Is a fight for the WBC middleweight title in Sergio Martinez's future? Only Bob Arum knows. (Photo by Al Bello/Getty Images)
The WBC is making Sergio Martinez the mandatory for Julio Cesar Chavez Jr's WBC middleweight title. The huge grain of salt that needs to be taken with this story is the fact that the WBC has done this before.
At their convention at the end of December, they agreed to make Sergio Martinez the mandatory challenger for Julio Cesar Chavez Jr, but then they backed out of it in a bad way. Usually, the challenger is given some kind of walk-away money so that the titleholder can take on another fighter.

In this case, the WBC just stripped Martinez of his mandatory status and sanctioned the fight between Chavez and Marco Antonio Rubio. Sergio was not notified of this decision and he did not have a say in the decision. Arum said jump and the WBC asked how high.
Now the WBC has again made Sergio the mandatory and again Arum is angling for Julio Cesar Chavez Jr to take an easier fight than Sergio. The big question now is how the WBC is going to handle the situation once Arum announces Junior's next opponent.
Will they simply go along with the decision like they did in the past, or will they finally stand up to Arum and properly enforce the mandatory? Seeing how the incredibly shady events in Texas went down, I can't help but feel that the WBC is in Arum's pocket and they will fold quicker than a house of cards once an opponent is chosen.
I just hope Martinez has the stones to completely eviscerate the WBC for their lack of a spine, like he did last time. What do you guys think? Does the WBC lack the conviction to enforce their own mandatory challenger?

I think it’s the WBC …. and why anybody gives a shit what they do or say is beyond me.
I can’t recall a more corropt entity and/or organization in any sport.

That’s a bit of an overstatement. Other subjective sports have organizations that make the WBC looks like saints. Remember that ridiculous ice dancing scoring controversy a couple of olympics ago…

Does it happen every other month or so with other organizations in other sports? It’s no overstatement at all. Boxing is as crooked as it gets.

I mean the mob isn’t actively involved in this one. Well they might be but that isn’t confirmed yet.

Honestly I forgot that one
But the WBC is something altogether different. They are a laugh (or cry) a second.

This begs for a proper fanpost that I'm too lazy/busy to write.....
can we rank the sanctioning bodies by perceived credibility? It seems that all are a joke in their own way but the WBC gets ripped the most because the green belts still seem to matter to a lot of folks. Not sure why, really. What say you guys? If I have time I’ll ask the question with a poll sometime soon. Just curious really what you all think.

Good question Pops.
I imagine th WBC and its Kim Jong-il-like cult of personality leadership gets the most attention because in some respects (others can elaborate) they do matter…..and they make such damn fools of themselvs so unabashedly.

1. IBF (they tread the lightest thanks to past problems)
2. WBO (they probably do the least stupid things of the other three)
3. WBA (they do a lot of stupid things and love award belts to up to four guys per division, but…)
4. WBC (they contradict themselves repeatedly and Don Jose’s drama queen act when questioned has been old for 25 years)

Does the IBF have the computerized rankings? Which agency runs that one?
Waldo Rastel - February 10, 2012
IBO
