Manny Pacquiao has signed up for a dangerous bout with Timothy Bradley on June 9. (Photo by Ethan Miller/Getty Images)
Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather Jr are, as always, at the forefront of basically all boxing discussion. Though the two pound-for-pound standouts won't be facing one another, they have both signed up for fights that have a lot of people talking, and do present some challenge.
So what's the better fight? Which one are you most looking forward to?
Pacquiao's Challenges
(Photos by Ethan Miller/Getty Images)
Timothy Bradley is a really, really good fighter, the best 140-pound fighter in the world.
Bradley is clever, and not on paper tailor-made for Manny. He's not a plodder and he's not easy to hit.
Bradley isn't afraid to make a fight ugly, and he's good at doing so. Manny's not an ugly fight kind of guy.
Bradley, at 28, is absolutely in his prime years. He's a guy who stays in phenomenal shape year-round and is always ready to fight.
The risk-reward isn't equal here. Bradley's no superstar.
Mayweather's Challenges
(Photos by Ethan Miller and Al Bello/Getty Images)
Miguel Cotto is still a very good fighter, and his limited work with Pedro Diaz showed how smart of a boxer he can be.
Cotto will have an advantage on paper fighting at 154 pounds. Mayweather has only fought above 147 once, and struggled somewhat to defeat an aged Oscar De La Hoya in 2007. Floyd weighed 150 for that fight, which is said to be right about his everyday weight.
While Manny's 33 and probably showing some signs of age, Mayweather's going to turn 35 this month and definitely doesn't move the way he used to. His legs aren't what they once were. All great fighters get old, often very suddenly.
Mayweather's got a lot of other things on his mind. He'll be reporting for jail on June 1. Will that be a distraction for him? He's human, not an emotionless boxing machine.
Miguel Cotto is a proud fighter, a real champion no matter how bogus any title belts may or may not be. He's going to come to win.

I voted for Pacquiao-Bradley. When I turned the corner on wanting to see that one a few weeks ago, I turned hard. I really love this fight.
I also do like Mayweather-Cotto. It’s just not as good, IMO, but it does have more star power (STAR POWER!) and I expect it to sell more PPVs by a healthy margin.
I’m with you. As you’ll recall, I did the whole foot-stomping, “NOT GONNA BUY IT” routine when I thought it was going to be Cotto-Manny II (which, BTW, I actually think I would have stuck with). But I’m really, really happy with Pacquiao-Bradley.
of course, I’m a fairly hardcore boxing fan (especially now that the NFL has concluded; my posts here triple in the football offseason). I suspect the “average fan” is going to ask who the hell Tim Bradley is.
Bradley, I think, is more of a threat to Manny than Cotto is to Mayweather. Cotto is very good, but I just don’t see how anything he does well is going to give Mayweather any fits. On the other hand, Bradley can be a real bastard for Manny. Bradley is his toughest opponent in years, I think (pending how well he moves up to 147).
I wanted Bradley for Manny rather than the Clottey fight
and have pretty much wanted it ever since. However, I greatly underestimated the quality of the third Marquez fight and should have known better given how long JMM, without interruption, has been in the top 10 P4P, with the loss to Mayweather the only blemish. I’m still quite up for Manny-Bradley, but it will take some doing to elevate it above Pacquiao-Marquez III.
I went for Pacquiao-Bradley. I think it’s a more serious fight, with more intrigue and interest.
What’s interesting to me is the opportunity to watch Mayweather against Cotto after Paquiao convincingly beat him: not just if Mayweather will do the same, but also how.
And, who knows? Maybe the horse will learn to sing?
Floyd couldn’t or didn’t knock out marquez, a shane mosley who turned old after round 2, or zab judah for that matter, I wonder why pple think he’ll suddenly knock out Cotto who is a bigger, stronger fighter… and Cotto took a lickin’ from round 1 to round 12, and could have finished on his feet agst Pacquiao if Bayless had not stepped in. I don’t see May finishing him, maybe stunning, maybe decision, maybe potshotting, but KO? I don’t think so!
wow. gotta say i’m surprised at the results so far after 72 votes (58 MC/41PB…what’s up with the rounding, BLH?). I figured that since most would see Bradley as the clearly livelier underdog, that this would resonate with the boxing-types. Curious to see where the tally ends up.
I voted Pac v Bradley, for no real reason other than Tim’s an unbeaten fighter, whereas Cotto’s been beaten badly twice. I just feel Bradley will be up for this fight too, but I can’t see it being a ko for him, if he were to beat Manny, it’s points.
I’m surprised the vote is this close really. The combination of Pac’s perceived decline, Bradley’s skill, and Bradley’s perceived head tactics would make this fight the obvious choice. Cotto was never in May’s class (although at one time I thought otherwise) but with no body attack he’s even less so.
There’s no doubt Pacquiao-Bradley is the more competitive fight. Voting for Mayweather-Cotto is just voting for the bigger event (nothing wrong with that I guess).
This is a fight that TR didn’t want, which is more intriguing for me. Cotto-Pacquiao II was another safe/safer fight for Manny at his weight, which would be ideally what TR wanted. This fight has a lot of questions and if Manny wins convincingly (sans judge favoritism), boxing fans will give back the respect that the Manny camp has been asking for.
