For the time being, the WBC appears to be standing firm on their order that Julio Cesar Chavez Jr must face Sergio Martinez in his next fight or be stripped of their middleweight belt, as Miguel Rivera and Ernesto Castellanos report that a potential fight between Chavez and Antonio Margarito -- which Bob Arum would like to make -- would likely be rejected by the sanctioning body.

The No. 1 reason for rejecting the fight would be that Martinez has been sidelined too many times for the benefit of Chavez, and that eventually, the WBC does have to stick to something to not make it look like Chavez is the green belt body's baby boy. With Martinez set to face Matthew Macklin on March 17, the WBC will be waiting for that result before any official decision. If Sergio loses, then he would lose his mandatory status, and that's how it would work with any organization.

Star-divide

Margarito is another story entirely, and may not be approved as a title challenger even if Martinez were upset by Macklin

Margarito has other hurdles to overcome. The World Boxing Council will order Margarito to undergo a thorough eye examination before three ophthalmologists who are recognized and appointed by the WBC's medical committee.

Margarito (38-8, 27 KO) is 33 years old, has never fought at 160 pounds, and is coming off of two very lopsided losses to Manny Pacquiao and Miguel Cotto, in which his eye was first destroyed, and then re-demolished the next time out following surgery and a lot of doubt and skepticism.

Margarito, to put it nicely, has no business fighting for the WBC middleweight title, or any middleweight title, or any title period. It's pretty easy to see he's no middleweight, as size-wise he looks very average at junior middleweight, and his punching power just doesn't appear to be there anymore.

Andy Lee is also being considered for Chavez's next fight, with Top Rank and Arum seemingly giving no thought to the fact that the WBC just might be serious about Chavez needing to fight Martinez next or be stripped. It could be possible that a deal would be worked out between all the parties involving a Lee fight before Martinez, since Lou DiBella promotes both Lee and Martinez. If Lee were to beat Chavez, it's not like he'd have any trouble setting up Martinez vs Lee after that if he wanted to go that way. It's a fight he's considered doing before.

WBC didn'

According to this article and this video, the WBC didn’t act wrong concerning the drug test issue.

It seems that the WBC didn't act wrongly

I wonder why they're trying so hard to preserve this guy

Don’t they understand that the more he builds his record up with tomato cans, the more people do not take his undefeated record seriously.

Bob Arum would just love to throw another Cab Driver in their with Chavez
Rubio drive cabs?
Uh Oh--here we go again

Cab

Drivers are tough: Go to Camden, Zfan, and threaten one on an empty road at night

Better still, take on BoxAnne! Margo ain’t no cab driver, more like a cab without an axle: Say no to Chavez/Margo!!

WBC mandatory

The WBC is going to make Chavez face Martinez just like they force all title fight to have post-fight drug testing. And enforce all mandatories unless they don’t. Yup they haven’t done this to Martinez and Chavez before…

I wonder how much Arum is paying Sulomain to keep Chavez Jr ass-whooping free?

3% of every JCC jr fight….

The WBC should be judged on what they do and not what they say.

As for Chavez, he has plenty of options because he makes everybody money. The networks. The sites. The commissions. The promoters . The managers. Even the opponents. Everyone.

As long as his name is Chavez, he has options that no other fighter has. Credibility is another story.

It’s mentioned briefly in the article, but what does everyone think about Macklin’s chances against Martinez?

Obviously if this were to happen it solves a load of problems for JCC Jr and the WBC.

I personally wouldn’t be too shocked – Martinez didn’t impress me in getting the job done against Barker, and Macklin is legit top 10 and is coming off a confidence boosting performance against Sturm (although he lost, I get the impression in interviews that he’s using the feeling of being robbed as motivation).

I don’t think he has much of a chance. I understand Martinez wasn’t sensational against Barker, but I don’t understand all the criticism. He fought a solid, undefeated fighter, and took him out late with a high volume of punches.

Macklin, in my opinion, doesn’t have the skill set to compete with Martinez. On another note, if any of you haven’t seen his fight against Jamie Moore back in 2006, you should, one of the best fights I’ve ever seen.

Another thing which I forgot to mention, don’t forget how sensational Martinez was against Dzinziruk just 7 months before the Barker fight.

You guys often fight to the level of their competition

That said, I am hoping Macklin gives Sergio a good night’s work and we get a great show

Meant to say Top guys often fight....

I’m a big fan of Martinez, and agree he looked great against Dzinziruk. But he is 36 (or is it 37?) so wondering if his lacklustre display against Barker was fighting down to the competition (as Pakinpower says) or whether it was the first signs of slowing down with age. If it’s the latter then Macklin could give him a rough night.

Let's hope for a good scrap

If either man underestimates the other, its a mistake
