds, if they ever do it in the first place.

Sure

But like others have said, the second he actually steps in the ring with a dude who can throw an uppercut…not that he’ll ever do that though

Bingo

Been leading with that head all night, just BEGGING to be cracked by a good uppercut.

he arm punched throughout that one godawful fight on one of the pacman undercards. the fight in which he used the diarrhetic

That was the worst he’s ever been, by far.

R9 Rubio

86-85 Jr

Another close Rubio round for me

But what’s with Compubox today? When they kept live track, the Rubio guy missed half his punches.

10-9 Rubio, 86-85 JCC

Rubio round. Curious to see how well Jr. stands up through the rest of this.

WHAT THE FUCK IS SR DOING INSTRUCTING HIS SON?!

10-9 Rubio, 86-85. They’re tight rounds though. Very tight. And that’s bad for Rubio.

Chavez vs Rubio Round 9

Geez, this is a weird fight to watch. It’s like a fight on Ambien trying to stay awake. It looks kinda like it was supposed to, but it … doesn’t.

Rubio 10-9
Rubio 86-85

Jesus, Harold’s 8-1 card is horrible.

Once again, the Top Rank feed is better than HBO, in spite (and because of) the Colonel.

I seriously have a problem with Lederman’s scorecard… but I know that that’s probably what it’s going to look like

If the referee actually docks a point for JCCJr’s elbowing, I’ll drink the rest of this rye bottle in one swallow.

he really should, he’s been warned many times.

10-9 Chavez, 95-95

10-9 Rubio, 95-95

I know that the HBO crew is hardly ever on point, but the way they talk about this fight as though Chavez is beating up on Rubio is .just is so fucking tiresome.

R10 Rubio

95 All

10-9 Rubio, 97-93

I am under no illusions that this resembles the actual scorecards, but Rubio is winning this fight

No idea who won that round. Top Rank says Rubio, Lederman, I’m sure, says Chavez. Guess I’ll call it 10-10.

Chavez vs Rubio Round 10

Rubio has no power on his punches. Chavez isn’t doing enough. This is a bummer of a fight. Not terrible but just 100% forgettable.

Rubio with a little flurry, Chavez coming back. Right from Rubio, then Chavez makes some kind of…noise when Rubio pushes him back a bit. Rubio picking and pecking, Chavez wildly missing.

Rubio 10-9
Rubio 96-94

I feel bad for Rubio… he’s fighting well, but he needed to fight outstanding

I don’t think he’s fighting all that well at all. Neither of them are.

well, at least in context he is, after all, you and others here have him winning

Chavez round for me

96-94 Rubio

Okay, now I’m pissed off. JCC is not a cornerman.

JCC Jr. wings his hooks like Paul Newman in SOMEONE UP THERE LIKES ME, not like Rocky Graziano, but Paul Newman.

Wow. That’s sharp insight. And I do love that movie.

JCC was getting hurt there.

Chavez looked hurt for a second there

I think that woke him up a bit.

good trading in there

calm the fuck down lampley

God shut up Lampley

No Jim, thats not what I remember

10-9 Rubio, 105-104 Rubioooooooooo

Chavez vs Rubio Round 11

Rubio throwing, that wakes Chavez up a bit and he’s coming forward strong. Uppercut from Rubio, Chavez pushing him back but not actually landing punches is the thing. “Pushing to ropes” is good if you do something. It’s just pushing if you don’t.

Left to the body Chavez, little left upstairs Rubio. Right hand Rubio. Right hand Rubio. Left hook Chavez, right misses. Chavez throwing big, eye-catching punches, but not landing square. There’s a good left hook from Chavez. Crowd coming alive and Chavez is finally, legitimately landing some hard shots in close. All of a sudden it’s the fight I expected.

Chavez coming forward and Lampley has an orgasm and yet Rubio is…winning the round again. Now Lampley trying to explain his bias. He’s the worst.

Rubio cracks him again, Lampley says nothing.

Rubio 10-9
Rubio 106-103

I’m curious, since I’m off this feed: how did Lampley try to explain his bias?

Wish that round went another 20 seconds.

“The problem is that Rubio thinks he’s winning the fight”

good grief.

10-9, 105-104 Rubio. What I remember about that round, Jim, is Rubio digging deep, matching Chavez shot-for-shot, and taking the round.

Hey, a fight broke out there for a minute

106-103 Rubio

R11 Rubio

Best round of the night for either guy.