Floyd-Cotto is a good fight too, but there was a reason why TR and Floyd where both going after Cotto, he is still very beatable. Giving his last fight, Manny or Floyd won’t stand in front of Miguel and allow him to popshot them all night like Margarito did. So i feel Miguel and his new trainer will have to come up with a new game plan to at least make Floyd struggle somehow come May. And Floyd’s jail sentence won’t be a problem, hence his father issues have always come before big fights, and he still finds ways to win. Just my take.
I think TR wanted it, just not so soon… there was a reason they brought in Bradley last summer, but I guess they were going to market him and build him up until Pacquiao was on the decline and have him slay Pacquiao and make a new star… but the plot thickens!
I think they’d have preferred to lay off on Bradley until November at the least, spring 2013 more likely. But to their credit this is the fight they have and it’s the fight they’ve made.
Yeah, I was wonder who they were grooming to take Manny’s mantle… A Bradley win will definitely cement that. If Bradley is capable of pulling off the upset, that is.
Both wanted Cotto ....for one reason and one reason only
MONEY.
Nobody believed it was the better opponent.
TR is in the Boxing business. Every time everyone says they are in the Pacquaio business, look behind and in front. They have been in the Ali business, Leonard, Hagler, Oscar, Floyd and Manny business but as they tell me and I happen to acknowledge:
…Mayweather-Cotto because I think Bradley’s being wildly overvalued at that weight and against this opponent — he’s never been in with anybody close to Manny in talent, sliding or not. It will be good to see Manny win in an acton fight, though. I also think Cotto will be far more competitive with Floyd than folks expect. There’s a reason Money’s avoided him for years (until he lost a couple) and it wasn’t just promoters. Bottom line, I’m overjoyed we’re getting both of these bouts. Cross your fingers for Marquez-Peterson now, and the first half of 2012 will be great!
I am still intrigued how Mayweather will deal with a flush left hook from Cotto. I could see him shelling up a little with the right hand, dipping from the waist, twisting, and smiling…
…Miguel catching him flush with the second half of a sneaky double hook to the body and head — and this will be from a guy Floyd’s size, not a diminished Marquez. Then let’s see how he takes it. He’d better hope it’s better than the Mosley right…
It’s however you choose to take it. IMO “better fight” can’t be boiled down to just one thing. If you think it’s the better fight, it’s the one you’re more interested in seeing, but then I also don’t differentiate so much between “great movie” and “movie I liked a lot.” If a movie was so great, then I’d have liked it more, I reckon.
…at least going in. If I see a fight as an even match and then someone scores a dominating KO, I’m thrilled much more than if I saw it as a mismatch to begin with.
But I think being in the ring with a fighter like Pacquiao is really going to up his game, and it’s going to make for some fireworks. If Tim comes in with his head (lol, if, look at me) and opens up a cut on Manny’s face, I can see Manny going nuts and shit getting real very quickly.
Even though I’m going to be the only guy in the room cheering for Tim, I cannot freaking wait for this fight. (Pretty excited overall for Mayweather/Cotto as well)
B/c Pac is such a good counter puncher! Clottey was just a stationary shell. Timothy Bradley ain’t that! The only thunder clap you’ll hear is Pac’s head bouncing off the turnbuckle! Oooo!!! :)
Bradley’s will to win is tremendous. His aggresiveness/desire alone will guarantee this fight to be exciting. Like everyone is saying, Manny hasn’t faced anyone like him in recent years. All Bradley wants to do is win. He doesn’t care who he is facing.
Bradley’s received lots of criticism for not being interesting. I think part of it is he doesn’t have a big personality to go with a sort of 50-50 record of his fights being entertaining.
That was Timmy Bradley. The Tim Bradley that you will see on 24/7 is bound to electrify.
I can see it now. Tim tking his kids to school and sppeding to get there. Running across desert highways to get to the parent/teacher conference on time. Leaving his bible at home before before church.
This is Terrible Timothy Bradley we are talking about here.
Because I like watching fighters who know their business and these are two of the best in the biz.
I am also watching Cotto to take his measure; the same as I have been since the summer of 2008. I do not expect him to be faster or stronger than the guy who beat SSM and has fought since but i still expect the highest levels of professionalism.
As for Floyd, I expect dominance because, since Oscar, he chooses carefully to ensure it. I will however be looking to see just how dominant and how strong he can be at this age/weight/point in his career.
He has his work cut out for him. These two names will certainly do better at then gate that Pac/Bradley but I wuld hope/think that Floyd should want to better Pacquaio’s performance in beating Cotto, thus making for an exciting night.
like scott said, bradley isn’t afraid to make a fight ugly, he is a very awkward fighter, i think that fight will be dissapointed, he is faster than manny, i doubt that pacquiao can find him clearly, the cotto – floyd fight, it’s very interesting cotto fighting in his weight, floyd doesn’t have a power punch, and he doesn’t put pressure on his fight so cotto can easily do his job, but i don’t know if cotto could figure out mayweather’s defense….
I’ve only seen Bradley in Bradley-Alexander, so I voted for pac-bradley just because I don’t really know Bradley that well. I know the other three fighters really well for a reasonably new boxing fan, so to me Bradley is the only unknown factor here.
i voted for mayweather-cotto, its the one i’m most looking forward to. i’m in the minority who wasnt that impressed by mayweather-ortiz and i’m a big fan of seeing cotto fight anybody, loved cotto-pac man and margo, and though i think pac-bradley may be more competitive i’m looking forward to both but mayweather-cotto edges it

Bradley wouldn't fight the real best 140 lbs fighter in the world
He wanted to cash in with this fight instead. He won’t come to win, he will come to get paid.
