Who is going to be on the Floyd Mayweather vs. Miguel Cotto undercard?Options include James Kirkland and Jorge Linares. (Photo by Scott Heavey/Getty Images)
Before I start, let me just put out this disclaimer. Most of this article is pure speculation based on promotional companies and likely matchups for the fight on May 5th. In order to narrow down potential undercard opponents, I first thought of who are the big stars for Golden Boy and Mayweather Productions and if they will be ready to fight on May 5th.
The biggest fight is one that has already been heavily rumored, Shane Mosley against Saul Alvarez. Like most boxing fans, I hate absolutely everything about this fight. Mosley is completely shot. He is unable to get off his punches with any regularity and his movement is not even close to what it used to be. Mosley had trouble with Sergio Mora and he looked terrible against Manny Pacquiao. On the other hand, Canelo is a powerful young junior middleweight whom is already a gigantic star in his native Mexico. He has serious power, which makes me nervous because Mosley already shows some signs of brain damage. This fight is terrible and it scares me, moving on.
Usually, Mayweather PPV fights have fighters from the Mayweather stable, which includes both Jesse Vargas and Deandre Latimore. I fully expect both of these fighters to be on PPV undercard, although Jesse Vargas might not be televised. Latimore could take on Cornelius Bundrage, who was recently begging for a fight against Victor Ortiz. This fight would be for the IBF light middleweight title with the winner potentially taking on Cañelo for his next fight. It's a decent matchup so why not.

Jorge Linares might get a light touch on the undercard because he is a very good fighter who makes for great TV. However, he is deeply flawed and that usually makes him exciting. Yet, I do not expect Golden Boy to put a powerful fighter, or a fighter with any power, in front of Linares. If James Kirkland can get passed Carlos Molina rather easily (no easy task), he could also be on the undercard as well.
Golden Boy fighters that would be logical inclusions but will not be on the card include Victor Ortiz, Robert Guerrero, and Abner Mares. The first two fighters are too expensive if Canelo and Mosley are on the card and Mares will probably be fighting in April against Vusi Malinga. Amir Khan will also be too expensive and Marcos Maidana will likely still be recovering from his battle with Devon Alexander.
Since this is a brainstorming article, are they any possible matchups that you guys can think of? We should come up with a list of decent scraps and then send it to Oscar via twitter or just argue about it.

I keep doing that with pinot noire, in a language where it does not exist.

Can Canelo just officially change his first name from Saul to Canelo, like Marvin Hagler did when he added the Marvelous? Would really make it easier on all of us.

I'd rather let him keep his name
Need to fill an undercard with a well known fighter?

crossing my fingers for linares

my suggestions
Have kirkland take on canelo while shane is on stand by. If kirkland can get past his next fight with carlos (Kirkland will win) than shane steps up.

lucas mathysse vs victor ortiz

It’d be good to see Mathysse on a big undercard, since he was supposed to be on the last Floyd card but then had to pull out. Think he’s got to power to stop a chinny Ortiz as well.

Sorry but what signs of brain damage does Mosley have?

slurring in his speech
ColtJouvet - February 7, 2012
whiny nasal, whispery quality to voice, slightley slurred speech, very slow on the uptake compared with old interviews, where he was really with it, didn’t repeat himself or fall back on filler phrases all the time.