105-104 Rubio

10-9 Rubio, 107-102

I don;t know what the hell Lampley is watching. Rubio was landing good, solid hooks all round.

Not watching but I’m calling 119-109 Chavez.

Gus Johnson thinks Lampley needs to tone it down a little

Chavez's eye looks really bad

Ladies and gentlemen, prepare for some insulting scorecards.

I wish there was some kind of old-timey radio station that called fights live so that I could mute this garbage and listen to a more reasonable call of the fight.

Chavez vs Rubio Round 12

Rubio landing shots again to start the round. RAGING BULL!!!!! CHAVEZ!!!!!!!

Chavez with a flurry. Man he’s landing none of that clean. Chavez with a left hook. Good body shots from Chavez. Rubio digging in. These last two rounds have been terrific. This is my favorite type of fighting. Rugged, gritty, close quarters.

Hands just flying. Rubio landing a big right hand. Chavez really is fighting his ass off this round, and so is Rubio. Good final two rounds.

Chavez 10-9
Rubio 115-113

10-9 Chavez, 114-114 even

One for Rubio, two wide for Chavez.

At least the last two rounds helped make up for the first 10

Chavez round, not enough though on my card. 115-113 Rubio. Close fight that could go either way though.

And by “could go”, you mean “we all know will go….”

10-9 Chavez, 116-112 Rubio

Credit where it’s due, Chavez came out and took that last round.

Still, Rubio won that.

R12 JCC Jr

114 All

I’m going to guess the actual result is 118-110.

10-9 jcc, 114-114 draw

I have Rubio winning, but i mean c’mon, it’s texas, it’s a close fight, and it’s jcc jr

I’m HOPING for 116-112 JCC, even though I had Rubio 115-113 myself, even with JCC Jr taking the 12th. Truth be told, neither of these fighters deserves a title.

Not a hope in hell Rubio won this fight. I could take 115-113 for Chavez, though. A lot of those rounds depended on what you thought mattered.

115-114 Rubio. Gave the 11th even. Judging by HBO’s horrible announcing, and Lederman’s horrible scorecard. Chavez is winning big.

118-110. We’re done.

we all saw that coming!

I got one of the cards right-118-110.

118-110
116-112
115-113

Julio Cesar Chavez Jr by unanimous decision
Still WBC middleweight titlist

That wasn't a 118-110 fight

But I’ll believe the other two scores.

115-113 for Chavez is not outrageous

Two reasonable cards, and one predictably ridiculous card.

Yep. And with open scoring, Rubio knew what he had to do, ridiculous as this all is.

except for a KO, there was nothing he could do

and you know, he wasn’t going to KO mammoth 181 Jr

That’s the one that they always fill out before the fight for Chavez

There was a horrible score on both fights tonight

Texas sucks

Rubio just seemed totally disinterested while the cards were being announced. Sad

He said it before the fight

He knew he had no shot of winning a decision

he said he had to knock him out…

Its a shame that he fought the wrong fight for a finish

Crowd booing Chavez, it sounds like.

The fans boo JCC Jr. Or Larry, one or the other.

Maybe they're just booing the Tecate girl for not giving her enormous fake breasts an encore

Optimism!

What a shocker.

Yeah, don’t think Bob Arum is gonna say “let’s go”

“i want martinez, margarito, and cotto.” aka “i’m going to fight margarito and then cotto, and stay as far away from martinez as possible”

My mother who is visiting me said the same thing.

JCC wants Martinez. Yes, let’s make that fight happen.

well thats after Margarito and Cotto lol

And probably 6 dudes from Europe as well. just to be safe.

Theyre not booing, theyre saying boo-urns, boo-urns

HBO commentary gets worse and worse every fight. Jim Lampley’s boxing knowledge is regressing every time he commentates, he doesn’t even pretend to do blow-by-blow anymore. I swear he calls the fight solely on compubox statistics since it seems he can’t go two minutes without citing some stat or other.

Too bad Martinez didn’t walk up have a contract in his hand and make him sign it on the spot.

i wish Martinez would do something like that to build more hype for the fight… a la Mosley-Mayweather.

I dont see Cotto against Jr, especially since he isnt with Top Rank anymore

Cotto’s probably coming back to Top Rank after the Mayweather fight. I suppose I could see why some people might want to match Cotto and Chavez, but Miguel is nuts if he takes a fight against a guy who’s naturally 25 lbs heavier than he is.
